Model Reviewed: ELW1214

Strength:

A lot of subwoofer for the money.

Weakness:

Not the best bass in a sealed box. Not the loudest sub available.

I was somewhat surprised _ pleasantly so _ to see spring style binding post on this rather inexpensive subwoofer. The rubber surround and decent quality poly cone sweeten the deal. One thing I should mention up front is that this ELW1214 is geared more toward sound quality _ which is what I was after _ instead of really high decibles. Based on my rather unscientific experiments with it, I would suggest using a vented box for the deepest and smoothest bass. The sealed box configuration didn't yield much deep bass. Of course, you have to be a little careful with power in a vented box, but the resulting deep bass makes that issue very small. I used a vented box of about 2 cu.ft. with a port 3 inches in diameter and 5 inches long. The bass sounds like it's well within pipe organ territory.
