Strength:
single head unit with a lot of dsp functions onboard first head unit on the market with these features. took alpine and clarion till now to make something similar. Clarion now has the drz9255 and alpine 9815, 9813 and 7998
Weakness:
soundquality & limited x-over points great pro mode features 6 , 12, 24 and 36db/oct..nice BUT very limited only head unit to have dspo features onboard at the time bad sound quality expected it to be up with the odr pioneer equipment....not even close. rather have the clarion 9255 without all the dsp flexibilities |

Display washes out in sunlight Motorized face can be faulty By far, the best head unit ever made! While a bit expensive, buying all of the options separately would be much more expensive. Similar Products Used: None |

2000 Pioneer DEX-P1R
Strength:
I like the built in crossover capabilities! I also enjoy the time-alignment feature especially when using properly positioned speakers (I am only running tweeters/mids and subs). The design of the remote is great.. once you get use to it, you no longer need to take your eyes off the road!!
Weakness:
An equilizer with with a wider band of control would be nice. Also, the motorized face plate is now sticking when folding down, and up. When this happens, the radio doesn't come on, and you have to turn the car off, and ignition back on to reset the faceplates position. I would've preferred a simple spring-loaded faceplate mechanism over the motorized one... as repair costs will certainly be over $125 on an already pricey unit. I've owned the unit for at least two years now, and enjoy the great amount of flexibility it offer. It's a wonderful unit that will grow as your system grows... |

Everything. Everyone should have the chance to hear one of these units
Weakness:
The eq could have more flexiblitly. Like more bands...Im just being picky.. Best head unit I have ever seen, and heard. I has every option need for a competition sound system. I love everything about it. Its auto eq, digital time alignment, 36 dB crossover slope, 13 band eq, Sound fields, Independant preout control GOD too much to name in a small head unit. Every other head unit with close to the same options usually requires an external processor unit which is difficult to mount. Sounds amazing! To buy each component that this unit can do, it would cost over $2000... Similar Products Used: Nothing compares, my second most favorite is my Rockford 8140 because of its 18 volt preouts...pure sound!!! |

Everything one could ever want in a head unit. DFS alarm, SRS, X-Over,EQ,
Weakness:
Could never figure out how to input 100 cd titles (with the 6 cd change) as my previous unit did. Eventhough I no longer have this unit (or the vehicle in which it was installed) I have to admit that I have never come accrossed anything better than this. It was my third Pioneer head unit I've had since '95. Each unit replaced the other one due to better features and performance. Once I discovered The P1R, my search for perfection (or near perfection) was over. since then Pioneer have realeased new organic display units, which in my opinion are very atractive, but when it comes to sound quality and flexibility, P1R still tops!!! features
Weakness:
noisy display, impossible to read in sunlight, ejecting a CD when source is on CD shuts down the deck until a CD is re-inserted or the source button is pressed This unit packs lots of features into a tidy package. The sound quality is good, but not outstanding. I'm using this unit to drive a Soundstream Ref300 and a Soundstream Ref700, and it sends nice clean signals. The time alignment is a nice feature, and sure helps my 12w6's at least sound like they are coming from the front seat area. I think that by far the best feature of this deck is the crossover (although for this price, the crossover points should be infinitely variable). Don't get me wrong, I like this deck alot. I just think that for the price, sound quality should have been the first priority and not just features. Similar Products Used: None |

EVERYTHING!!! This piece rox!! time alignment, high volt preouts, the looks, the remote, you name it it does it!!!
Weakness:
the price tag anyone who can dish out the dou needs one of these i have only skipped it once playing bass so low i couldn't hear anything but stuff rattling around. IT WAS COOL. i was running two xs104dvc's, 1 xs2500, 1 xs4300, a pioneer dex-p1, and a set of pioneer premier's for front end. with this set up i had reached at least 137 db and nothing distorted, popped or made any aukward noise from the deck. by the way this set up was in a 1985 s10 blazer. Strength:
Time Alignment, Ease of Installation, All-in-one singe din unit. No need for anything outboard. Less sub amplifier power needed.
Weakness:
Not able to bypass internal Crossovers in pro-mode. Crossover frequencies are preset and not continuously variable. Cannot be used with rear speakers if there is a compenent set in front in pro-mode. No matter how many watts you have, or however many subs and eq's you can tack on to any other stand-alone head-unit, you can never have the detail, clarity and punch of bass that this unit, when used properly can provide. In my small Saturn, It took about 10 milliseconds longer for the bass from my sub in the trunk to reach my ears than the drivers in the front doors. Not until I had this unit and messed with it enough to align the time in pro-mode did I ever hear a proper frequency distribution in an automobile. This unit was meant to be used with a compenent set up front and two subs in the rear. No other drivers can be used nor are needed. Pioneer kept things simple and three-way. This forces the system to have less crossover points which aids clarity. Pioneer gave this unit some useful preset crossover points, but it would have been nicer to be able to bypass them with external units or to at least be able to use them in increments of 1 hz. To keep the price down, they opted with presets and I can't complain about the sound in my car. The ten millisecond delay was not anticipated and has caused me buy a lot of things to try to help the sound in my vehicle. Ten milliseconds is an eternity in audio and made my trunk sound like it had echo in it. Goodness, at the speed of sound at 1.5' per second this sub would have to be way outside my Saturn to be causing this much delay. With the Dex P1R, I was able to dial in the amount of inches my sub's were away from my ears, but this didn't go far enough. I don't know if my sub amp is slow or if the large mass of a woofer diaphram in a sealed suspension takes some time to do its thing, but without this head-unit, I would not have had a solution for this problem. Everyone needs this head unit. It's the only thing besides more expensive solutions that do the same thing can give you a proper sound in your vehicle period. Concerns about contrast are stupid. If the faceplate is angled up a little, it almost never washes out. Yes, most of its functions are only accesible from the remote. This is okay! It is great to not have to push a button on head unit so many times it begins to wear. The remote is large, and laid out well. I have never used the eq on this thing. There has been no reason. Also, this unit not only replaces many different outboard items, it eliminates many interuptions in the signal path and additional pre-amps or worse re-sampling. Clean as a whistle. The Bottom line is that without time-alignment, you cannot have a proper sound in your vehicle ever. You can't even have solid bass. I paid $799.00 for mine through a local retailer as I enjoy the support that follows. The next best thing to do is to add some vaccuum tubes in the signal path(which I've done). It helps to have good drivers as well, as those sold through Polk Audio and JL Audio(As is my case). Well, I'm not even buying what comes next. I am going to have this unit for many years. The White Album now plays in taste. Is there more to life? Probably not. Similar Products Used: Sony ES cdx 8050. It is not as flexible. |
