I work at a body shop in North Carolina and we have worked on quite a few Geico jobs the first one we worked on was a Geico customers fault and we were fixing his car because he has comprehensive. They cut us a check to begin with and we thaught that every thing would be ok, but my boss thaught that the Geico adjuster should have give money for the frame to be pulled and the adjuster claimed it wouldnt need it....Well it did and so we paid out of pocket to get it pulled instead of making the guy wait for the Geico guy to come out and estimate it. We finished the car with out ever being paid for the frame work after calling faxing griping to them and hearing that the check was in the mail for close to a month we got a check 6 weeks after the car was gone...strike 2...We worked on a blazer that a young couple had just baught (still had 30 day tags) they were hit by a Geico customer. I guess Geico had given them trouble about paying for a rental car so they got a lawyer before we got the blazer to work on and finaly Geico paid for the bill at the storage place and for the tow bill. We talked to the same claims aduster that we had talked to on the first car so we went to his superiors.ha! They were just as bad if not worse. We finnished the blazer and didnt get a supplement for 2 months...I dont know if they do this to all small body shops or to all body shops in general. Bad way to do buisness.

I called GEICO to get a quote for coverage and submitted my payment to initiate my policy, however after 3 weeks of being enrolled I was told that my coverage would be cancelled because I had a suspended license. Mind you I had transfered my WA State drivers license over to MD in which had never been cancelled or had any violations against. I called both WA and MD and confirmed that my drivers license in deed was still active. GEICO are racists and based their decisions soley on my credit history. A year later I tried calling them again who gave me a quote for new car and was given a quote of $536 for 6 months, only to be put on hold after they ran my credit through and told that it increased to $958 for 6 months. Their reasons was a ticket for a busted head light, which does not count as points on my record.

My conclusion is that they are very RACIST and base their decisions off of salaries and credit history. Please take your business elsewhere!!!

Strength:

Good claims response time. Got a windshield replaced at no deductible charge. They were the cheapest out there for someone with one "oops" on their record.

Weakness:

Their customer service is a bit cumbersome to get a hold of during business hours. Too bad their rates really aren't the cheapest out there. Progressive saved me over 50 bucks every 6 months. So I changed over. Go figure.

I would recommend if only you don't mind not seeing anyone face-to-face. They have a true 24 hour claim service. Too bad they aren't the cheapest out there for me. I have a perfect 5 year record to boot. I'll stick with the lowest price (Progressive).

State Farm for many, many years (more than 8 years). I would've stayed with them if they would've allowed for 1 "oops" without a horrendous surcharge. Oh well. I always shop for the best price.

Strength:

Price is consistantly among the lowest, and unlike other companies, doesn't tend to climb every year. I had a claim during the Hurricane that was handled very quickly and my rates remained the same.

Weakness:

None

I price check every year and the rates remain within $50 of the lowest annually for our two cars. The claim response was excellent, sending a agent to our house days after a hurricane.

The 24/7 support is also great when your shopping for a car on sunday and you want to know what your new rate is going to be.

Strength:

Easy to start policy.

Weakness:

Impossible to make changes. Bait and switch quotes. Outright lies as per state law quotations.

Every 6 month renewal they raise rates. If you decide not to pay monthly with the $4 an month charge, They will raise your rates $4 a month on the next renewal. When my daughter moved out, the made me drive 30 miles to thier office to sign an exclusion to remove her from the policy. several months later, I moved to another state, let them know, and nearly a month later get a bill saying they put my daughter back on, raised the rates $300.00 for 6 months more than the quote for the new state and outright refused to take he off MY policy unless I get a utility bill with her name on it. I . They won't even close my policy. Once when I did use roadside assistance on my cellphone. The operator wouldn't send anyone unless I knew the zipcode where I was.

Weakness:

Dishonest "bait and switch" tactics to lure new customers

I went to Geico because AAA was raising my rates due to 2 minor traffic tickets. Geico said no problem, they "forgive" the first ticket, so I would still be eligible for the "good driver" discount. When my first 6-month renewal came up, they had raised my rate, saying the agent I talked to originally was "mistaken" about their policy. Geico's practices border on consumer fraud. Don't count on the low rates they may initially offer.

Weakness:

Inconsistent rates...discrimination when it comes to determining rates...not being honest with consumers about how they determine their rates.

I have been a Geico employee for 5 years. I can tell you, as an "insider", that many of these complaints listed here about Geico are true. Geico cares about one thing, and one thing only. You guessed it...profit. They look for whatever way they can to make a profit....often in underhanded ways. If consumers KNEW the elaborate and sneaky methods that auto insurance companies have of making more profit, there would be a such a stink. A BIG stink. I think that insurance companies like Geico should be required to divulge how they determine their rates. As a consumer, you do have the right to go to your state insurance commisioner, and they will give you information about rates that the insurance company will not. They insurance co. calls it "proprietary information".
For example, your rate could vary as much as $1,000 per six months depending on the subjective information you give them at the time you purchase a policy. If you tell them that you are a white-collar professional, you will most likely get a much lower rate than if you tell them that you are a mechanic. If you don't believe me, just try it. And it's LEGAL!! Insurance companies use "statistics" to determine their rates. One of the statistis they use is profession. Or age,or gender, or geographical location. So, depending on this subjective information you give them, your rate couold vary greatly. It also could vary depending on the agent you happen to get on the phone. There is way too much room for outright discrimination.
By the way...they are a terrible company to work for, also. They have a very oppressive mentality, much like the companies of the 50's and 60's...very closed minded, big-brother like. They are notoriosly a bad company to work for. Why have I been there five years? They are the largest employer in my area, and there aren't that many jobs around here. I'm looking for a new job now, though.
All of this info I have given is probably true for most other large auto insurance companies. People are being ripped off. I hope that they there is enough public outcry that the insurance companies are forced to change some of their procedures.
