none Great 6X9 for the money. I have a Honda Accord DX, such a base model that there were no rear speakers. I had my old head unit from a previous car installed in the Honda nad looked for a good low-cost 6X9. This Polk fills the bill...Great price on ebay. Good bass..clear, smooth highs..for under $100 (way under) you can''t go wrong. I think this speaker is no longer made, so grab a pair NOW!! Strength:
clean, crisp highs
Weakness:
weak bass My previous posting on these speakers really slammed them. However, I now have a Punch 400a4 powering the 692a and the 501a coaxials in my Accord. Before I added an external amp (I was powering with Pioneer DEH-P5200 head unit), these speakers really sucked. Off the head unit, the speakers had a very harsh high end....after listening to them for only a few minutes, my ears would really hurt. I talked to Polk tech support and they assured me this would not be the case if I drove the speakers with a 60-70 watt RMS external amp. They were right! These speakers now approach the crisp, clear sound quality of MB Quartz! The only weak aspect is the bass response, but that doesn't matter with subs! Similar Products Used: Pioneer 6959......Polks sound much better now that I have an amp |

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE POLK 652a CAR SPEAKERS Relatively inexpensive, readily available, offered by a major audio company.
Weakness:
Raspy, harsh, hashy, thin sound with no mid-bass mellowing. Obvviously lacking in clarity and definition. I kept waiting for them to break-in and sound right. It never happened. Regarding the Polk offering I should have been more critical from the start. I thought nothing this bad would be put on the market by a major player. When I wrote to Polk to tell them about my experience. I got a reply that said sorry, your one-year warranty period is over. If you still want to try this product, make sure that you can make a fell-credit exchange if not satisfied. Do not assume the need for a break-in period of use. If they sound bad, they are almost certainly bad. Similar Products Used: Replaced after 15 months of irritation with the MB Quart DKC 116. I suddenly had decent sound and right out of the box. |

Strength:
Crisp, clear highs
Weakness:
Poor midrange and low range sound....speakers seem to distort easily, but not a big deal if you have subs.....with a 70 watt RMS peak, the speakers probably need an amp installed to sound their best. The highs are clear, but the speakers distort easily. I am considering the addition of an amp, so maybe this will help. This is one of only a few speakers that will fit in my '93 Accord rear deck and allow the factory speaker grills to remain. With $160 in the EX501a and the EX692, I'm fairly satisfied, but I would buy something different if special installation considerations were not required. Similar Products Used: Pioneer 6959 |

Great sound quality, rugged construction, low price. I got this at Crutchfield - they were blowing them out because the new EX369s just came out. I also got free Polk computer speakers with the!
Weakness:
None, so far - perhaps the others I tried could sound better, but not at this price. I really like these speakers. When I first replaced my OEM system, I started with a new head unit (Nak CD-45z - because of the good reviews found on this site :)), 2-channel amp, and sub (Kicker CompVRs). I liked the sound, but I wanted a little better SQ. I started by removing the rear 6x9s with some Pioneer TS-6975s, the fronts with some Polk EX602as, and an Orion Cobalt 200.4 4-channel amp. This greatly improved the sound, but I found a few problems. The Pioneers were great, but with the new amp, they tended to distort before the Polk 6.5s in the front. I decided to enhance my system- AGAIN (man, this is an addiction. I might need to get a weekend job at a car audio store just to get my FIX!). I bought a pair of Polk tweeters (read my EX-2500 review) and some 6x9 Polks. I had orignally thought about getting some 6.5 components or coaxials for the rear of my Accord (the round 6.5 speakers will not distort as much as the 6x9 oval-shaped ones) with a conversion template, but then I worried that I may not get enough bass. I considered Focal Polyflex 6x9s, MB Quarts, Infinity REFs and Kappas, as well as the Polk EX692s, EX693s (3 way) and new EX369s (2 ways with a tweeter and super-tweeter). The focals are supposed to be the best, but they are REALLY EXPENSIVE. I didn't want to shell out that kind of money without being able to hear them. I worried that the Infinitys required more power than I could provide, the MBs were a little too bright sounding (for my taste) and kind of pricey also. Apparently, the EX693s and EX369s were just a little too tall to fit well in my existing locations (I'm a little surprised by that, but thats what the crutchfield rep said). I also worried that they might add too much brightness toward the rear. So after listening to most of them (all but the Focals), I went with the EX692s. They sounded the best for the money.
