Strength:
good power, handling, tunes, mods sound good
Weakness:
stupid clock placement, should be under the fuel gauge or between the tach and speedo. rear end hops on a bumpy curve(RR tracks). the trd headers should fit without the cutting and mods that had to be done( small dent in the firewall , cutting in front of the first cat to weld on bracket, excessive time to install by dealer, who told me this is the first one ive done(service writer). (took a day and a half )but in fairness the job was done , as far as i could tell, ok, and looked good . i would like to see the oil filter in a more reachable spot also. good power ,handling, speed, comfortable, have the trd headers and the trd catback exhaust, also have the tornado device installed. adds a lot of power with a good throaty sound and good throttle response. anyone know of problems with the 3.4 v-6 supercharger and the low rev high gear pinging in that will the tensioner solve this problem or do you need to install the 9 lb pulley to pep up the boost( and where do you acquire one of these pulleys?)also, will the tornado device cause a problem if used with the supercharger.i have not yet got a supercharger, but i am researching this whole thing . if anyone knows about this please e mail me at spsniper11@cs.com . overall i love this truck, very minor correctable problems,( clock, header mods) Similar Products Used: 77 toy sr5, 84 toy l/b sr5 |

Tacoma 4x4 Ext. Cab TRD 5-spd
Strength:
Responsive steering, minimal body roll, well-designed interior, great "head-turner" when clean, which isn't often since a lot of time is spent off-road. And the rear differential locker is great. It's gotten me out of several tight spots.
Weakness:
All very minor, but noticeable. Light rear end, jumps on wash-boarded turns. Bucket seats could use improvement. Rattles in dash. Doesn't have doors to access ext. cab, Have to wait until '04 I guess. All around very good truck. Initially wanted ABS, but wasn't offered. After 2 years (52,000 miles), haven't complained about not having them. Added some extras(TRD Cat Back and air filter, brush guard, fog lights, 3" lift, 33" BFG's). Goes great in snow, mud, rocks, and very tolerably quiet on pavement. The ext. cab hinders off-road capabilities some, but most users won't notice. Good acceleration, but there could never be enough. Tacoma 2.7l 5spd. SR5 Ext. cab
Strength:
Reliability and ruggedness if your not a total nitpicker.
Weakness:
The Mexican springs and the apparently non galvanized single exhaust mount near the catalytic. Thats all I've found. If you consider clock placement and a rattle in the dash a "weakness" then you need to increase your dosage. Picked this up used from the dealership in 99 with 15k. Only problem I've ever had was a cracked rear leaf within the leaf pack on the right rear. Granted it was literally -20f without windchill and I dropped off a curb leaving a parking lot. I heard a "ping" sound and thats it. No change in handling or anything. Didn't realize there was a problem till the truck was getting an oil change and up on the lift. It slipped out from in between the group. This was at about 22k miles and was replaced under warranty. Both rear leaf springs are stamped "Made in Mexico" by the way. You draw your own conclusions. I drew it up as flawed foreign steel and extreme temps. Next at 55k miles I ditched the B.S. Wilderness A/T tires that seperated on me and got a set of Michelin LTX A/T's (vast, vast improvement), had the catalytic mount replaced due to rust from more extreme temps, and embarked on a journey through Canada into Alaska past Fairbanks to the Arctic Circle and back. Took over amonth. 10,220 miles total. Not one single problem on the entire trip. Nothing. I added a lumbar support pillow to the seat so I wouldn't be shaped like a question mark after the journey. This truck can handle it and take plenty more. To sum it up before you fall asleep... One faulty spring pack, one exhaust mount which was cheaply replaced, a few brake pads replaced due to Chicago stop and go driving(and to be candid,my friends,I drive like an a$$hole),and all the required oil changes and such.Thats it and I'm at 68k (10K of a gruesome road trip) now and going strong. If you want durability, look to the rising sun. Tacoma PreRunner V6
Strength:
Power... and ride. Quality of the materials used.
Weakness:
No electric mirrors, no remote keyless entry, crappy placement of the clock, gas mileage... ok 16-18. It is really a good truck. The ride is a bit soft for my taste... and the rear leaf springs are made for a GEO Metro. I have 113,000 on the truck and it is going strong. I put the TRD Supercharger on at 26,000 and did have the ping problem. I solved my own problem with several fuel enrichment mods. The tranny went out at 55,000 and I had to fight to have Toyota reaplce it, but the finally did at 72,000. I then had a shift kit put added to the new tranny... no more problems. The root of all the "problems" is the supercharger. 1. It adds GOBS of power.. to the tune of (dyno tested REAR WHEEL on mine) 267hp 2. The suspention (rear) and tranny are NOT ment for this kinda power. 3. The stock fuel system is not designed for the added air the S/C adds. All said and done, it is an excellent choice if you leave it stock or make a few mods like, dual exhaust, headers, Ingen air intake system.. things like that... as soon as you add the TRD Supercharger.... Well... be ready for a host of "things" that "could" happen. I never really had the ping problem, as a matter of fact, I added an aftermarket 9.5psi pulley... and it is working great. The one thing everyone has problems with is the tranny.. the slip will burn up your 1st to 2nd clutch packs, be VERY aware! Similar Products Used: 1990 Toyota 4x4, 1995 Toyota V6 4x4 Extracab. |

Tacoma V6 Xtracab w/ supercharger
Strength:
Great truck. Totally great off-road and for loading up with gear. Also good for city driving, love sitting up so high, but not hogging the road like those gas guzzling SUV's.
Weakness:
Watch out if you plan to get the TRD supercharger, theres a LR/HG (low rev high gear pinging) problem, that becomes worse over time. TRD's fix... a larger pulley that decreases boost...a total cop out. Be ready to put up a fight with TRD if you want the increased power of the supercharger. Watch out if you plan to upgrade your Tacoma with a TRD supercharger!!! Even though the supercharger is covered under the powertrain warranty, it has MANY problems.... I started to get LR/HG (low rev high gear pinging) in almost every gear!!!!! The problem got worse and worse. TRD's fix to the problem was to offer a larger pulley for the blower, decreasing boost by at least 20%... not an adequate fix. I am now in the process of trying to get TRD to admit that there is a problem (they refuse to fess up) and fix it. I am considering having the supercharger removed and having my $3100 refunded, which TRD will do. All that aside I love my truck. It's great off road and have loaded it up for many camping trips and off road adventures. |

Looks & power
Weakness:
What else - the clock. You would figure out by the time they got to the 2003 Toyota would have done something about it Very nice! Good power, ride is ok (better now that I put some weight in the back). I love the Prerunner package. It's a Toyota (like that!) |

Strength:
Overall quality - Good power - is a true SUV - can take it off road and then go dining downtown and feel comfortable doing both - nice stereo - excellent driver visibility in all directions.
Weakness:
Gas Mileage could be better, but is not unreasonable for this type of vehicle. This is an excellent truck - The TRD Off Road package is awesome - mud, rock, and snow capabilities are excellent - The Club Cab has plenty of room - enough room for 5 adults - The V6 and auto transmission match very well - Great looking truck. Tacoma Dbl Cab-Prerunner V6 TRD Limited Pkg
Strength:
It is the TRD products that makes this truck better than it's competition. TRD Supercharger, Air-filter, Cat-back Exhaust and off-road suspention.
Weakness:
Yes!!! Clock placed horribly - I wish it came with a moon roof (which i'm adding next year) - the "ATM", I wish the double cabs came in a manual transmission (i could crank out another 1K of RPM's) I just bought my new Tacoma for my birthday. It is a totally loaded Limited package with roof rack, Step bars, bed extender . . . The works. I had a hard time finding this truck in Impulse Red, but i finally got it. It looks awesome. It handles extremely well for a truck and has lots of power, But to make it even better, i already added a new cat-back exhaust, TRD Supercharger, TRD Air Filter . . . This this thing hauls ass with over 275 HP!!! Similar Products Used: 1990 Toyota Pick-up Xtra Cab. All fully customized also. Still ran like brand new after 135K of miles. BUT it was only a 4 Cyl. I sold it for my new Tacoma for more power. |

The 190-hp V6. Smooth, responsive and has plenty of power. Back seat room is exceptional for a small truck - BIGGER than the Tundra's. Looks!
Weakness:
Front seats are a little uncomfortable compared to the competition. Clock placement sucks! I have only had the truck a week and am VERY satisfied. Yes it has a stiff ride -it IS a truck you know. The radio - average to above average. The engine - the strong point! My kids love the room in the back seat. Even has power windows in the back that roll all the way down. Nicely designed. Great looking. I got the Vibrant Red with Black grill and trim.....awesome! I am averaging 18 MPG so far with only 300 miles. I go through cars (and trucks) pretty fast, but I do believe this baby has all the features to make me happy for quite a while.
