Model Reviewed: Phoenix Gold XS4600

Strength:

Very powerful amplifier, capable of powering an entire system, or destroy some subs :) Good Sound quality, and even better value. Plus knowing you have a quality product from a name like Phoenix Gold.

Weakness:

Cheap plastic mounting feet that keep breaking. 3V input sensitivity. Not a variable crossover, fixed at 80Hz. Not the greatest looking amp either.

I got this amp used from eBay, at $100US, I thought it was a steal. I was right. Phoenix Gold has always been a great car audio manufacturer. Their ZX and Titanium series amps are known all over the world in the competition circut. The XS amp is nothing much to look at, but when it comes down to power and sound quality, it ranks pretty high in my books. I've owned Xtant and soundstream amps in the past, and the XS4600 is surely a winner when it comes to value. At 4x150 watts RMS, I can say that it puts out its rated power, but I would think it actually goes beyond that. I actually melted the voicecoils on my rockford 2 ways in my front doors with the front two channels on this amp. Perfect for running full ranges, or subs alike. I ran two JBL 12" subs off the rear channels of the amp, and was taking the subs to their limits. I would not want to imagine what it can do if you bridged it to 2 channels and ran two subs off the amp. It is apparently stable at two ohms bridged, but never tried. The amp does not get too hot under normal conditions. The amp if pretty versatile with crossover controls for each pair of channels, and bass boost on both (which works quite good btw). It has a port for remote bass control as well which is cool. Sound quality is quite good also, and can really make a pair of seperates sing. Even though the sensitivity is rated at 3V maximum, My Alpine's 4V outs did not cause any problems.

Strength:

Sounds awesome even if they are hooked up to a pair of sh** rockford subs. Tight bass and crisp highs.

Weakness:

It''s being dragged down by a pair of rockford subs because. Don''t hassle me, i got a cheap deal on them. ;)

The second amp I have ever owned. First i had a QX 4150, and then i got a good deal on my XS4600 (i was kinda pumped up about it) rear channel runs my subs in 2 ohm while the front channel works my speakers. Combined with a Capacitor, this amp has nice crisp bass and the mids to highs just sound heavenly. I leave it to this amp for giving me that "better than bass boys" sounding car stereo, I.E. you can hear things other than muffled bass notes

Strength:

low profile (installed under my front seat), cleanest sound i've heard (except for VERY expensive tube amps), can be a one solution amp

Weakness:

The other review here lists it's weaknesses better than I could. Good job, guy. But I truly don't see any real weaknesses

I used to run my whole car off this one amp (Components + 2 12" subs). It definitely puts out it's rated power and more! it's rated at 75watts x 4 RMS... definitely puts out more. Now i'm on a 2 amp system and it does a fine job running my components and rearfill. It gets very warm, but not too hot.

Strength:

Kick ass all around amp, great PG heritige, looks better than the damn screen shots you keep seeing...

Weakness:

2v input, electronic cross over. (not variable)

This amp looks hella ugly when I look through those screen shots, but when it came in the mail, it had a larger than needed box, great packaging, and it includes the crimp tight wire connectors to use with the hi level input port of the amp. Also included was a black and white manual with a nice looking Phenoix Gold sticker for your pleasure..

The price I got for this amp is $350 which I was happy to pay. The first time I seen this amp, I tought first hand that the screen shots did it no justice, it's a strikingly bueatiful amp despite it's simplicity. Second off, the LED that PG uses are bueatiful as well. After succefull installation, the amp turned on and it was MEGA loud!!! I have the gain set on 2v being the lowest possible, and it is DAMN loud.... With the gains set that low, I have no annoying "hiss" sounds during low volume and in between tracks. Everything advertised about the amp pretty much I can say has lived up to it's potential....

the bads

This amp has very low input being 2v and has one of the weirdest cross overs ever... I was looking for something at LEAST 5v but the one that did that was the 475ti which is a whole wallet away from my budget... As it turns out, it's not such a big bother since I got no altenator whine from my setup anyways. The electronic cross over is a bit whacked tho. You either build your own (not recommened) or buy some inline resistors everytime you wanna change the cross over slope. This left me with the default cross over slope and probably not planning to waste money on a couple of resistors unless I have to. Having a constant variable cross over would be a better way to go if you ask me.

All in all, this has been the BEST 4 ch amp I've ever used and my next perchase will probably be a PPI or the TI from PG....

Model Reviewed: Phoenix Gold XS4600

Strength:

Great sound, totally clean, massive reserves of power, bulletproof.

Weakness:

Sound and performance- no weaknesses. Install with lots of air flow-they do run warm. Older model crossover is a pain. Butt-ugly black box but all the money is in the sound...

The Phoenix XS- amps sound beautiful and put out enormous reserves of power. In a year of operation it has remained immune to noise and has ZERO sonic garbage. This is a workhorse of an amplifier- sounds really clean at all times. It controls cone movement (of Alumapro Alchemy 12) for taut, solid bass at very high levels. The mids and highs are clear, extended and perfectly smooth.
Yeah, the older models' crossover is a pain but the new model is supposed to have a slick variable x-o. Don't make a big case out of preamp voltages-the Phoenix amps are very adjustable and don't load you preamp- they WORK FINE. I have 2 XS4600's in 2 of our cars currently along with an XS2200 and XS2300- all sound great. These amps seem unkillable and are good to buy used. There are units that cost more, look slicker, etc. but nothing plays more solid and clean!
