Strength:
No Ordinary Button(NOB)
Weakness:
stock speakers in my truck I have only had this deck for about a week now, but I am extremely happy with it. Even with my stock speakers, it sounds great!! (those will be going shortly) I did plently of research and testing of various models from Clarion, Kenwood, Sony, but nothing seemed to compare with the sound quality of the Eclipse. I realize that there are more expensive models of other brands that may compare in sound but I was looking at the $300 range. The NOB makes it easy to use, the interface is friendly, and the expansion possibilties are seemingly endless. I am very happy. |

Strength:
Excellent Sound Quality , Beautiful music reproduction! The best of any unit I listened to. Better than Alpine, Kenwood, Clairon, Sony, Panasonic . No removable face & No Flip down face (YES!). Theft protection system & one year Replacement Policy if stolen. NO SKIPPING - NO CLIPPING as mentioned in other reviews. NOTE: this is a 5441i -2000 model. 3 RCA outs @ 5v (can run 4 speakers channels & a Sub from head unit)
Weakness:
Does not play all CDRs (tested extensively). No pause button. No EQ. Only 11 very clean Watts RMS (not a problem if you run an Amp) I love this unit but it will not play my CDRs. Am trading in for an Alpine (the Apline plays all the CDRs with NO problems). 90% of my music listening will be off CDRs. I did extensive testing of CDRs using 3 diffrent kinds of data CDRs & 4 diffrent kinds of Audio CDRs. Recorded off Mac G4/400, OS9.1, Yamaha 8432S CD burner, Adaptec Toast 4 software. Used the same 17 MP3 conversions on all but 3 of the disks. Burned at 4x & 8x. Found no consistancy on which ones would work and which ones would not. Returned to Earmark with all CDRs & bench tested another Eclpise unit they had in stock and the display Eclipse unit (all 5441i units 2000 model) . Each unit would play different CDRs and not play others...no consistant results. (Thank you Earmark for all your time trouble shooting this problem). Tried CDRs in other units and they worked! Strength:
NOB control, clean design, loud quality sound when it doesn't skip, ESN security.
Weakness:
Skipping, clipping, etc, whatever you call it, I spent $400 plus install for an overpriced player. It went back to the shop many times and to the factory twice. First of all, the custom installers at the shop didn't even connect it correctly. No sound out of left front speaker and then no deck lights. That was two extra trips. Had it sent back to the factory at my expense ($13 shipping) so they could repair it. The shop told me that there were some problems with an entire run of products built during this time period. When it came back three weeks later, nothing had changed. Gave up on it a while because I didn't want to go back to the shop. I made a few calls to the shop and they told me that it was a software problem in the deck. I called Fujitsu Ten and they had never heard that one before. Later went back to the shop when I had time and told them my story. BTW, it was an all new staff at the store! They told me that, yes, there was a problem during that period of time and that Fujitsu Ten is replacing all of the "internals" of any deck that is sent in. I paid another $13 shipping, got my deck back in three weeks and now it works differently than before. No more skipping, but it makes a humming sound that the shop calls "oversampling". I can accept that, but that just tells me that I received a defective item that got past "quality control". Similar Products Used: My brother's four year old Kenwood has many more features that are never used, but it never skips, even when blasting over boulders in the Jeep. |

Strength:
High quality audio, excellent build quality, extremely easy to use, no gimmicks. just pure high quality audio.
Weakness:
The display could be just a bit brighter, but it isn't a problem. An excellent deck! I work in a car audio shop and it is definately my favorite head unit. Have not had any problems from day-1. Sound quality cannot be any better. Would definately purchase another Eclipse over any other brand. As for CD-R playback, have not had ANY problems whatsoever, and about 95% of the CD's I play are CD-R. Similar Products Used: SONY,JVC,PIONEER,CLARION,ALPINE.. u name it. |
