Model Reviewed: edelbrock performer carbs Dual Quad

Strength:

Strengths would be, Your own strength in just keeping your temper by not throwing these JUNK carbs into the trash can.

Weakness:

Every thing about this old ( and it is old) antique design is its weakness. Never easy to set up and never ever any sort of quality. I can see very clearly why they are so cheap in price. They are not for someone who wants safety, quality and maintenance fee service with high performance power. Face it, they are JUNK at every direction. Edelbrock needs to move on to a newer design and stop defending this JUNK Carburetor.

Purchased two (2) brand new Edelbrock performer carbs for a 71 Barracuda with a well blue-printed and radical high performance 440 CI engine using an Offenhauser Dual Quad intake manifold. At first, it was great (I mean really great) for the first couple of months. Cars started very well even when cold, ran very good. but within 6-months the carbs became rich, extreamly hard starting, would not hold fuel in bowels when engine was turned-off to such a point it was filling up my crank case with gas on a $10,000 motor! JUNK, JUNK, JUNK. This is what these carbs are, only Junk. Three of my friends had the exact same problems all within the same time frame as I. No suprise just dissapointment. My carbs were rebuilt twice by a nation wide well known carb specialist with zero success. He actually gave up on the third time and then told me his shop stopped working on these Edelbrock Performer Carbs several years prior due to this issue of running good out of the box and turn to crap within a year problems. I then rebuilt them myself 3-more times with no better or worse result. Put car on chassis dyno and it was terrible. Edelbrock sent me on a multiple lost of cash spending tour to make up for their out of date junk carbs. Tech support if you can call these sarcastic kids as knowledgeable techs? Finally said the engine was so radical that it would not work with these carbs. I reminded the Techs that it was Edelbrock who recommended the setup from intake heads to cam to carbs! There actual answer was, "Sir, if you don't like it call your lawyer or go elsewhere." A Real Can't Do Group and a Class Act. I went to a dual Deamon Carb set up and now the car ran the dyno well above the engine builders prediction of 600 hp. Plus, the car actually is not a fuel hog if you keep your foot out of it.

Easy tuneability, sharp looking. if you don't know how tune this so it leans out go EFI IDIOT

Weakness:

keepin the rubber from spinnig!

Great carb...went for carb on my stang to see if it is any better the EFI, still debating...I bought this from a guy i know it came off a chevy 350 tow truck. it was far better then my holley doudle pumper paper weight. The carb is easy to adjust and maintain. This is best carb for the money and lowered my 1/4 mile time from 14.8 to a 14.6 worth $100

As if there are any(fuel injection may be better>only multi-port)

I put the#1403 500cfm on my amc258 jeep with a clifford intake and it is awesome! I had to re-jet it a little but hey,it's like that with any carb!>if you don't like it buy fuel injection. Edelbrock is by far the best carb I've ever used!!Anybody that has ever had problems with them had better get a clue how to diagnose a sticking needle and seat>come on people!!

Strength:

Great when new.

Weakness:

The aluminum housing wears out and there are now easy fixes.

I bought the 500 cfm 1404 carb in 1995. It worked great out of the box. The engine was strong, had great throttle response, and would fire up and run without having to work the throttle. After several years, the carb just wore out. The aluminum case around the metering spring actually erodes. The engine now is dependent on the choke and gas pedal to start and stay running until it is warmed up. I think I could ignite my exhaust if there was a sparkplug in my pipe because it runs too rich. I have the leanest springs and settings and it is getting worse. I have tried to rebuild the carb twice, which is simple, but still won't fix the problems

REALLY REALLY good at pissing me off!

Weakness:

way too rich, off idle misfire, requires pedal to the floor to start up, pours in gas, this truck will never go to california

I have a 327 in an 84 GMC S15 fresh nothing radical 9:1 compression. Carb nothing but trouble, runs way too rich, requires constant attention, engine misfires off idle, i have rebuilt it, changed float levels and metering rods about a million times, it gets 10 miles per gallon no matter how you drive it pushing only 3000 lbs. Im about to get a tuned port off a camaro, then im gonna tie this one to my to my bumper and drag it at 130 MPH!

Strength:

easy tuneability and easy calibratoin charts to go by.No power valves or leaky bowl gaskets.Holds tune for years without having to adjust them all the time. very dependable and stable carburetors.

Weakness:

the only thing I could find bad to say about these carbs is if they sit for a few weeks somehow the fuel evaporates or leaks out. this is really no big deal!!! It just takes a extra few seconds to get it to start.

these carbs are great with alot less hassle like holleys. It needed a little jetting but was very close right out of the box.I have had two brand new holleys and both ended up being junk!!! I love these carbs and I can't wait to try one of the new edelbrock AVS thunder series carbs!!!

I have used holleys but they do not compare to the edelbrocks for street/strip use. Quadrajets are also good carbs

Strength:

price, simpicity, sturdy construction

Weakness:

runs rich and can clog up unless you buy extra jets, rods, needles and seats

sturdy and simple. real delight to tune after using oem carbs. can be taken apart repeatedly without damage, a quadrajet carb will be junk in no time if you fiddle with it a lot. gives good response but runs rich out of the box, ok for the drags but too much fumes for the street. have had trouble with carb clogging and had to install high flow needles and seats. best of all, primary rods and springs can be changed without removing carb top cover.

Strength:

Price, ease-of-setup comared to Holley....

Weakness:

It's a bit wide, and I had to do some re-dressing of the cooling hoses so they wouldn't interfere with the throttle and choke linkages.

Just put a pair of 1409 Performer carbs in my twin-engine boat (1973 Slickcraft) with Merc (Ford 302) motors. I replaced some *old* Holley 600cfm carbs (original equipment) which were both at the end of their useful lives, even with full rebuilds... Both engines fired right up and purred like kittens. I'll be taking it on a run to lake Erie (about 15 minutes down the river) tomorrow to do a full-power test - tonight I just idled around a bit and listened. What sweet music these carbs help the motors to make!!!

Doesn't clean up very easily. Having trouble with the floats. Wasn't adjusted to fit the engine right out of the box, but what can you expect.

It is a very nice product. I bought it mainly becuase i have heard only good things about the cardurater. Seems the be good enough fo me!
