Audi A4 (2010 and older) Luxury

DESCRIPTION

The Audi A4 has a planted, sportier stance and holds the road with a new sense of confidence and enthusiasm. Its new underpinnings are shared with the S5 and A5 coupes. Thanks to the liberal use of ultra-high-strength steel, the body weighs 10 percent less than last year's, yet is more rigid.

The 2.0 T is equipped with a new 2.0-liter, I4, 211-horsepower, turbo engine that achieves 21-mpg in the city and 27-mpg on the highway for a combined fuel economy of 23-mpg. A 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard. The 3.2 quattro with Tiptronic is equipped with a new 3.2-liter, V6, 265-horsepower engine that achieves 17-mpg in the city and 26-mpg on the highway for a combined fuel economy of 20-mpg. A 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard.

Weakness:

yet to be diagnosed rattle coming from moonroof screen headliner.

Taken two road trips and want to take more...soon!!! Trip through Phoenix to Flagstaff was awesome. Great driving car on twisty, rolling roads that begs you to move faster. Once above 75-80 mph the car really hits stride and sucks to the pavement like it's got downforce. Difference between cars engineered to drive at autobahn speeds and those in Japan or Detroit. Next trip...limiter here we come! Very neutral around town and great gas mileage as well. Averaged 30 mpg from Phoenix to LA.

Strength:

AWD is one of the main reasons to get an Audi. With the OEM sports package, fantastic cornering. Lot's of possibilities for aftermarket upgrades. Safe and secure. Increasing resale value.

Weakness:

Definitely not cheap. Parts are expensive and are not readily available- only 4 wharehouses in the US, and many parts need to be shipped from Germany. Anti-theft system is inadequate for a car in this price range.

Adequate power in the 1.8 170hp model, with plenty of options for aftermarket performance upgrades if so desired. Lots of pep at highway speeds, and fantastic cornering.

Kinda pricey, but still a relative bargain when compared to others in it's category.

Model Reviewed: A4 1.8

Strength:

Seems solidly put together. Quattro system grips well. The 17 inch alloy wheels are beauties and worth the cost.

Weakness:

The 1.8 liter engine is unimpressive and a disapointment. It kicks in late and quits early. My model year has an added 20 horsepower over prior models, but doesn't feel like it. What annoyingly weak accelleration must owners of the older models suffer! The car starts off as sedate as a hearse at funeral speed, then kicks in some power at 3000 rpm, but it quits adding power at 4500 rpm and just adds more annoying whiny noise thereafter. When I see company after company offering engine control chips to add power to 1.8 liter engines, I figure there must be a large population of Audi A4 owners who feel something similar to what I describe. I am saddened that I paid a fairly high price for a small German sport sedan, but will have to pay even more to make it behave like a German sport sedan. I will probably lose the warranty by changing the chip too. Why can't Audi just put a decent powerplant in to begin with. The 1.8 is basically a Volkswagen economy car engine with a turbocharger on it. Wind noise is pretty substantial for such an aerodynamic looking car. There is no place to store CDs. The interior is comfortable, but plain. Others I test drove had interiors about as lovely as the inside of a municipal fleet vehicle.

A decent car badly in need of a heart transplant.

I FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. HAD 5000 MILES ON IT NOW HAS 27000 AND STILL RUNS GREAT NO MAJOR PROBLEMS OTHER THAN NEW TIRES AND LOUSY REMOTE. MAINTAINCE PROGRAM IS GREAT. A LITTLE NOISY ON BUMPY ROADS. IN SUMMER THE AIR IS NOISY BUT COOLS GREAT. SUCKS GAS LIKE A WEED AND IS EXPENSIVE TO INSURE RATED AS A SYMBOL 18 VERY HIGH!FACTORY TIRES ARE USELESS I SUGGEST NEW ONES A MUST IF YOU LIVE IN AN AREA WITH SNOW.I AM ONLY CONSIDERING A NEW CAR ONLY BECAUSE OF THE INSURANCE RATES AND BACK LEG ROOM.

Great looks, great handling (quattro), great interior styling.

Weakness:

2.8 V6 is on the weak side. Notorious electrical problems. Small back seat (too small for a baby seat!). Audi service sucks.

Always wanted to own a supposedly fine German Luxury Automobile. After comparing the BMW's, Audi's, VW'sm etc..., I finally decided on the Audi. After owning it 8 months, I must say I was merely "satisfied" with the car. All the good points were marred by the bad. Poor reliability, poor dealer service, etc...

Model Reviewed: A4 1.8T Quattro

Strength:

This car is incredibly fun to drive; the engine as well as the steering are responsive and supple. loaded with standard features as well as reasonably priced options. AWD quattro system is an absolute must have, dont bother buying an audi without it. it gives you an amazing sense of confidence at securtity while driving in poor weather. I drove it throught the recent noreaster and never once lost traction. trip computer is very helpful, if only a little confusing to use. dash instuments light up a luminecent red, and are clear and helpful. sound system is great, of course if you have the bose its even better. i suppose rear space could be an issue, so i suggest that you dont buy this if youre looking for a family sedan, but its big enough for a family of 2-3. Sunroof is excellent, and the autodimming mirrors are a must have. heated seats work well, havent tried the ski rack yet, but im sure thats fine. the trunk is quite spacious as well. The tiptronic system is great, especially in manual. overall build quality is excellent.

Weakness:

they should at least offer leather and power seats in the 1.8T, that exclusion was quite vexing.
rear room i suppose
cupholder is a little odd, but it works well
on of the warning lights keeps popping up even though nothing is wrong, very irritating

So far my driving experience has been excellent. Being sixteen and this being my first car, the whole thing is surreal and wonderful. I truly enjoy driving and i would reccomend this car to all those who do also. Best car in its class that you can buy for the money payed.

Strength:

Will be taking delivery in the next 3 months or so of a new A4 1.8T. My wife really likes this car, although she does wish for power seats on the turbo car. Have test driven both versions extensively (+3 times) and come away very impressed each time. The ability to add performance upgrades is something that will make the car more interesting as well. The engine can handle more than 170HP as the TT gets 225HP and 206lbft out of it without a complaint. Like the understated interior of the 1.8 versus the wood in the 2.8. This car sticks like glue to the road and the AWD really inspires confidence in all weather conditions and cornering. Will have to get used to the throttle and cluth interaction, but that will be the fun of ownership.

Weakness:

It requires premium fuel.
I drive a Chevy Cavalier and have had 2 Honda Accords and they don't hold a candle to this vehicle. My Delco radio stinks here in Kenosha due to power plant interference but did not have that problem with the Honda's. Hopefully there will be no radio issues but I'll be listening to the engine and some CD's so I think I'll manage.
To the other reviewers who have had dealer issues and warranty problems I'm sorry to hear that. All I can say is complain, complain, complain. Change dealers, contact Audi of America, tell the dealer that you'll use the lemon law if the car has to go back for the same problem too many times. If you are ambitious write letters to the owner of the dealer and the President of AOA. Inform these people that they have lost your business, tell them copies of the letter will be sent to executive management. The response or lack of may surprise you and determine your next course of action. Don't give up, at least try to make your complaint known. And if it leaves a bad taste in your mouth part ways with the car and don't buy the product again. Unfortunately those are the only ways to get the message across.

What sold us on the car is the fun to drive factor, value for the dollar and the warranty/maintenance plan.
I wish we could afford an S4 or an A6 with the 2.7T/4.2 but we can't. A6 has nice interior room that lets you relax a little more.
BMW is too expensive. $250 extra for in dash CD, come on give us a break will you.
Lexus IS no manual and no other AWD cars in our price range.
Will update review after delivery and some mileage is put on car.
Review is based on impressions up to this point.

My wife and I have driven the VW Passat V6 with 4motion (no manual available) and the Front wheel drive version of that car. Very disappointed in the 4motion. The front drive with stick is a fun car, hard to believe they have the same engines. Have driven both versions of the A4 1.8T and 2.8 V6.
Considered a Subaru WRX but no free maintenance plan and no WRX's to test drive for 6 months!? I can upgrade the A4 performance to WRX numbers without anyone knowing what is under the hood and have the refinement of a Euro car without the cash outlay of a BMW. I think the performance aspect of the car will be good but we wanted a little luxury with our first performance sedan.
Excellent entry level sedan for couples with 1 child and maybe a dog. If more children are planned then larger model or the Avant would be a good alternative.

Strength:

Weakness:

1.8 series has a design flaw in its exhaust system, weak engine, NOT A CAR TO OWN WITHOUT A WARRANTY.

I had my exhaust system replaced under warranty 4 times now in the past 3 years, because of a design flaw in the first box. After 105 000km's the falves, crankshaft pully and gasget had to be replaced. Luckly it was still under warranty.
The Concert radio's volume knob broke the other day, and I they quoted me $155 to repair it. After my own investigation I found out that the part's cost only $7. Conveniently for them, the radio is not included in the warranty. The AUDI warranty is not worth the paper it is written on. You will find that almost nothing is covered, except the machine. And believe me, the parts that are not covered do break and they are expensive as hell.

Absolutely the worst radio when in a central business district. FM reception which normally works everywhere is basically non-existent when near high rise buildings. Audi has not been able to solve the problem.

Would not purchase another Audi do to the radio reception problems which annoy me to no end. It's a shame this has to mar all of the good qualities of this car but it does detract greatly from my pleasure of usage.

Strength:

Good looks, sport looking. I really liked the look and feel of this car when I first saw it.

Weakness:

After 6 months, the transmission started feeling klunkier than usual until it began to surge and bang. It got so bad that it felt like someone hit me from behind. The dealer told me that there were complaints from the A6 and A8 about this as well. He called it a "Characteristic" of the car, I think this is what most people are feeling with the sluggishness at lower speeds, it would sometimes lunge forward but only after the big thump. They kept my car for 2 months after which they replaced the transmission, 2 weeks later it started doing it again. I now have the car in for alternator, brakes, slow starts, sticking buttons on the fan switch and the transmission problem again.

I would strongly suggest you drive this car at slow speeds between 20-30 and see how it down shifts and up shifts between the lower gears, if you hear a clanking sound or it feels unusually rough this could be a sign of bigger problems. Don't just do it once do it a number of times, take you foot of the gas, then moderately step on it and release, repeat this if it's shifting smoothly you don't have a problem.
