Strength:
Handling, comfort, ride, reliability, looks.
Weakness:
None. We spent two week in England with the trunk in a Lotus Elise. You just have to know how to pack. Oh yeah, I bought some soft fitted luggage when we had the first Miata and it is nice. This is the third red Miata we have owned. The first was a 1990 first year. It was awsome, but this car is quieter at speed due to the six speed transmision and the wind delecter behind the seats. It is much better in the mountains due to the gear ratios and the low profile tires. The additional skirts and the beautiful wheel give it a totally different look. I had wanted a Lotus Elise and had actually gone to England to drive one but constant delays led to the purchase of this new Miata and I will probably not buy the Lotus now. The new Miata is that much better than the first one. I would like to install a super charger and an intercooler someday. The seats are very nice as well as the Narni steering wheel. The car is a real sweet handling car and runs real nice between 70 and 85 MPH. The stereo has a nice feature of auto volume adjust so you dont have to constantly adjust it when you come to stop lights and at speeds over 70. It's the best sports car for the monewy bar none! Strength:
It fits you like a shoe. Great handeling and performance. You can buy a bigger car for the money but you'll not match the quality.
Weakness:
It is a small car and it will never be any larger than the day you buy it. Barely more than a motorcycle with doors. You may not want it as a primary vehicle. A great mid-life crisis car. Fun to drive, solid performance and easy on the eyes. Similar Products Used: MGB's |

Strength:
If u drive one u know. If you havnt, its the second next thing to a go kart on bigger wheels. Gets good gas mileage, nimble, reliabe, decent crash test ratings, etc
Weakness:
Not the most practical thing out there, but is that why u bought it? THe car fits its purpose in what is was intended to do. Be affordable, FUN, reliable, good looking *inside and out*, and u got the rest. One thing I do have to say, which is a huge pet peeve of mine is the marque and image issue. If you lack that much self confidence, or need attention as a material grabbing person, I feel sorry for you. I have a newer BMW, even though I didnt buy it, I dont feel a marque makes me as a person or any more special. Its annoying to hear those comments of 'look at me' attitude. Just drive and enjoy. Strength:
Handling. Shifter action. Exhaust note. Convertible top's ease of use. Reliability. Overall balance.
Weakness:
Way over priced Minidisc option. I've driven a couple of Miatas over the past ten years, or so, and have always wanted to own one. For one reason or another, I could never bring myself to buy one. Well last week I couldn't come up with a good reason to wait any longer. I'm now the proud owner of a british racing green 2003 Miata. I know Mazda has a different name for the color, but I don't care. I feel like a twelve year old kid with an unlimited pass to the go kart track. I can't imagine enjoying the driving experience more. I've driven faster cars, Porsche 911's, 944 Turbos, Mustang GT's, Lexus GS400's, etc. All were great cars. The Miata, however, wins the day for pure joy of driving. The telepathic steering, the precise little shifter, the cornering stance, the cool little snarl of the exhaust note. Sure the Miata, like all cars, could use more power. But, if a larger engine was an option, I don't think I'd check the box. I prefer balance to sheer speed and acceleration. I'm not sure when they made them standard, but my Miata came with stock 16 inch wheels with what appears to be black rubber bands wrapped around them. Some folks might find the ride a little too unforgiving. I love what it does for cornering and overall handling. It feels as though I can place the car wherever I want to. They look great too. For those who enjoy driving and interfacing with well desinged and executed machinery, the Miata is a fairly inexpensive way to rediscover just how much fun even a quick drive to the grocery store can be. Strength:
Handling is top notch, little or no body roll in tight curves. Performance is great for a 4 cylinder.
Weakness:
None that I am aware of. I have owned 2 Miata's and will own a 3rd on of these days. People complaining about the cup holder apparently shows that there aren't many weaknesses. One of the best driving cars I have ever owned. I have owned an 97 and now a 01, both are great cars. |

Miata SE
Strength:
Exceptional handling, fun factor (with top down), great shifting 6 speed, precise steering, easy to put up/down rag top, solid hard top option (allows for year round driving), styling is still attractive after all these years, inexpensive compared to other roadsters.
Weakness:
Shallow trunk, lousy cupholder placement, limited leg room, 6th gear is only marginally higher than 5th, no traction control, no tilt steering wheel, fuel economy is barely average considering the car is small and reasonably light, one of the last cars you'd want to be in during a collision with an SUV. With the top down, few cars can match the fun factor offered by this cool little two seater. Bought for the wife, but I think I have more fun driving it. Handling is excellent with almost no body roll; steering is precise and the 6 speed shifts smoothly like a toggle switch. Performance is good but not exhilarating and fuel economy is somewhat disappointing considering the size of the car. The bottom line is, for the money, no other roadster (we don't get the MR2 Spyder in Canada) comes close in value and fun. Wife loves it, so I'm happy. MARK WINKLER
Strength:
GREAT HANDLING, COMFORTABLE SEATING (HOLDS BODY FIRM ON QUICK CORNERING), LOVE THE INTERIOR STYLING, (JUST LOOK AT SOME THE OTHER SPORT CARS LIKE THE MR2 AND YOU WILL KNOW WHAT I MEAN), AND I "LOVE" THE LOCATION OF THE CUP HOLDERS (THESE PEOPLE THAT COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS HAVEN'T COME UP WITH ANY IDEAS ON AN ALTERNATE LOCATION (MAYBE THEY WANT TO PUT THE DARN THINGS IN THE CAR TRUNK).
Weakness:
TRUNK SPACE MIGHT BE SMALL BUT IT WAS THE LARGEST IN THE GROUP OF CARS THAT I TEST DROVE. IF THE MIATA HAS ONE FLAW WELL HERE IT IS: "AFTER A YEAR OF DRIVING THIS CAR YOU WILL NOTICE THAT NO HEADS WILL TURN IN ADMIRATION". I NOW WISH THAT I BOUGHT THE BMW Z3 ESPECIALLY NOW THAT THEY CAME OUT WITH THE Z4. I COULD BE WORKING ON OWNING A CLASSIC INSTEAD OF MY MIATA. I NOW UNDERSTAND WHY OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE CASH BUY THE OTHER SPORTS CARS "IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE HANDLING AND EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THE IMAGE OF WHAT YOUR DRIVING". OH WELL I GUESS I WILL HAVE TO JUST ENJOY THE BEST RIDING CAR" I NEED TO SAY THAT I HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT SOME OF THE QUOTED PRICING ON THE REVIEWS OF THESE CARS AND I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE PRICES HAVE BEEN SO HIGH ON THE 2000, 01,02 AND 03 MIATA MODELS. THAT BEING SAID, I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THE MIATA WAS A SISSY CAR UNTIL MY DESIRE TO BUY A SPORTS CAR LED ME TO TEST DRIVE THE BMW Z3, MR2 AND THE HONDA S2000. MY PRICE RESTRICTIONS AND LIMITATIONS FORCED ME TO LOOK AT ALL USED CARS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE MR2 AND MIATA. AFTER DRIVING THE MIATA AND COMPARING IT WITH THE OTHERS I COULDN'T UNDERSTAND WHY I WOULD WANT TO PAY MORE FOR A USED CAR WHEN I COULD GET A BETTER DRIVE FROM A NEW MIATA. I LOVE THE WAY IT HANDLES BUT DOES HAVE A NEGATIVE THAT WOULD BOTHER SOME PEOPLE. IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO IMPRESS ANYONE YOUR NOT GOING TO DO IT WITH TOTAL STRANGERS WITH THESE CARS. THE ONLY REAL LOVERS OF THE MIATA ARE THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE DRIVEN ONE OR OWN ONE. THE ONLY TIME THE MIATA ATTRACTS ATTENTION IS WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING IN A GROUP. Strength:
Its handling, gas mileage, size for me because I'm petite so it fits me like a glove. Parking! I can find a parking space anywhere fast!
Weakness:
cup holders near the shifter, trunk space, but what do you expect from a sports car??? size, all other vehicles look gigantic next to it....but you do get used to it. I bought my new miata last year after my divorce. My new outlook on life was to be happy and enjoy what life has to offer. This car allows me to do just that. I can't help but to smile every time I get in it and let the top down. I love the responses I get from other drivers. It's hillarious! A little red convertible sports car and blonde hair blowing in the wind, what an attention-getter!! A true man-magnet. And it's like you're in a special click having this car with other miata owners. I make an effort to wave at every passing miata driver while on the road. |

Yeah it looks good and is fun to drive
Weakness:
Mazda doesn't back their product. A catalytic converter should not fail at 50,000 miles. Coils should not fail at 50,000 miles. Mazda sucks. It's probably because Ford owns them now. Crap. Crap. Crap. Less than 50,000 miles, catalytic converter failed, and caused an additional 2,000 bucks worth of engine problems. Now, this problem should have been covered under the warranty, BUT Mazda sucks bad too (and the dealer) and claimed that the problem was something else, refused to cover the warranty, and stuck us with a $2,500 bill. BOOOOOOOOO! DON'T BUY A MAZDA. MAZDA DOES NOT CARE ABOUT CUSTOMERS AND DOES NOT BACK THEIR CLEARLY INFERIOR PRODUCT! |

Mazda Miata SE
Strength:
Great road holding. Very stable. Good acceleration. Very reliable mechanically Fun. Fun. Fun.
Weakness:
Underpowered engine. (1.6, now changed to 1.8) Pop-up headlights that allow rain in and short out the lightbulbs. (This has been fixed as well on the newer models) Passenger wing-mirror isn't fixed. If it's knocked out of place, you can't fix it unless someone is in the seat to fix it for you. Stable in snow but not in heavy rain. Hit a puddle and you'll aquaplane across it. I got this car new in 1991. It was the first of the SEs and they made it in British Racing Green only with tan leather interior. I've driven it year round since then, but I don't do a lot of mileage. It's now 2003 and I've got 100,000 klm on the car. It's given me no trouble at all beyond doing the brakes five years ago and replacing the timing belt last year. Just beginning to rust on the bottom. I'm trading it in for another Miata SE as this is the best car I've ever owned and it is hell fun to drive. |
