Strength:

Neat display, great MD controls, good overall system controls.

Weakness:

No face detach button, deck too deep, volume knob rarely works

I gave $400 for this unit, and it is good, but I could have got something else for the same price with MUCH higher quality. It is lacking in many places.

I have the 880 and I can't speak very highly of it. However it is a pretty solid deck as long as the BBE function on it works. The digital filter is a function that cannot be detected by the normal human ear. Anyone who can actually hear the difference caused by the Digital Filter deserves to get their ears bronzed and put on display. Without BBE this deck is exactly like a 780, I personally think this deck is extremely overpriced. If anyone out there is planning on buying this deck and hooking it up to a mobile ES DSP unit, buy a 780 or a 7850 becuase the BBE function will no longer work after the DSP is put in. I recently put in the DSP and lost BBE, I'm very peeved at Sony. DSP is nice and all, but the BBE was what really made the 880 a solid deck. So my advice is to stay away from this deck and get a 780 or a 7850 if your gonna do DSP. The D/A convertor is nice. I think that's the only really nice thing that I can say about this deck.

Strength:

loaded with features, sound quality, reliable

Weakness:

tuner reception, wired remote

My unit is the 860, which is not listed, but when i read these reviews & saw only 3 stars I was shocked & felt compelled to respond. I used my unit first with the internal amp. It was one of the strongest on board head uni amps I've experienced. I have had this unit at least 3 years & it was in a wreck & now in another car. It hasn't missed a beat. I now am using the preamp outputs including the subwoofer output. The sub out has a variable crossover points & level control on the unit. It has bass & treble turnover settings to help further adjust the sound. It has built in DSP, which is fairly elaborate. I don't use them much. It has several sound fields such as studio, hall, etc. The settings I found useful & innovative were the settings that adjusted the sound to different areas of thecar. You can throw the sound stage forward, to the rear, or if the driver is alone, to the right. As I mentioned I a disappointed in the reception of the tuner. It sounds good. In fact, the sound of this unit stood out amongst the other units in the board. That's why I bouht it. The CD player has great sound & improved when I upgraded to an outboar amp. This unit allows you choice of display color, to write your radio station name orcal letters in, & if the CD contains the info this unit will show your song title. I generally put my money in sound & not bells & whistles. But in car audio you are forced to take the whole package. And I did get sound quality with the Sony ES 860. Things have a way of changing. I recommend do some comparison listening & let your ears be the judge.
