Great sound&power for the year... 40x4. WILL NOT SKIP. i took my car off-roading once (don't ask me why) performance was excellent. installing it would be easy from the wiring guide on the unit.
Weakness:
a-symetrical, i guess... not the "new hotness" look... other than that.... Great product. Overall very good for year. I used it since i had the car and it has been good to me since. made my stock 4" paper cones sound like poly-prop 5's. i realize why alpine is a top seller in the industry |

Clean sound
Weakness:
No sub amps. Scratches to easily Can''t read the screen display in the day time, not dark enough text on the screen. The c.d player had to be taken back after only 1 week, the transisors had burnt. Other than that is is o.k. Clean/crisp sound. Similar Products Used: None Factory radio |

Strength:
Very clean and neutral sound, specially when matched to a good amplifier (two xtant 603x). I like the "black out mode" feature, it turns off all the resources that do not contribute to play music(ie display, bass and treble controls) that way more current is dedicated just to play music, when on black out it does not turn off the BBE feature. It even looks cool when on black out. I dont have any problems playing CDR's and CDRW's that I record at home. I like the fact that it almost never skips, unless I am really pushing it.
Weakness:
No sub pre out It rocks! Similar Products Used: Denon cd player (a bit too brigh, even when flat), other Alpines (best balance between value, quality and features) |

Strength:
Good looking stereo, simple to use, dual color to match with your dashboard, the sound Quality is just one of the best.
Weakness:
The front panel scratch so easy, no subwoofer output, can´t read CD-R, no text scroll function. This is a great mid-level cdstereo, nice features as the blackout, dual illumination, dancing lights, BBE processor and if you dont use an external amplifier it has a decent power. Only thing is that the plastic front cover scratch easily when you dont use the case for the detachable front, not a problem if you dont care about those details. Strength:
The crisp sound and features that gives you a reason not to buy any other unit.
Weakness:
I wish it had just a little more lighting and graphic features. The CDA-7840 can make any $30 speakers sound like a million dollars. The price is awsome, it came with a five year waranty which I don't think I'm going to be using. The unit reads 40x4 but sounds beyond that. This unit will give you crisp sound. I have it hooked up with 4" 60w pioneer speakers, 6x9" 200w Kenwoods, and a 10" MTX sub-woofer hooked up to a MTX Blue Thunder Pro 1502. I don't think I need anything aditional it's a perfect combo. Similar Products Used: I had a sony xplod cdx5000 50x4 but the sub jerked too much making the sound sound like crap. With this unit my sound sounds crisp with a punch! |

Musical sound quality is unbelievable. This deck is designed as a purist's cd player... everything about the deck is engineered to be used by someone who wants musical, clear, and NO HISS from their deck. I know I can't stress the pure, crystal clear musical replication this deck puts out enough. It is a musician's deck. If the Signal to Noise of 110 dB's doesn't tell you anything then go ahead and buy a pioneer with their blazing 94 dB signal to noise ratio.
Weakness:
no sub out but it can be remedied by an external eq with a line driver. The deck is not a big cartoon screen with an animated micky mouse waving at you as he walks by. That could be considered a downfall, i guess... if you're looking for something that spends more time on graphics than sound. It's designed for someone who wants a STEREO NOT A TV SET! A.M. radio reception is weak but I like cd's. I researched the hell out of these things... I owned Clarion, Panasonic, JVC, and Alpine. Mark my words... EVERY other deck out there broke/skipped/hissed and otherwise stank as a cd player... some did better with radio reception, but nothing else played and brought out my cd quality the way this did. I run this deck, MB Quart components in front, Pioneer 4-way 6x9's rear, Rockford 400.4 amp for interiors, a Rockford 360a2 bridged to a single 12" Rockford Dual Voice Coil Sub. (currently all are for sale because my wife has this crazy idea that since she's pregnant, a new baby isn't going to like sitting in the backseat listening to a fat system... whatever. what do women know about systems?) just kidding. e-mail me at fattytca@hotmail.com for details on anything about the system. The sound quality is beyond any other Alpine I've owned and is comparible to high end SONY, thanks to the MDAC.
Weakness:
Haven't found anything wrong with it yet. Back to this display brightness thing. I looked at a 7840 in the store and noticed it seemed a little dim, but that was looking UP at it. Similar Products Used: Several (4) Alpine Decks can't remember the #'s |

No sub Preout This is a very good CDP. I do like the good clean Alpine Sound and think that for it's time it is well, awsome. I wish it had more of the new features but it does Perform. I won't buy another deck until Alpine comes out with MP3 support. I hope they do. I have had no problems with the deck. It does have one of the best sound response of any deck I have heard. MDAC! Strength:
What not too like? BBE, 4v pre-out, dual illumination, M-DAC, cd title memory, an incredible cd section, the list goes on
Weakness:
It won't cook my breakfast or drive the car for me. It could do with a sub-pre out but that's easily fixed by the 4v pre-outs. There is nothing bad about this deck. I paid $295 Canadian for it from A&B Sound. Granted it is a year old (1999 model in Aug. 2000) it was still well worth the deal. It is much much better then any other deck I could have bought for $285. I have nothing to complain about, not even about the brightness during the day. I can see it perfectly. You cannot possibly understand the sound quality difference the BBE chip makes. Even if you are not going to buy this deck go listen to it with a decent set of speakers and you will be blown away. I would recommend it to anyone, especially since you can get it even cheaper now that it is a year old model. Even this years models in it's price range aren't as good. What else to say? BUY THE FREAKING DECK! Similar Products Used: Had a Pioneer tape deck that was in the car a bought...doesn't compare. |
