Model Reviewed: P3.12.4

Strength:

A surprisingly great performer for such a small price tag.

Weakness:

Doesn't have all the "audiophile" attractions (binding posts, big magnet, fancy nuke proof basket, etc.) and the outer woofer mounting rings could have been glued on better.

This Lightning Audio P3.12.4 woofer is a real surprise from a general performance standpoint. I was just looking for something that worked good. I was not expecting the smooth deep bass that this woofer delivers. I will admit that the P3.12.4 isn't quite like the $100+ woofers out there, but it still is a really serious performer. I would suggest using a sealed 2 cu.ft or slightly bigger box and filling it about half way or so with polyester fiber-fill dampening material (which is what I did) for the deepest bass instead of the 1.25 cu.ft box that they show in the included paperwork. Whether this will effect power handling or not, I'm not sure. Overall this is a great woofer for such a small price tag. That said, I do have some suggestions. 1) DO NOT use a ported box. The "Q" is much too high (as I found out by experimenting. 2) DO NOT use fiberglass as dampening material. It may ruin the driver (if it doesn't start itching on your skin first). 3) Experiment with the polyester as to how much to use for your best results.
