Tacoma 4x42.7L
Strength:
good all-around performer, period.. Excellent value among a FOREST of choices..
Weakness:
"would be relatively weak as a hardcore work truck (logging, etc), but otherwise.....no weaknesses at all.. Just wish the 'standard'-size bed were a little longer, if anything.. "I purchased my Tacoma 2.7L 4x4 exactly 1 yr ago and I have to say I love this thing---thus far.. (Probably , as soon as I write a review I will have put a hex on it....LOL..) Anyhow, it has performed nicely in the highly inclement weather---wet snow, slush, frezzing rain etc---which we have here in Vermont.. The 2.7 L provides reasonable get-up-and-go (for my purposes), and I like the clearance it possesses w/out having to put in a lift kit.. very nice lines inside and out; makes a lot of domestics look slap-together, i hate to say.. The heater works like a charm, just wish this one had a/c too (!).....I can dream on, or put one in later maybe.. Tilt steering is nice, and the 'overdrive' button gives a little extra measure of control considering this is an automatic (first-ever automatic i have had, and liking it a LOT).. Upgraded the tires to some Michelin All-seasons, which are plenty grippy and much smoother on the road than the (slightly) oversized offroads that it came with .. As a lighter-weight 4x4 for commuting, some offroad and all-round use , I cannot at this time say enough good things about this rig---but I will stop, since babbling on will only subtract from the clarity of it.. " Similar Products Used: owned an '87 Toyota 4x4 (2.1 L?) several yrs back.. did not like it owing to its being underpowered in the relative sense .. Had been previously hammered on, possibly).. |

Strength:
Solid feel, rides allright (yes, its a truck), good looks, acceleration decent when pushing it. Toyota reliability, the heaters a bear, good cooling in summer, overall, I really like this truck, haven't had the opportunity to off road.
Weakness:
Minor points; of course the dash rattles, pushed in foam, has helped. The bucket seats, no lumbar or mid to upper back support, first gear sticks from 1st to second, ass end light, I use four 75 lb sand bags in the winter, helps. Toyota makes a great product, BUT it is so expensive, what American cars come with as standard equipment, toyota charges extra for each and every add on. Bought my toy used, low miles, one owner, driven it over a year now. I've made some upgrades; first had a Leonard topper, nice but cut down on my visibility, switched to a tonnau cover, better gas mileage. Black side step bars, look good, tinted side windows, best upgrade, Michelin XCX-APT's, the increase in ride and decrease in road noise from the OE Wranglers was amazing. |

Great looks, very dependable, No problems in 51000 miles.
Weakness:
I wish toyota would figure out a way to reduce the drag when turning at slow speeds in 4wd. Other than that none that I can think of. Purchased this truck new in August of 1998 and put 51000 miles on it so far without a glitch. Super reliable with the V-6 engine and TRD suspension pkge. Overall very satisfied with this vehicle. Similar Products Used: I had a 1989 4 runner for 9 years and put 162,000 miles on it. That vehicle only broke down 1 time during that whole time. That's why I traded it in for the truck. Strength:
Excellent acceleration when needed (passing slower vehicles uphill).
Weakness:
As with all high profile vehicles, can be squirrely in high winds. A solid, good-looking truck. I have had no problems with it on road or off. Decent gas mileage for a 4x4. Has the spirit of a sports car. |

Strength:
Rock solid reliability. Suprising pep for a four cylinder. Good brakes. Excellent cornering for a truck. Value. Economy.
Weakness:
Under insulated cab makes for noisy highway ride. Front end a bit soft. Flat bench seat (not fair to call this a weakness, after all it is a base model). I bought this truck with 79,000 miles on it. It is the regular cab, 2.4L, with a five speed manual. After putting good tires on it and a K&N air filter, I am very impressed with its performance. If I were to improve upon this truck, I'd add some sound deadening material to the cab, and stiffen up the front suspension. Of course the TRD supercharger kit is mighty appetizing as well. This truck handles much better than I expected it to, which cause me to think that seats with some side bolster support would be pretty nice also. I fully intend to keep this truck until it is thoroughly worn out (then I'll buy another Tacoma). It is a great vehicle to begin with and the addition of relatively inexpensive modifications, I can turn this into one sweet ride. Similar Products Used: 1987 Ford Ranger Sport 1997 Toyota 4Runner |

Tacoma EX cab
Strength:
Excellent power with the supercharger. Excellent off road.
Weakness:
None This is a really great truck. I would highley recommend it over any other compact truck on the market. I have the TRD off road package witch is a must have. It is great off road. I have a TRD Supercharger, gibson exhaust, and TRD air filter which work great together. This is one fast truck. The gas milage is affected only when you have the pedal to the floor of accelerate hard. Other then that it is about the same. At the stop light I am able to beat alot of hondas and other street racers. Similar Products Used: Ford Ranger.....ha,ha |

Strength:
build quality, reliability, gas mileage, on-off road capability, resale value, lively V-6, 50% american parts & final assembled in California, etc....etc....
Weakness:
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm............. This is my 3rd, I repeat 3rd Tacoma! I have owned Dodge, Ford, Chevy and nothing compares to the build quality and reliability of a Toyota. My good friend just turned 400,000 miles on his 86 toyota and has only changed the oil and replaced high mileage parts(brakes, exhaust). I deeply believe in this product and will NEVER own anything else other than a Toyota truck. Again, I tried "American" made trucks, but never had anything but trouble with all of the big 3. And to beat all, toyota tacomas are 50% american parts and assembled in California. But, the most imortand part is the motor and tranny which are Japanese! Thats the other 50%. Also, a cousin of mine worked for the quality control dept. in Ohio and explained how detailed and specific Toyota is about there final product. My 3rd tacoma, which I bought 3 weeks ago, appears flawless once again and I'm sure will last just as long without any worries and high resale value. We all owe it to ourselves to get the best bang for our buck---so why not pay a little more for something that will always love us and take care of us, and when we are ready to say goodbye, will still smile and love the next owner! We all owe it to ourselves to buy a toyota--NOTHING comes close! Good luck. Similar Products Used: 1995 Tacoma, 1998 Tacoma |

X-tra Cab 4 x4
Strength:
Good power for a V6 truck, excellent off-road capabilities. Toyota dependability. Good looks.Solid feel, all-around good quality.
Weakness:
No solid front axle option !! There is absolutely nothing I do not like about this truck.I take it on trail rides in the desert and it is a monster.Small profile gets it into tight spots, good power and 4 wheel drive gets it out. The curb weight is relatively light, so there is also advantages off roading in that respect. A Nissan Frontier ran a red light and T-boned me in my 2001 4x4 x-tra cab and caused me to flip on my side ,sliding into oncoming traffic, it then righted itself and I walked away without a scratch. The truck was a total loss. After living through that I feel very safe in my 2002 x-tra cab 4x4, which I immediately when out and bought without any question or hesitation.
