Strength:

None I could find.

Weakness:

Poor customer service. Rrental agents that lie. Management that does not care.

Thrifty Car Rental, Austin Bergstrom Airport.
Thrifty Car Rental agents cannot be trusted. DO NOT rely on them to tell you what is in the contract. READ IT carefully no matter how long it takes, and don't skip the fine print. Otherwise you risk being charged MUCH more than you thought you agreed to when you return the car. If that happens, you are SOL. The best they can offer is an apology because YOU misunderstood. WTH??? I does not matter that they mislead you or just outright lied at the time of rental. They added a "surcharge" and a "fuel fee" that I was specifically told would NOT be in the contract. It was in the fine print, and my mistake was believing what I was told. I won't make that mistake again, because I'll never do business with them again.
They were fully aware that I would never do business with them again BEFORE they offered a small voucher toward a future rental. Yeah, that'll do a lot of good. Note they never denied or acknowledged what I was told by their rental agent. Apparently lying rental agents is not a problem for them. They just ignore it entirely.
Next time, I'll walk rather than do business with them. Extremely unethical behavior.

flex fuel, previous accident not repaired, blood in cabin

I reserved a van so I could take my family to the family reunion in Missouri. I rented the van from June 26 to July 3, 2009. I though I was getting a good deal when I put in my order Mar 5th, 2009. The e-mailed sheet said $360, but when I pucked up the van it was $580. OK they got me. I was in a strange city, could not just go get another one. I flow into St Louis to pick up my family in New Baden Il. So I got the Van drove to their house in New Baden. As we are going back towards Missouri my son in law said to me the brakes are giving out. By the time I got it back to the car rental location the brakes were gone. I had my daughter, her husband and 3 grandchildren in the Van. I explained to the desk attendant Scott our problem and he let us exchange it for a Van that worked in a safe manner. He was really nice. So we got into a pretty blue van, it was almost dark and we were really late getting back on the road. Here start the second problem with this company. We were not informed that the van ran on flex fuel. We could not find many stations that had flex fuel so we did not use the van except for 3 days. It sat in the drive way. Unable to locate fuel was a main concern. We were not informed that this van had been in an accident and was missing the front bottom passenger bumper. It was also cracked. There was blood splattered on the inside roof. I have pictures if anyone want to see them.

June 2009. We went to pick up our 'Toyota Yaris, Chev Aveo or similar' from Thrifty LAX. Our rental was fully paid with all insurance, CDW etc - yet he still tried to sell us, pushed and cajouled us, to buy TRIPSAVER® 24-hour Roadside Assistance, which was included anyway, but didn't cove if you lost your keys ETCETERA - an extra $5.99 per day - I asked for a brochure as to what the ETCETERA was and he slid open a few drawers and 'can't find the brochure' - A COMPLETE RIP OFF an extra $84 plus tax for 2 weeks in case you lose your keys. (There was a spare key in the glove box anyway which we carried separately) The Yaris does 42mpg so is not so bad for the environment given we were to drive over 3000 miles in 2 weeks.
They ONLY have Chryslers, which was confirmed later by Thrifty staff. There are NO Yaris or Aveos available. The smallest available was the Dodge Caliber or, as we know it, the Dodgy Low Caliber - a truly dreadful car - that does less than 30mpg at best. Such uncomfortable hard rubbery seats for thousands of miles of piles! The front tyres were about 1mm from the fully worn line when we picked it up. The issuing guy didn't care and there were only much larger PT Cruisers and people movers as an alternative. The WORST aspect is that not one of the cars in the economy/ compact class has ANY way to hide your luggage no boot/trunk or cover - so if you are visiting a National Park or stopping for a meal YOU ARE VULNERABLE. The caliber thing screamed around every corner due to the tyre wear and bad handling charactistics, it also had out of balance tyres - things you don't notice till you have taken it. And yes, it was covered in scratches which you MUST REMEMBER TO NOTE on the condition report.
It was so bad we changed it for a PT Cruiser (slightly better) after a week.
As Chrysler is bankrupt, Thrifty staff told us that instead of the lease system they used to have, which I assume requires full maintainence of the cars - they dispose of them at auction - so maintaining condition may not be a priority!
If you INSIST on renting from Thrifty - Don't pay extra for a 'compact' over an 'economy' they are the same cars at LAX and Las Vegas at this time!
We are worried about our Credit Card bill - yet to come - given the horror stories we have heard about being blamed for other peoples damage to Thrifty cars .... awaiting outcome ...

Thrifty car rental in Fort Lauderdale makes unreasonable inspections upon return. They found a damage spot under the front bumper that was not visible to an untrained eye. I recommend that anyone renting from Thrifty take the extra 15 minutes and document every nick and stain; checking in the trunk, under the hood, under the front and rear bumpers.

Strength:

Did get an upgrade from a Charger to a 300M. It was that or a Van.

Weakness:

Rude employees. Stood in the 'fast" Blue Chip line while they diddled with some gal who was not Blue Chip about a convertible she had reserved and they did not have. Held up a bunch of us.

Thrifty is a rip off. How do you get extra rental dollars? Just charge for a spouse to drive the car and charge $10 per day. You have to go to the somewhat hidden terms and conditions and sort thru it to find that in every state but CA - they will not allow it, there is a $10 charge. So a $122. per week rental is really almost $200 but you need to smile because they don't charge you tax on it. GET REAL - find some other company to rent from

Same story--returned car at the LAX location, no problems, no accidents, then 6 weeks later receive notice of damage and claim for $500. They checked the car in--no problems (because there were none), then they started calling. I've hired an attorney. Research shows Thrifty to have numerous such incidents, and that they intentionally and agressively go after so-called 'unmanaged' renters--i.e. individuals, small business owners, etc, who are not part of a corporate account. No other problem with any other company ever in more than 25 years of renting cars.

Thrifty claimed the car was damaged when I returned it on March 13. I caused no damage and told them so. I received a demand to pay $996.88. I had my attorney write them to indicate this damage was not caused by me. No luck. The only response received was another "final" demand to pay, even though as I had pointed out there was a severe ice storm in Indianapolis on March 4 when I had rented another car at Thrifty and Thrifty employees were using ice scrapers to open trunks and doors. I witnessed this as I could not open the trunk of the car I rented to put in the luggage. I find it odd, given the close time frames that some of the supposed damage (which amounted to scratches on the bumper) wasn't caused by Thirfty employees themselves. I also found 5 days out of service was high on the estimate they forwarded. The estimate was for a new bumper cover.

Strength:

Advertised price sounded good. Car was adequate.

Weakness:

Either professionalism or integrity was absent, and the actual price turned out to be VERY high!

Thoroughly Dissatisfied! Wondering whether Thrifty is incompetent ... or worse

I rented a car from Thrifty in Seattle for ten days, returning the car in the same condition as received. As far as I could tell, the car was undamaged when I returned it, but Thrifty had no one available to inspect the car when I returned it, at about 9:00 am. I had a plane to catch, so I left the keys at their counter. Several months later, Thrifty billed me for replacement of a chipped or cracked windshield, including loss of use of the vehicle. Their paperwork showed an estimate for windshield replacement dated a week after I returned the car, which is the only clear evidence they provided to me regarding when the damage was noticed. Rather than discussing their claim, Thrifty in Seattle referred me to a collection agency that offered a choice between payment and legal action. My best guess is that the car was damaged at some point during the seven days between the day when I returned the car and the date of the repair estimate, probably late in that period. Since I was the most recent person to have rented the car, they charged me for the damage and for an extended rental until the damage was repaired.

I'm shocked and disappointed. The one time I had a broken car window, I called a repair shop the day the damage occurred, and the shop both provided an estimate and repaired the damage that day. I can't imagine that in a business that makes money from having cars available they would wait a week after observing damage to even get an estimate. I also cannot imagine that a reputable car rental company would charge a customer for damage without a clear indication that the damage occurred during the rental period.

Thrifty's corporate office provided no help, since they say they have no authority over disputes with franchises. The main reason for dealing with a franchise is that the corporate office will enforce standards of honesty and professionalism. Since they failed to do so in the face of a valid customer complaint, I will never rent from Thrifty again. There are plenty of honest and professional car rental companies, and next time I will choose one of them - anyone but Thrifty.

I've rented from multiple other companies and been completely satisfied with Avis, Hertz, Payless, and many others.
