Interior dated Great truck!!! Not many trucks can go hood deep in water and mud with no problems in stock form. I had the four cyl but I added a turbo from EL-Prototypes and it would smoke a V-6. Similar Products Used: 88 ranger 98 S-10 98 Dakota |

Tacoma DoubleCab V6 Prerunner TRD Limited
Strength:
Looks, power, somewhat 4x4 like performance without the expense and maintenance. Versitility because of the cap I bought.
Weakness:
I would prefer a 5 speed, but they aren't available. The clock is in a terrible place. Why didn't they just put it on the stereo? The truck only gets 16-18 mpg, which isn't much better than a full size V8. The cruise control is awful. I doesn't hold speed going up even small hills at 75mph, because the transmission needs to downshift out of 4th, and the cruise and tranny don't work together very well. The dealer couldn't improve it any. Something about the big tires makes it splash water on the windshield when driving through almost any puddle. It is pretty bad, and makes it hard to drive in the rain on roads that are prone to puddling. Also, the bed should be a little deeper, it is too shallow to hold much without the cap to keep things in. It's about 2/3s the depth of a Ranger. Bought this truck last December, and have loved it for 10k miles. It has had zero defects! The limited package seats are comfortable on trips. It has lots of power, rides nice and has an excellent automatic. I put a shell on it, and now have the best utility vehichle out there. It has more cargo space than a 4runner, the same passenger space, and I don't have to worry about getting the interior bed space dirty, yet it costs THOUSANDS less. I like taking the truck to the beach and throwing all our sandy stuff in the back when we are done. Every once in a while, you just wash out the back. Do that with a 4Runner? I've also carried 16ft pieces of trim, you just stick them through the slider, rest them on the dash and hang them out the back a bit. I bought the TRD package for only one thing, the locking rear differential. I wanted to pull a boat, and thought it would help on slick ramps. The truck is only 2wd, but now looks like a 4x4, which I don't care about. I did take it into the mud once, with a 4x4 standing by to pull me out. It wasn't needed. I got the truck stuck without the lock engaged, then egaged the lock and backed it up out of a mud puddle and uphill! Ended up with mud all over the windows. The lock does help on slick ramps, too. It's too bad I couldn't get the lock without the entire TRD package (dealer couldn't order it that way in TX), as the package contains extras that I didn't need. Well, the truck does look cool, at least. The TRD suspension rides a bit rougher, but I think it helps the truck corner. The Sport Trac has a bit nicer ride, but the Tacoma is pretty good for what it is, which is a REAL truck. Similar Products Used: 92 Ranger, which was incredibly reliable yet way too small and underpowered. Bought it new and had zero troubles for 10 years. Shopped the 02 Sport Trac because of my great Ford experience. The Spo |

Toyota Tacoma 4x4 xtra-cab V6
Strength:
Whole lotta power- I was amazed when comparing the V6 to the 4 cyl. Great looks and seems to be very dependable. Smooth ride and nice shifting. Lots of options and accessories available.
Weakness:
Bad clock placement. A bit pricey, but Daddy always said "you get what you pay for." Don't purchase the reg. cab if you are over six feet tall- you'll be VERY cramped !!! After nearly being exiled from a family of die hard Chevy-buyers, I stood my ground and purchased my Tacoma. All I CAN SAY IS I LOVE MY TRUCK !!! I've only owned it for about two weeks, but so-far-so-good... Similar Products Used: Assorted Chevy's... |

Under-powered w/ a 4 cylinder I am completely sold on Toyota pickups and would recommend the Tacoma to anyone interested in a fun, reliable and tough little truck. I purchased mine brand new in 1995 and now have well over 100,000 miles on it and have never had any problems. Even the brakes are original. Other than tires, batteries and a starter, I have needed no repairs on this truck. Living in Montana and now Spokane,I use the 4 wheel drive on a regularly basis and have never had any problems with it. The 4 cylinder gets decent gas mileage, but is way under powered. My next Tacoma will have a 6 cylinder and an xtra cab. Similar Products Used: 1976 Toyota 2x4 (200,000+ miles on it) Chevy 4x4 |

Tacoma Double Cab, V6
Strength:
Tacoma is consumer reports top-rated small pickup for reliability. In fact, the Tacoma is 'above average' to 'significantly above average' in every area of reliability that they measure. Good power. Good A/C (important with a black vehicle). On-the-fly 4WD. Good balance of passenger room / bed room. I haven't taken off-road yet, so cannot really evaluate that yet. Good dealership experience. Free oil / lube for life. Great looks - a real head turner.
Weakness:
Clock position (not major). Would have liked option of leather interior. I don't really like the hand-pull emergency break (seems like an outdated design). 2002 Double Cab, 4WD, SR5 and TRD packages. Black exterior paint with charcoal interior. Also got matching snug-top shell and 'bed rug.' Overriding consideration for me was quality and reliability. Also wanted capability to haul and still have room for my wife and 2 kids. Since my son is almost adult size, I can't get buy with an xtra-cab, I needed a full double cab. We drive in snow maybe 10 times a year, so wanted the 4wd. Similar Products Used: Ford and Chevy trucks for years growing up. |

Gas mileage (ugly in FWD) Price (although you get what you pay for). I could have bought an S-10 for less and been crying right now. Stiff TRD ride on pavement I could sit here all day listing the pros and cons about any vehicle I have owned. However, it seems to me that the best way to review a vehicle is to say if you are overall satisfied or not. I get the feeling most Tacoma owners are very satisfied. Granted there are different experiences for everyone, but I have found most people to be happy they didn’t spend their hard-earned money on something else. I bought mine new in 98 and have been very happy with it. I used a 92 Mazda 2600i 4X4 for a trade in and I have been much more impressed with my Toyota truck. I also test drove most all of the other small trucks and I just felt the workmanship was a few steps up in the Tacoma. Thus far I have never protested to be a die-hard fan of any particular truck. But in this case and at this point (60,000 miles) I am sold on the Tacoma and would most likely buy a new one in a couple of years. Never got stuck off-roading. Great gas milage. Avg. 23mpg Interior, Chasis, and Drive train held up very well.
Weakness:
Body could have used some improvment. Problem fixed in 1989. This truck was purchased in 1995 w/75000 miles on it ( all hauling wood out of the woods and delivered ). There was not a body panel missing a scratch or dent. The 2.4 EFI ran strong and did the job needed. I often went off roading in all kinds of weather and I didn,t worry about breaking it. I used the truck until 2000 when I gave it to my father to used to go to work. I has roughly 215000 miles on it. Very little repairs done. The body is a different story. Electric door lock on passenger side has grown weak and doesn't always work. 86 Toyota Extra Cab, LB, 22R engine: This was a great truck. Truly one of the ones that help build Toyota's Rep. I traded it in with 398,000 miles and it was still going. Had replaced the alt., radiator, brakes, tires, windshield and thats it. Had the head gasket replaced at 70,000, but Toyota paid for that one. The AC did go out in 99. This was one of the reasons I traded it in. Still miss that little truck, he never failed me. I chose a Ford 150 super cab as my second pickup and have been very happy with it. Would like to think it will get me to the 200,000 mark or at least last me about 10 years. Either way, after reading the reviews, like everything else in life, it seems Toyota has sacrificed some of its quality for profits. So, maybe the Ford wasn't such a bad choice after all. I was once told the 22R motor was the best motor toyota ever made and maybe that was part of it's success. It was also easy to work on. Haven't had to work on the Ford yet and have 48,000 miles. My biggest disapointment was a rumor I heard that you had to completely disassemble the engine to remove two of the rear spark plugs. Just doesn't make sense to build something into the truck that you know will eventually have to be replaced so difficult to change. If anyone has expericence with this, please drop me a line or if you just want to share an old Toyota success story. Heck, I should have been in one of those commercials. HA!
