Strength:

Good firm handling characteristics. Reasonable fuel economy for a truck.

Weakness:

VERY harsh ride. Shifting from 1st to 2nd is terrible and nearly impossible during cold weather.

I am the not so proud owner of a 2000 Toyota Tacoma standard cab 4WD truck. Actually, the truck's not bad, but I can't say the same for the 5-speed manual transmission. It shifts terrible! Going from 1st to 2nd gear always produces either slight grind or notch going in. It's worse when cold, and sometimes impossible. Better when the temp is higher or the truck has been driven for about 15 or 20 miles to warm things up. I've found hundreds of identical complaints on this same problem on the internet and lately I've been stopping other Toyota owners I see and asking them about their trannys. Roughly 1 in 4 says they have the exact same problem. I've asked about 100 now and a good 25 say they have the same "notchy" and harsh shifting from 1st to 2nd. The really bad thing is that nobody seems to know what causes it or how to fix it. I have yet to find a single Tacoma owner with this problem that has been able to have it fixed. Even Toyota dealers seem to just duck the question, and suggest that "trucks just shift harshly." Everyone seems to be resigned to just living with the problem.

I have owned Jeep trucks all my life. They shift better than my Toyota and any problems were easily fixed.

Strength:

Good power for a V6. Tires still have 50% tread after almost 4 years. Descent gas mileage.

Weakness:

Street noise comes in to loud even with windows closed. U-turn radius is bad. Seats are not ergonomically correct at all making it uncomfortable on long trips.

I'm the original owner of this vehicle and bought it the year it came out. I have always liked Toyota, but before a year went by, the power steering pump went bad (came out bad from the factory) and then a year later the drive shaft couplings went bad too. They had to replace the entire shaft. Fortunately, the warranty covered both fixes. I have kept up with the scheduled maintenance, even though I change the oil every 3K instead of the 5K - 7.5K the book recommends. I know have 37K miles and no other problems since (knock on wood). In a nutshell, this truck is 100 X better then that last piece of garbage FORD I had before.

Strength:

It just feels rock solid. Though just 4 cyl., it has plenty of pep. Does great in snow and sand.

Weakness:

There's a rattle in the dash that comes and goes, had hoped for better mileage -- getting from 18 to 23 mpg

I bought the 2.7, 4 X 4 xtra cab SR5 in May and have put 25,000 miles on it. I love the truck. I know many folks complain about the seats but mine has been great, a lot more comfortable than the seat I had in my prevous vehicle, a Honda CR-V.

Strength:

nice tight ride with the off road trd pkg.quiet ride.nice stock stereo and cd player.off road and on road driver confidence is quickly appreciated with truck handling characteristics.

Weakness:

the front and back seat comfort is ok for short everyday trips, but for long trips will make you think you have back problems

this is a nice riding truck.corners well and has enough power with the v6 to live with.the stock air filter was replaced with a k&n to help breathe better.no squeaks or body noises as of yet and is holding up well.the big snow storm of presidents day in the east was 27 in.but was a piece of cake for the truck.

Strength:

Pretty snappy V6 engine. After market exhaust helped out with exceleration along with a K&N filter. Good stock suspension and tires (I have 47,000 on the stock tires and they are still in OK shape), decent gas mileage (16.8 mpg average), good factory stereo, shifts very smoothly, handles good for it's ride heighth.

Weakness:

WAY TOO MANY MECHANICAL PROBLEMS FOR A NEW TRUCK!!! Cheap-feeling seats and interior, back seat is all but useless, oil changes are a pain because the skid plates get in the way and you have to be a contortionist to get to the oil filter.

When the truck was first purchased, it had quite a few problems, even though it was purchased new. The fender flares warped in the sun and one fell off, the front stabilizer pulled out of the drivers side front suspension, the rear end went out, it refused to start on cold mornings, it idled rough, the moon roof leaked, and I had the front rotors replaced FOUR TIMES, the rear drums replaced once, and eventually had the ECU (the computer) replaced. The truck still has some rattles and the windsheild leaks, but no more mechanical problems yet. By the way, the truck is rarely off the pavement and is never used for towing anything.

Durability.... it saved my life, I got about 22 mpg on average, i love the design of the tacoma

Weakness:

kinda hard to get your hands in the door map pockets?

I bought this truck with 25K miles on it and put 50K on it in 9 months. Never had a single problem with it until an old man in an RV decided to T-Bone me on Lakeville Highway. The guy slammed DIRECTLY into my drivers side door at about 35mph and I got away with a concussion and a broken clavicle. The thing still ran when I salvaged my personal items from the tow yard. This is a damn tough truck. I now have a V6 Double Cab Prerunner. (Big Brother)

Strength:

Reliable, good V6 engine and good power but 20 more horse could do, handles great in corners, compact design, style. Very good truck! I know it will last a long time.

Weakness:

Cheesy white instrument panel. Extra Cab seats are uncomfortabl but that is to be expected.

Ever since I was in High School(12 years ago), I wanted to buy a Toyota 4x4 Pickup Truck and I finally bought it in August 2002. Since then, it has been a lot of fun to drive and I am very satisfied with my purchase. Two days ago, 24" of snow got dumped on us from the President's Day Snow storm and my truck handled great with the 4x4 on. It went up hills in two feet of snow without any problems and it felt great doing what other cars could not do in that storm.

Doesn't want to start on Cold Mornings. HAve to give the clutch a huge press to get it to crank below 32. One morning wouldn't start at all - later in the day it cranked fine. Otherwise - it's okay. Cheap seats. No frills.
