Strength:
None from what I can see. If you need arrows to slow down then this would be the detector for you.
Weakness:
over rated. Over priced. Arrows are very miss leading. Not worth the $400 price tag. Is not as good as the Passport 8500 Let me first start out by saying that I have used so many kinds of radar detectors and the Valentine one is a VERY over rated detector. But what I find real funny is the fact that the Passport 8500 has been winning test after test after test and there are still people climing that the Valentine one is better when in fact its not. When it comes down to laser NO detector alone can save you from laser and the Valentine one is no exception to the rule. Sure the V1 might have a slight advantage at finding laser? I will give you Valentine people that but its still not even close to good anuff. The only thing the Valentine one dose better then the 8500 is X band range. And if you do your homework you will know that X band radar guns are only in use in two states and very soon will not be in use anywhere at all. I know what Iam talking about because I tested both the V1 and the 8500 and the 8500 has beat the V1 in almost every test that me and 4 other friends of mying did. the testing lasted six mouths and we put both detectors to the test and back again. K band the 8500 sounded 2 mins before the V1 even started to go off. KA band was closer but the edge still went to the 8500 as the 8500 was picking up Talon 35.5GHZ from a whopping 8 miles away. and the V1 picked up that same gun from only a mile away. But over all the Valentine one would be a good min behide the 8500 over the whole Ka band. Now let me talk about the only real reason why the V1 is so over rated its because the radar locator. No one needs arrows to slow down and I mean NO ONE. My arrows are my own two eyes. I think that you need to keep your eyes on the road not your detector. I have to tell all the Valentine one fans about a little story my friend told me about what happed to him just last week. He was doing 80 MPH in a 65 and he has a Valentine one and he was running late to work and he got pulled over by an ST for speeding and his V1 did go off but not in time. He said he had no time at all to slow down. Well he got a speeding ticket that day but on top of that he also got a ticket for having a radar detector on his dash board. Latter on that same day a coworker of his asked him why he did not slow down and he said thats because his V1 did not go off in time and then his coworker said thats real funny because I was on the same road as you where and my detector picked up that same cop from at least 3 miles away and can you V1 people guess what kind of detector his coworker had sitting on his dash board? yes it was a Passport 8500 so what my friend did was sell his V1 off on ebay and went out and got a Passport 8500 and he has never been more happy with any other detector. I rest my case. Similar Products Used: To many to list. |

Strength:
Just bought mine. Now I see why people use them.
Weakness:
None I have been working istant-on radar for 10 years. (state police.) I have pulled over many cars using detectors in the past. When I look inside the vehicle, I always take note of the type of detector in use. Of the hundreds of detectors, I have seen, I have never pulled over anyone using a valentine one. |

Still the best at detecting X band
Weakness:
Over rated, over priced, falses much more the my Passport 8500 Let me first start by saying that the Valentine one is a good detector but Its NOT AS GOOD AS the Passport 8500. If the Valentine one is so much better then the Passport 8500 then why has the Passport 8500 beat the V1 an almost every test done? and Iam not just talking about the radartest website Iam talking about 12 diffiert tests all saying that the 8500 is a flat out better detector then the V1. Its real easy to see. All anyone has to do is go to Escorts website and you will see for yourself that the Passport 8500 has been winning almost all the tests as Escort has quotes from over 12 soures and then go to Mike Valentines website and you will see that he only quotes Car and Driver because thats the ONLY test that the V1 wins. And I happen to know for a fact that the person who dose Car and Drivers radar detector testing happens to work for Mr Mike Valentine so that is why everytime Car and Driver comes out with a new detector test the V1 wins. Oh and one last thing if the 8500 is Junk like some of the V1 owners are saying that it is then why have I picked up radar from well over 6 miles away?. The Passport 8500 is not junk its the best radar detector out there. Similar Products Used: Escort Passport 8500 |

ARROWS AND RANGE AND BOGEY COUNTER
Weakness:
NONE LET ME JUST SAY THAT V1 IS THE BEST AND EVERYTHING ELSE IS JUST JUNK! I GET TIRED OF ALL OF THE ESCORT 8500 OWNERS THINKING THAT THEY HAVE THE BEST BECAUSE IF THEY WERE NOT SO CHEAP THEY COULD DO THEIR OWN TEST TO SEE HOW BIG A PIECE OF JUNK THE ESCORT 8500 IS. VALENTINE ONE IS THE BEST AT RANGE AND DIRECTIONAL ARROWS THAT SHOW YOU WHERE THE RADAR IS BEING PICKED UP FROM AND HOW MANY. AND I KNOW SOME HIGHWAY PATROLMAN THAT SAY VALENTINE ONE IS THE BEST BECAUSE IT CAN PICK THEIR RADAR BANDS UP (K)FROM 3.5 MILES (X)FROM 6 MILES AND (KA)FROM 2.5 MILES YOU WILL NOT BEAT ANY OF THE RANGES FROM ESCORT 8500. IF YOU ARE CHEAP AND WANT A GOOD DETECTOR I WOULD RECOMMEND THE NEW BEL VECTOR 985 IT HAS A LOT MORE FEATURES AND A LOT BETTER RANGE THAN THE ESCORT 8500 EVEN THOUGH ESCORT OWNS BEL THEY PUT A LOT MORE RESOURCES INTO MAKING THE BEL THAN THE SO CALLED WORLDS BEST ESCORT 8500 BY THE WAY WHICH IS A HUGE HUNK OF JUNK Similar Products Used: TRIED ESCORT 8500 IN MY OWN TEST IT LOST OF COURSE AND BEL VECTOR 985 IN MY OWN TEST BEL IS BETTER |

The sensitivity is amazing and the arrows are EXTREMELY accurate. Beats an Escort hands down! The only choice.Bogey counter. size isnt to big. The windshield mount is great!
Weakness:
None really in comparison to how awesome it is I have to say right of the bat that I once was an escort fan, but after trying the v1 I can HONESTLY tell you the Valentine One is better! I used to think there was something behind the reports on escorts site, but from my findings show there isnt. I respect Escort, but there is better. The V1 falses just like any other detector, but its range is sooo much better. I will recommend this to anyone. Ohh as for my 8500 I gave it to a friend, he likes it but he doesnt know about the v1. I was just like you( you may or may not be this person), I didnt know which one was better( v1 or 8500) but i Know now, the V1 is better. Save yourself the hastle and get the v1. Similar Products Used: ESCORT 8500( not bad in comparison to others but not v1 and is HEAVY, wont stay on windshield well), Cobra( CRAP!!!), whistler( I actually would recommend this for under $150), Radio Shack( sooo crapp |

The unit tracks and counts multiple "bogeys" at one time and displays their direction. Reception range is awesome!
Weakness:
Unit should have a hidden mounting option (like the K40) to prevent theft. I just got my Valentine 1 after doing a tremendous amount of research and can't believe ANYONE would give it a 1 star rating! I had 3 K40's before this and the difference is like night and day. The fact that the unit tells you where the radar is comming from is immensely useful, even though you get false alarms, most other detectors only show radar strength. ALL radar detectors give false positives - especially in major city driving. The unit is easy to use by simply turning it on and adjusting the volume. It doesn't appear to have a bunch of "useless" options used as a sales gimmick and works perfectly withought having to fumble over buttons while the unit is mounted. Lastly, I would spend the additional money over the passport because I dont like to buy anything you can get at Best Buy. Similar Products Used: Various models of K40 |

The arrows make the driver comfortable of knowing if its beeping because of a car thats ahead or one that you just passed. Upgrading available, rather than buying a whole new one. Don't believe some of these sites that knock the V1 in their tests. Try it out, if you're not happy return it... You won't, trust me!
Weakness:
price tag wasn't easy but its worth every penny. You'll never buy another, especially any of those plastic ones made by the other companies. The directional arrows are so important... front and rear protection!!! You might as well be bulletproof. Similar Products Used: Whistler and Bel >>>>>>> Go with the arrows, Get a V1! |

High sensitiviy - long range detection Dual sensors for front/rear detection Bogey counters! Nice!
Weakness:
From time to time it "detects" other radar detectors due to "electrical bleeding" (poor casing). This can be annoying as you think it's LASER and it's a cheap unit in the car next to you. You know because it goes away once they turn off. Being the "gadget guy" I am, I always have an interest in the latest and greatest stuff as it comes available. I happened to go to lunch with an associate one day, only to see his new "valentine one" stuck to the windshield. He mentioned it was the "best" on the market. At the price tag of $399, I hoped it would be. I checked out the web site details about this radar detector. After comparing the specs to the other guys, I decided on this one. Needless to say, I've been amazed at the abilities of this unit. I've dodged several possible tickets due to its sensitivity. I've detected police from more than 3/4 mi away (over the hills and such)! I did'nt believe it to be true until the police unit came rolling up from over the hill. Amazing! I was very impressed. Weakness:
K-band falses but its easy to tell with a quick glance at the strength meter or the bogey counter. I have a valentine one the most recent model. all you 8500 users always discount the arrows. thats all fine and good but I dont see you saying anything about the bogey. This is a opinion forum where you post your experiences. the V1 didnt work for you? its all good you just seem to go out of your way to bash it. Don't you have anything better to do? here's the only fact I know. The V1 has saved my ass so many tiems its not funny. I always know where the cops are and can point them out as they come thansk to the arrows. I always get a very long notice on warnings. those are my facts. It works for me. Oh and yes I bought a 8500 for 6 months before I bought the V1. It worked decently for the most part but I got a ticket having it(I was cursed. skipping church to go to the mall.. tsk tsk). I gave the 8500 to my brother. Both are excellent its whatever way you want to go. I just like the arrows + bogey counter. Similar Products Used: 8500, whistler, uniden |

2002 V1.8
Strength:
Two antennas, directional arrows, volume level, windshield mount, SENSITIVITY.
Weakness:
Price, but worth it. Let me start off by saying that I am some what of a radar detector fanatic. Because of this I have tried almost every detector on the planet (see below). I am not a cheerleader for Valentine, if something better comes along, I will probably try it, too. But for now, there is just no comparison. I will give my views on the Valentine One versus it's only real competition, that being from the Passport 8500 and the Bel 980 (now 985). First, the Bel 980 is an ok detector. It is plenty loud enough, but the windshield mount is absolutely horrible. It looks homemade. Anyway, on a day when it was about 85 degrees, I left it under my seat while at work. When I left and turned it on, it failed it's startup loop. It falsed on Ka for probably 4-5 miles. Obviously heat is this detectors enemy. I immediately quit using it, I felt it was about as useful as a snowshovel that falls apart when it gets cold. Other than that, the Bel 980 was fair when it came to detection. I would by no means call it world class, but it was fair. Second, the Passport 8500. This detector is LONG, when I say long, I mean LONG. It is so long, it just looks odd. Anyway, it has alot of features, but the SmartCord and the ExpertMeter I think are gimmicks. The SmartCord? It has two lights on it and a mute button. If you have it in your cigarette lighter, you have to reach down to hit the mute button. It is easier to mute the detector itself. I fail to understand how this cord is smart. The ExpertMeter? It is TOO SMALL, with all those lines building up. Maybe with a long time of use it would get easier, but it takes too much concentration. As far as detection, I think it's fairly good. It's overall best feature is it's ability to not false. If that were the only factor, it would win hands down. But to me, the ONLY thing that matters is SENSITIVITY. The Passport 8500 has less sensitivity than the old Escort DSP (second generation). The Valentine is built like a tank. The earlier versions were clunky looking, but the newest is much better. I find the directional arrows absolutely worth the price. I used to have a 2nd detector mounted in the back of my car, now I don't have to. If you spend money on anything else, you will regret it. It is the most sensitive, reliable, and informative detector out there, period.
