But, it was another car across the next valley coming into the valley, about a mile+. And it was BVR when it first got him. I wish that 1270 was dependable. The Uniden has good visual and audio differentiations. Green, Orange, Red. the K sound needs to be louder.
Weakness:
Falses way too much on Ka (and its sound note is WAY LOUD). Laser goes off in setting sun. My Whistler 1270 circa 1993/4 NEVER falsed a laser. I bought a Uniden after seeing C&D''s review of "cheap" RD''s (1995). Their model scored the best and had good X and K band detection (a little weaker on the Ka). I asked another college student if he liked his Uniden, and he said yes. I bought this model for its intended features, and because I thought my old Whistler 1270 would go haywire in urban driving in Terre Haute, IN (where I was living at the time). Its malfunction was to start falsing in X then go wild in the Ka signal. The Uniden would false just as much, but it wouldn''t jump bands when falsing. But, it falsed (and continues to false) a lot. I have never lived in a state where Ka is in active use. This model, which was actually rated at having an improved Ka over the "cheap" Uniden RD, is really quite poor in the X and K bands which I continue to see in my area. In IN, you would be almost past someone shooting radar (state was X, Counties and Local K) before all four LEDs would light. First blip would be about 3/4 mile away. It did receive blips through the backside of the detector for K and X, and the couple of times I was able to monitor this phenomena in the straight stretches of IN, I almost wish I could mount the thing backwards. In PA and OH where I do most of my driving, the weak detection of X and K are KILLER. OH staties use X from fixed and rolling (just like IN). Although on Interstates, it doesn''t matter because the median is real wide and you''ll be shown going slower anyway on their gun do to the trigonometry vectors. In PA, where they actually just UPGRADED to K band, again, this detector sucks. You''re on top of them before 3/4 LEDs light. Luckily, once you know where PA staties (for they are the only legal radar gun users) sit, you just drive between the points, because it isn''t rolling K, like the county and local cops in IN and OH use. I had much better detection with my old Whistler 1270 after I first got it. I remember a stretch of Route 11 from Boardmen OH to East Liverpool, where the road has long ups and downs. If I remember correctly, there was a state in FRONT rolling WITH me which had its rolling X gun on. I was getting bounce back off of trees, signs and such. Got ahead of him, the RD stopped, then resumed.. I thought possibly there was just a temporary obstruction and was getting his signal again (passing by me and bouncing back at me). Strength:
Cheap and I have never been ticketed while it was turned on. Picks up false alarms
Weakness:
In several instances I''ve made visual contact the same instant the radar detector started to escalate the beep rate. I''ve never felt totally comfortable but it has never let me down. I live in an area where VG2 is used and it had never been picked up by police. (If the police even had VG2 turned on) Overall you get what you pay for although I lack confidence, it does work. It works Its inexpensive VG2 "invisibility" is suspect It doesn''t inspire confidence Similar Products Used: Bel cobra X band oval box |

Nothing, at this price range Reliable; it has saved me an innumerable about of times. Not the best, but a solid buy. If you want a detector for under $100, it is a good choice. Similar Products Used: detectors < $100 |
