ERE G180
Strength:
Everything!
Weakness:
Small levers. I have the IVA C801 multimedia station with the DVA 5205 dvd player along with PPI dcx 300.2 powering a pair of JL Audio TR 6.5" up front and TR 5.25" in rear deck and PPI dcx 500.2 powering a pair of Kicker 05 CVR 12's in a ported box. But with the ERE G180, the difference is amazing! Get this unit! IT's that good! The bass hit crisper and harder, with the adjustable crossover frequencies, gain, and off switch for the police, and you can adjust the 11 bands to suit your ears! Now I am looking for more for future vehicles. Too bad they don't make them any more. Oh yeah, it also has the BBE integrated into it! 5 stars! Similar Products Used: None! Nothing compares to this! |

Even 7 years old, used and all, great product!! dont know why alpine stopped making these??but the built in eq in the head unit does no justice to the sound like this does... Strength:
BBE, 3 preouts, sub croosover, stereo/mono switch for the sub,sub level. Not overwhelming, easy to use.
Weakness:
None Simple, if you don't have this EQ, go get it. It's that good. I use it with an Alpine 7618 deck in my 94 Z28 and they both fit in the dash nicely. This EQ will definitely take your system to the next level. I use it in conjunction with a Hifonics Zeus Z8000 5 channel amp, PPI 6-1/2 components(2 sets),an Alpine CD Shuttle 5959z, and an MTX Thunderform with (1) 10" MTX600 sub. It sounds incredible. The EQ works fantastic with this setup because with 3 preouts it allows me to run the sub in mono, creating a true 5 channel system. Every aspect of your system now becomes adjustable with the addition of this EQ. It made a great system even better. Worth every penny I paid for it. Strength:
Sounds great and it''s easy to use. X-over is a plus.
Weakness:
No theft deterrent. Not digital. The slide levers are hard to control. This is by far the best part of my system. Paired with my Alpine CDA-7875 head unit, I don''t think you can find a better combination for the money. The sound quality is excellent and the unit is easy to use. The only thing I can really complain about is that the slide controls are hard to adjust. Knobs would be much better. You really have to play with it to get the sound you want, but once you get it set, it''s awesome. I have it installed in my Jeep Wrangler and it would be nice to have some kind of theft deterrent. Even after removing the face on the head unit, the EQ is very inviting. Maybe Alpine can come up with something. I would suggest this to anyone that wants to significantly increase the sound quality without a big investment. Similar Products Used: Kenwood. The Alpine is much better. |

Strength:
Excellent Sound Quality, Sub X-over convenient, 11 bands (more than most in-dash EQs, love the push-button on-off sub, 3 pre-outs, phase alignment, etc....
Weakness:
faders are sensitive and take some work to get them exactly where you want them, no theft-deterrence This little EQ is the best part of my system. It's a very powerful EQ that you can use to really tweak the sound the way you like it. One suggestion for Alpine: switch the crossover and the level controls for the sub - people are more likely to want to change the level than the X-over, so put the level on the knob and the x-over on the fader. Theft-deterrence would definitely be nice. Having a quality EQ like this sitting out in your dash is like a big ad that says "I have a kick-butt EQ, so therefore I MUST have a good amp or two AND probably a subwoofer." In order to avoid that, I did a couple of things: in my first car, i mounted it in the glove box. It doesn't take up much room, but it's still accessible. Granted, not as accessible as on your dash, but it's concealed and people don't see it. In my new car, there's a double-DIN sized opening, so the tape player's up top and the EQ's below. In order to hide it, I went to my local custom-installation high-end audio shop and bought a 1'x1' piece of ABS black plastic ($10 or so) - looks just like car material. I'm gonna make a cover for my EQ that I can put over it with velcro or magnets or something. Hope this helps all of you who already own it. For those of you who are considering buying it, DO IT. This is a great investment, and better than all the other manual in-dash EQs. I can't say anything about the digital ones, though. Install's a snap, no problems. Similar Products Used: None |

Ability to control my sub output at the dash level. BBE circuitry enhances the bass level if you want. Variable crossover is nice too.
Weakness:
It blew my rear channel 6X9's the first time I used it (see below) Paid $299 (CAN) at my local dealer. Similar Products Used: I had the older model in my previous car. that's why I bought it |

Strength:
The on/off pushbutton for the sub is very convenient. If you don't have BBE on your headunit, it is also a nice feature. In addition, if you only have one set of RCA preouts on your headunit, the EQ allows you to split it into 6 outputs for front, rear, and sub (right, left).
Weakness:
No complaints, but you don't get the bass boost that you would out of a parametric EQ I got my unit through a friend who worked for Circuit City, so I got the Alpine direct price which was around $150 as opposed to the $270 they wanted for it in the local store. It was definitely worth what I paid for it. I've used it in two installations and found that installation makes a world of difference (The Circuit City install was horrible!) The features are great and it makes for a very flexible and easy to use equalizer. I would recommend it to anyone looking to build a an entry level to mid/high grade system. Strength:
You can turn on and off the sub output at the push of a button. 4V output. Continuously variable sub crossover (also crosses the highs). BBE. Very good THD compared to some digital equalizers I've seen. Sub out phase control. Only 2 channel input, but it has fader controls to make up for it.
Weakness:
No convenience of digital EQ (presets, graphic analyzer) Since this EQ has been around since the early 90's, there's got to be something right about it. Sometimes I don't want to turn on my sub and bass myself up, so I just push a button and the bass is redirected to my mids and highs, effectlely turning off my sub. There is no built in amp so you HAVE to use off board amps to utilize this EQ. It does not have speaker level inputs either so you must have pre-outs from your headunit as well. I would like to clear up a mistake in Geoff's previous review, the rotary nob is to control the crossover frequency of the sub out (30-120Hz), it does not control the sub level, there is another lever for that. I don't think my ears are too sensitive to better sound, but this EQ made a huge improvement to my system off the bat (4V preouts are great compared to my head units 2V). You can get it for less than $200, at that price I highly recommend it for an entry level EQ. Similar Products Used: Sony (can't remember the model number, it's been around for a while, about as long as the ERE-G180, with very similar features.... MXII?) I think overall the Alpine has cleaner sound coming out of it. The BBE feature is a definite plus. |
