-Radio -No skip CD playback,
Weakness:
MP3 Glitches I got this Sony CDX-MP450X unit at Best Buy. It worked flawlessly for about 2 years. Then it started having problems playing MP3 files. It started cutting off the first half second of each song. The second problem was the scroll button stopped working. It wouldn't scroll through the song names anymore. This was then followed by strange numbers being displayed (example: "Sting2" instead of "Sting-Together"). Then, as mentioned by others, it started making strange warping sounds at various times while the MP3 files are playing - always in the same spot on the songs too. The radio and CD playback are still flawless but I listen to MP3s more than anything else. I have lost all confidence in Sony car audio products. I always knew they weren't the best in this department but this is alarmingly pathetic, especially since other people have mentioned having the same exact problems! Ron (San Diego) |

mp3 playback D-Bass - excellent for subs
Weakness:
loading times 8 character file names realiable deck.... i've had no problems with it except the file name having to be 8 characters or less and the mp3 loading times the D bass system is nice if you have subs .... all you have to do is set your bass and trebles to how you like it with D-bass off and you want to turn up your bass all you have to do is press 1 button. excellent head unit for stock speakers or entry level sound systems for advanced systems - look somewhere else Similar Products Used: Pioneer something- dont remember model # $ 799.99 Cdn |

Strength:
good sound (when it works) plays mp3s
Weakness:
low preamp, poor workmanship/parts looong load times hmmm.. where to begin. when i first purchased this, it was when mp3/cd players were just out and there were only 2 reasonably priced units out. it was great for a while, then the problems started. the cd spin motor went out, and took sony 8 weeks... 8... to fix. when i got it back finally, it was fine for a while, then it started to just stop playing cds and i would have to reset the unit to get them out and have it start working again. |

Strength:
- Goes from each mp3 file at a relatively good speed. - Good skip protection. I've used it for 9 months and i don't remember it skipping EVER. - Supports text on burned CD's (not mp3s) Basically if you burn an audio cd with the text then it will read but for some reason you only get 8 characters with mp3s
Weakness:
Where do I begin....... - On mp3s it skips the first 1/4 second of every song. I found this really annoying at first but I honestly don't notice anymore. - No text for mp3s. This has been mentioned a thousand times on here. If you're like me you have artists names first on mp3 files. Well the player only reads the first 7 or 8 characters and then it gives a number. Like BustaRh8. It's really annoying and you won't get over it. -For those of you who are looking to hook up a sub-woofer then look somewhere else. This player only has front and rear preamp outs. Which means if you hook up a sub then you won't be able to adjust the power of the sub through the deck and it will be connected to either front or rear fade adjustment. - Load times on this player on really ridiculous. After it initially loads (which takes 10+ seconds sometimes) the player goes through files at decent speed but when switching folders it can be really slow. -There is no pause button. This can be really annoying if you accidently turn of the player and then have to reload the mp3 cd. It will take another 10 seconds to load the cd again. I read the reviews posted so far and none of them mentioned all of the weaknesses of this deck so I thought I would inform you guys. At first I found this deck worth the money but now that the 2002's are out i would definitely stay away from this one. I've tried out the new sony mp70 and it kills this machine as far as load times and options. Granted it costs 100 more but I think it's well worth it. I know I will be getting this one as soon as possible. Similar Products Used: I've tried the new sony mp70 and it seems a lot better. |

Easy to find Mp3s when searching. Looks good at night.
Weakness:
No scroll with text. Id3 stuff. Too much reading every time you switch sources and it takes long too. Shuffle sucks! Plays Mp3s, looks good and sounds great! Id3 tag problem with no scrolling unless you tell it too. Cool remote. Nice display Similar Products Used: Aiwa Mp3 |

Strength:
-Nice display that shines out at night. -2 pre-outs for an amplifier -Remote control has a good layout. -MP3s sound good! They sound natural which is not common with cheaper players.
Weakness:
-Display is hard to see in daylight. -Doesn''t display ID3 tags - shows an abbreviated 8-character filename (similar to Win95 filenames under DOS) -Buttons on radio seem cheap and the knob should control the bass/treble/fade/balance controls when those options are selected. And why is ATT (Attentuation) such an important feature that they would illuminate that button at night?? -Radio reception seems weaker than with the stock deck. Or maybe that''s because I wired it. -MP3 CDs take a while to load. Every time you cut power to the radio or change to the radio the CD has the re-load itself. It takes a good 10+ seconds to load a CD before playing it. This is the great player that gave me an excuse to replace the stock deck that came with my Honda Civic. The price was reasonable and the main reason I wanted it was to prevent me from changing CDs while driving. It''s a very complete unit full with any feature you could use. I''m satisfied with it because in the end, it sounds good and works well so that''s basically all I need. really good sound, no equalizer, but enough good good remote control for camping
Weakness:
you know, no id3 tags capability :( I wanted an MP3 player, so I replace the original Alpine cassette with CD changer. I choose first a Kenwood MP3 beeing expensive than Sony (USD 470 here in CHILE) but scrolls id3 tags. The sound of it was SO FLAT!; only in very loud sound volume was possible to get same difference between highs and lows, so I request an exchange. That was the way how this goody came to my Suki. :) Similar Products Used: Kenwood MP3 |

2001 Sony CDX-MP450X
Strength:
1. IT PLAYS MP3s! 2. The remote has almost every control that is on the player. 3. Knobs beat buttons any day. 4. Much cheaper than changer and receiver.
Weakness:
THIS ARE NIT-PICKY DETAILS WHEN YOU LOOK AT WHAT THE PLAYER CAN DO. 1. Mostly RED display (looks VERY cool but I would like some choices.) 2. Long file names don''t work on MP3-CDs (Deal with it. I printed a list of my collection anyways. This is good when friends ask "what ya got on it") 3. No changer control (most don''t need it) I LOVE IT! This is exactly what I needed since I have over 500 MP3s on my computer. I had considered changers but those take too much time to change between discs. All this does is take a little time to read the file system on the disc before playing. After that you just skip around from folder to folder. Furthermore, The price of a new receiver of any kind and a changer would be far more than what I payed for this. (Yes, I got it brand new, retail.) It has great sound quality. It plays back my MP3s perfectly, and I''ve never had it skip. Some people complain about features, but the MP3 decoding is THE feature you want if you buy this player. I don''t need a pause button; that is why they have the volume knob- one little flick of the wrist and no more sound. It plays back regular CDs perfectly. It takes a little time to read a CD-R that isn''t designated "audio", though. And it lets me have long file names on regular non-MP3 cds. However, I do wish it would let me do this on MP3 instead of limiting to 8+3. Also, an option of display colors would be VERY good. It looks great at night but blue would be better. And as someone said earlier changer control would be nice (an MP3-CD changer even better) but most people don''t have that much music. I LOVE IT!!! Similar Products Used: NONE. It''s my first and I won''t be trading it in any time soon. |

Sony CDX-MP450
Strength:
Good power with fine performance. MP3 Playback Very good FM tuner
Weakness:
Slow reading of CDs, and slower of MP3 CDs. No dimmer for display, it''s a little too bright. Red display not my favorite. I had heard some bad things about this unit, mostly from other review sites on the web, so I was kind of hesitant about even trying it out. I made a 400 meg CD of MP3 music files, and a 300 meg CD of talk radio shows for testing purposes. I tried out the Sony and two other H/Us and all three played everything fine. The only difference was how fast the CD was read when inserted, and how fast you could navigate the files on the CD. Other than that, they all played the same on both high (320) and low (128) bit rates. Sound on regular music CD''s is very good, no amp hiss like my last H/U had when playing silent parts of CD''s. The unit only skipped once, period. I hit a pothole at a pretty good speed, and it muted for about a second, not bad, since I have a 4x4 truck with pretty stiff tires on it. My friend has a nearly identical truck and evey H/U he has tried in it (4 or 5) has done it at least once, so no problem there. The controls are easy to figure out, it looks ok (I would rather of had blue) and sounds very nice. The only negative is the MP3 labeling, and I agree with the first reviewer, big deal. The remote works fine, and I am very happy so far. Similar Products Used: Clarion MP3 player, Aiwa MP3, and a Panansonic MP3. |

Sony MP450
Strength:
-Great sound quality. -Good physical appearance of the unit. -Plays all my MP3''s & audio CD''s. -Good search capabilities within the CD. -After you turn it off and back on, it resumes where it left off. -Easy to use interface. -Never skips.
Weakness:
-Filename scrolling, but big whoopee. If you care more about your filenames scrolling than the functionality of the unit, go get an Aiwa and dive into "skip" paradise. This product, IMO, has received way too many bad reviews. The problem with these bad reviews, is they mostly complain about the lack of scrolling filename support. BIG DEAL. Get over it - At least it doesn''t skip all over hell and back like the Aiwa apparently does, and I''ve heard much fewer horror stories about the functionality of it than most other brands. So far, I''ve been more than impressed with this unit. I don''t mind the 8 character filename display (Much better than the numbers that I used to get) and I''ve had zero problems with it so far.
