Failure to honor contract. Booked a mid sized car for overnight to avoid leaving our vehicle at the airport while on vacation. No problem with the web-site. Got to the airport, was dropped off since I would have a car. Dollar would not rent the car due to a very old credit rating problem. I paid cash for my last Freightliner, had enough funds in checking to have bought the rental in question, but since I don't have enough open accounts, I had to take a cab home, and leave my car at the airport parking lot for two weeks.

Everything. Customer service, false violation charges, delays, failure the pick up at airport I rented a car from Dollar Rent a car in Portland, Me from 4/10-4/19 of 2014. I started trying to reach them as soon as my plane landed but it took more than 45 minutes to reach a person who was rude, had a very difficult to understand accent and refused to connect me with their local office. I waited at the airport for 2 hours before finally becoming furious and demanding to be picked up. Once I was at the rental office, I was told I'd have to wait another 20 while they washed the car. Clearly they didn't have one available so they pretended they didn't know I needed to be picked up. The office manager refused to discuss and changed the subject. Two weeks after I returned the car, I got a notice from their processing center claiming I'd skipped out on a toll and they were charging me a $15 admin fee on top of the dollar. I lived in Maine for 46 years, paid tolls regularly and never had any issue even close to what they claim. Of course they wanted to know if I'd gotten a receipt, banking on that not being the case. I wouldn't assume I'd get scammed so why would I get a receipt? Well, when you choose to do business with this company, expect to get lied to, inconvenienced to the extreme and scammed for fees after the fact because that's how they operate. Not at any point has anyone from that company attempted to contact me to resolve any of the multiple issues I had. Great business. Not. Stay away from this rental company. Your savings will be eaten up by lost time and scams. |

When it comes to renting from Dollar Rent A Car, take a pass and rent from another rental company. What a truly awful experience.

Dollar Car Rental engages in questionable business practices. Dollar Car Rental provide very poor customer service. On February 16, 2013, Dollar Car Rental at the Fort Myers, Fl Airport (RSW) refused to honor my confirmed reservation for a vehicle. [After booking my reservation with the BookingGroup, I received a written confirmation and a reservation number from both Dollar Rental Car and the BookingGroup.] When I arrived to pick up my vehicle, I provided my confirmation notices and the Dollar Car Rental representative refused to honor my confirmed reservation. She charged me $490.55 instead of the $220.01 confirmed rental cost that was supposed to be payable upon arrival. I needed a vehicle so I had no choice. It appears that Dollar Car Rental is now engaging in 'bait and switch' business practices. |

Here's my story: 3 days into my car rental, my car would not start in the morning. I called the Dollar roadside assistance and they told me that it sounded like a dead battery from my description. At that point I looked at the headlight switch thinking I left the lights on, but the switch was in the off position. They had a person come out and jump start the car. He did a quick check of the charging system and said it wasn't working properly and to return the car without shutting it off as it may not start again. I drove 90 miles roundtrip to exchange this car and wasted half a day of vacation due to this problem, not to mention the gas I paid to drive the extra 90 miles. At the end of my rental I was charged $58.95 towing fee for the jump start. Dollar says there was nothing wrong with the car and refuses to take this charge off my bill. |

We rented a car a Dollar rent a car. No spare key was provided at pickup. The Desk employee informed us that this was company policy.. After a few days the key-electronics did not function anymore. The car did not start and were stranded. The help of route assistance was terrible. No help at all. We had to arrange stowing (via 911) & repair and had to pay all costs. NEVER dollar rent a car again... The cars the rent are not to be trusted... and so is the company.. Never rent a car at Dollar rent a car.. |

The list is too long We arrived at Denver International Airport at 11:00 p.m. We waited 15 minutes for the shuttle to pick us up. We had reserved 2 cars; we were staying at the same hotel but I was traveling north and my husband south. When we got to the desk, a very crabby woman named Chendar asked about our reservation. I stated that we had reserved 2 cars, one in my name and one in my husband's. She asked if we were going to the same place, because it would be easier if we only rented one car. I was flabbergasted! Did she not understand that car rental companies are in the business of renting cars? Did she really think that easing her job was more important than satisfying my rental needs? I stated that we, indeed, still needed the two cars. I had reserved my car (a larger SUV) to be returned on 5 days later and a smaller SUV for my husband to be returned in 2 days. We got as far as signing everything on the screen when it occurred to me to confirm that she was giving me the correct car/rental term. She wasn't. So we had to back up and start over with her foul mood getting progressively worse. After 20 more minutes of incompetence of rudeness, we got our rental folders and left. We were greeted in the parking lot by a wonderful man named Romell Brown. He was delightful to work with and apolgized for his co-worker. He gave us 2 free upgrades, we chose our cars and drove to the security booth to leave. The barely english speaking woman at the booth noticed that my husband's name was on both reservations and the car can only be driven off the lot by the person named in the contract. We demanded to see the manager but she said we needed to go back to the office. She closed up booth and walked away from us so she could help the people behind us. We went back to Romell; he went to get the superviser. 15 minutes later we had my name on my car, which, incidentally, turned out to be the 2 day rental. It was after midnight by the time we left. After 2 days, we decided to extend my car. We called ahead to avoid the $59 charge for returning a car more than 24 hours late. She made the change but now the daily rate had gone up by $10.00 per day. We returned the car at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday after filling up both cars at the gas station 1/2 mile away. No one was outside to accept the car. I was told to note the mileage and a lot driver took me inside. The woman inside was kind but said I needed to produce the gas receipt to prove that I had filled it less than 10 miles away. I didn't have the gas receipt; I had given it to my husband for his expense report. She pointed to a sticker on the folder that stated just that and said that I had agreed to it during the rental fiasco. I called my husband and asked him to bring in the receipt. He was furious but said he would bring it in. The counter woman finally said "never mind", she didn't need it. I don't know what they think it proves except that I "got" gas nearby, not that I "filled" the car. Idiots. We dropped the second car on Sunday morning. If the shuttle had waited 30 seconds longer we would have been on it. Instead we waited 15 minutes and I finally went to ask the lot attendant where to get a shuttle. He said one would be along soon but we could always request one inside the office. I went inside the office and requested from the agent there. She looked at me but didn't respond, answer or promis service. Nothing. Crickets. Additionally, I rented a car from Thrifty the week before in Mexico. I discovered after I arrived that we were required to provide proof of foreign liability coverage or pay for the insurance at $15 per day. This added $200 to an already very expensive rental. I didn't get the car I expected, waited an hour, and then was forced to pay for unexpected insurance. It would have been nice to know that was coming when I made the reservation. Bottom line, Dollar/Thrifty have given up customer service in favor of the almighty dollar. Pay the extra at another company for reasonable service. |

The service was quick, the SUV was better than I had expected
Weakness:
The information given on the web site when I booked and/or the agent I dealt with was not truthful I booked a Lock Low and Go. Supposed to be a Mid size or Larger vehicle that would sit 5 passengers and had trunk space for 4 large suitcases. My wife and I were travelling with two kids so thought this would be fine. We arrived at the airport and they told us that the car we had rented was a PT Cruiser. I said fine the agent looked at our 4 bags and said they simply would not fit in the trunk and offered an upgrade.... for a fee. For the low price of $180 more I could upgrade from a PT Cruiser to a Ford Escape. I declined. She talked some more and because I was a repeat customer they could do it for $80 dollars more and since she told me that my suitcases simply would not fit in the trunk of my rental car I agreed to the upgrade. I also prepaid gas as she told me that their prices were cheaper than local stations (not true). I went and loaded up the luggage and kids into the SUV and before leaving the lot I surveyed the parking area and much to my dismay. There was NO PT Cruiser's on the lot!!! Yes I had paid to upgrade from a vehicle that they didn't have available to begin with. I felt taken advantage and although vehicle was excellent and almost brand new, I simply do not like doing business with those who are not honest with their clients. I am not sure if I will go back to them again. |
