Strength:

good build quality

Weakness:

The dealership we bought from is part of a large chain. If service is no better in your area it would be reason enough to avoid the brand. I would characterize our dealer as predatory. They try to sell unneccessary service to women by phone after the car has been dropped off and charge $85 for their estimate if the customer does not agree. We were blindsided by the service department issue since we had been so pleased with the sales department.Hopefully our experience is not typical of all Acura dealership's service.

The overall quality of the car is high but the seatbacks have a horizontal seam that I find less than comfortable. At 6' I feel slightly too tall for the cabin. My head seems to brush the sunroof at all times. The car is quick but doesn't have the athletic confidence of any of the BMW's in its class. So save the money (upfront and on $85 per hour service) and buy a Honda or spend it and get a BMW.

Strength:

Solid build, reputation and resale value. Roomy interior with luxury appointments. Exterior styling remains up-to-date. Very close to Lexus 400 auto in style and features.

Weakness:

Some controls lack look of luxury if that is important to some drivers. Wind noise and in-trunk CD player are annoyances. Newer models have in-dash CD player.

Purchased new in 2000. Previously owned 1996 TL. Excellent vehicle. Ride and feel on distance trips and in town driving are exceptional. Car is four years old with 26,500 miles and still looks new. Have found that the car drives well with mid-grade and with regular gasoline. This is a low maintaince auto. Not expensive to maintain.

Strength:

The exquisite camphorwood trim designed by Tendo, whose work is displayed in the New York Museum Of Modern Art. The sound system is comparable to a $10,000 Quad (Acoustical Manufacturing) Electrostatic home system. This car does not offend and provoke less fortunate people (as the BMW's and Mercedes do). The timeless, classic styling. No discernable difference between 87 and 92 octane performance. The silky, smooth, quiet, fluid, drive train. 0 defects at delivery and 30 day usage point. The most solid feeling exterior door handles. Made in Sayama Japan, (one of the top 3 auto manufacturing facilities in the world) etc. etc. etc. ad infinitum.

Weakness:

Dash mounted cd changer (now done for 2004) Upgrade the steering wheel audio and cruise control switches. The present ones are from the Plebian Honda parts bin. The ignition switch has at least 40 degrees of unnecessary travel. iVTEC for improved fuel efficiency. (now at 12.8L/100km city but improving steadily as break-in progresses).

We've only had our new 2003 for a month now but it's been sublime! This car was not built nor manufactured it was DESIGNED and ENGINEERED! Upon reading the manual I learned there was a little hidden drawer for coins and sundry objects on the left side of the cockpit (yes it feels like a Lear jet). When I found this little box and activated it I was surprised that it slid out perfectly on some kind of spring actuated hydraulic feeling mechanism! I was once more stunned when I brushed my finger on the bottom of the little drawer! They had gone to the trouble of lining it with velvet velour! From this minor accessory example you can easily extrapolate what care and thought went into the primary and secondary systems of this Automotive Masterpiece!

Strength:

Looks, smooth ride.

Weakness:

Road noise seems a little more than I would like.

Bought the car in 2002 with 60k miles on it. Looks and runs like new. It now has 84k miles on it, had to replace an oxygen sensor, check engine light came on to tell me this. Had to have the front rotors resurfaced, I warped them some how. Probably breaking hard at 80 mph, which in my opinion shouldn't hurt a car that costs over 40k new. Other than that, I have changed the oil and put gas in it. People get in it and think it is a new car, I laugh and tell them it has 84k miles on it. They look at me kindof funny.

Strength:

Asthetically perfect inside and out - heated seats (very warm) - good price - smooth ride - plenty power - ...it's a Honda...what more can I say?

Weakness:

Awkward ignition: key needs to be turned further than wrist can do in one motion. Not as good gas mileage as I had hoped for. Mine didn't come with CD changer - $340.00 to install!

After a year of researching cars, I decided to purchase an Acura RL. I drive over 30k miles a year and I wanted a luxury vehicle which was reliable and asthetically handsome. I have only owned my Black on black RL for 1 week and so far, I think I'm happy with my choice. The price was great ($16,250 with 50k Miles) considering all the features, especially compared to the Lexus 400 and the 5 series BMW. The exterior, in my opinion, is much more refined and better looking than either of the fore-mentioned and the interior is just beautiful! I plan on owning this vehicle for many years to come and I'm hoping that it will be as reliable as a honda-made car should be. The car is wonderful to drive, smooth and sharp. I test drove the Lexus GS300 and the Q45 - this was more comparable to the Q45 although the engine is smaller...who needs a V8 anyway?

Strength:

Everything about this car is well engineered. It's also a great looker.

Weakness:

Poor resale value. I needed to sell this car for personal reasons. I paid $40K cash for this vehicle. 12 months later, Ron Tonkin Acura would give me only $20K trade in on this vehicle. The local Jeep dealer offerend me $23K. I paid $40,000 twelve months earlier!!! Had I know the RL had such poor resale I would never have purchased it. Beware buyers looking for good resale value, you won't find it. Guess I will keep the RL... I really love this car.

I love this car. It's nicer than a Lexus and has a much better price point. The interior is flawless and there is plenty of power. A V8 would ruin the ride of this car... adding too much weight and cost. It's fine as is.

Strength:

Value, quietness and the Acura trademark of everything standard except the navigation system - no haggling for different option packages and reduces waiting time in periods of high demand.

Weakness:

Needs more power, preferably a V8. Larger front rotors would be a help as well as cooling ducts to reduce warping. I have experienced extreme tightness with the steering while parallel parking. Dealership has said it may be the speed sensitive sensor or a bad rack. Some features I would like to see in this car are rear sunshade, rear heated seats, more rear legroom, full size spare and one touch up/down feature on all windows.

All around good car for the money. However, some standard or optional features are needed if this car is to compete with Lexus, MBenz, and BMW. I would consider purchasing another RL at the end of my lease term if Acura steps up and delivers an RL with at least 275hp, more features (listed below) and a larger cabin.
