Strength:

Less wear on syncros for people who dont force shifts.

Weakness:

The price per bottle is high.

This stuff is great easy on the syncros and our cars have fast wearing syncros. It improved my shiftiblity for something that cost as much as mobil full synthetic gear oil. Alot of you guys I noticed saying it hurt your transmission used the gl5 version wich isnt made for use with syncros and synthetic flow better and you dont need to use thicker or thinner because of them use what your owners manuel recommends such as mine gl4 75w-90.

Strength:

Smoother shifting, car runs smoother and faster.

Weakness:

Hard to find in any of my local auto part shops, had to order on-line.

Replaced my manual transmission gear lube with Red Line MTL. Wow. It shifts so much better, but the thing that I wasn't prepared for was the better gas mileage. I have run five tanks of gas through my car and used to get 26-27 mpg all the time. The last five tanks I've gotten 28-29 everytime.

Strength:

No significant benefit over factory OEM transaxle oil.

Weakness:

May have caused transmission failure in my car. Difficult to determine correct product application.

I strongly advise against usiung RedLine oil for use in transmissions, period. In my experience it offered no real benefit (in drivability or otherwise) over the OEM oil., and may even have caused damage. I used 75w90ns gear oil in my 01 Prizm since it was new and the transmission just failed (complete lock up) at 87k miles. One of the countershaft bearings went out. This is an extremely rare failure for this Toyota transmission. In fact, I could find no other instance of this type of failure. I therefore conclude it was due to the RedLine oil. For my car, it was very difficult to figure out exactly which Redline product was applicable. Perhaps I selected the wrong one. At any rate, I used Redline in my transmission and my transmission failed. I will never use any Redline oil in any tranmission ever again. Of course I cannot speak for the engine oil; it is probably ok. And I do continue to use the WaterWetter in my radiator. As to synchro wear: the synchros in my transmission wear good as new, as were the gears, but the bearings went out.

Strength:

Better shifting, especially in cold weather.

Weakness:

Someone posted a review suggesting that MTL accelerates synchro wear. Visiti the RedLine website and read their extensive white paper (tech info), in which synchro wear is extensively addressed. Form your own conclusions...

used in two saabs, both with noticeably improved results. if your car already has great shifting, then MTL is probably a waste of money. But for the euro (and probably american) cars, it;s what the doctor ordered. VAC, a high end BMW enineerign mod shop, endorses it. And saab enthusiasts have posted positive MTL experiences for many years.

the price in the UK !!!!

I was reading up on reviews on the MTL oil as I was thinking of using it in our SAAB 900, and I just thought I'd make You all a bit happier in the US, You pay roughly US$ 7-8 /quart over there and think it is a bit dear :-) The price per quart in the UK is .......wait for it.......THIRTY TWO (32) US$ (£18.50/quart) Now, Don't tell me that didn't make Your day :-)) But hey, We pay $5.40 /US gallon of gas over here :-() All the BEST, Magnus

Strength:

Shifts a little smoother but this does not jutify the price or the accelerated synchro wear casued by MTL

Weakness:

Accelerated synchros wear

My first intial impressions were that Redline MTL was good. However after having this stuff in my tranny for about six months I no longer think that. Driving style has alot to do with how this stuff works. If your drving style is putting around grandma style you will love this stuff, but as someone who races, this stuff will eat your synchros up. I have seen this time and time again, as well as my own tranny. The reason is becasue this stuff is too thin. has the viscosity of ATF. ATF was not intended for manual transmissions. My advice stick with OEM.

Strength:

Initial feel was good. Deteriorated slowly over about six to eight months.

Weakness:

Apparently MTL sheared down to a thinner fluid that no longer worked well as a lubricant. The "black metallic" material was obviously material worn off either the gears or synchronizers.

Used Redline MTL for 14,000 miles in five speed manual transmission. Initial feel was good, but shifting gradually deteriorated until I drained it out and replaced with a conventional fluid. The drained fluid was thin, cloudy, and there was a spoon full of black, metallic sludge on the magnetic drain plug. Shifting is now smooth, without crunching or dificult shifts. Just before I changed the MTL, there were times when it would refuse to go into a gear, and I would have to go back to neutral and try again. Those problems are gone now.

I had no problems with my BA7-5 tranny prior to using this stuff, but what could it hurt. Well, shortly after putting it in, the box started leaking like crazy. Not too much after that, the gearbox failed. It could have failed for something totally unrelated or from the fluid loss, but I''m not going to ever try this stuff again.

Strength:

Fully synthetic, should last longer than factory fluid. Meets all certifications for Honda transmissions. You can''t say that about the 10W30 that jiffy lube just put in your transmission case!!!! Oh and yes they did but 10W30 in there.

Weakness:

Cost. But not much if compared to factory fluid.

After reading reviews all over the internet, i decided to go a head an try it. What could be the harm. The transaxle had 50,000 miles on it and had the original fluid changed at 36,000. I had not been experencing any problmes. After putting the fluid in and running about 4,000 miles there is still no difference. But you can''t really fix whats not broken. If you are having syncro problmes, immediatly swap this stuff in.

Strength:

Slightly more feel in the shifter.

Weakness:

Hard to find. Only very slight difference from OEM synthetic fluid.

Bought this on the strength of the reviews here and RedLine''s site. Put it in a new ''01 Chevy Prizm (Corolla). There was no night-and-day difference since the car was new and the OEM fluid is a full synthetic. The only thing I noticed was that there was more "feel" in the shifter--like I could feel the synchros engaging. It maybe made it feel more mechanical. Ironically, some might say it got notchier.
