Strength:

Great looking S10 alternative. One of my favorite things about the Hombre is that practically NOBODY has one. I have all my decals and badges removed and most people think it''s a chevy S10 until they see the nose and then they''re not sure what it is, but they like it. Parts are easy to find since they are GM. Gas mileage is very nice, especially nowadays when gas prices are reaching rediculous highs. Dependablity has been absolutely a non-issue.

Weakness:

Cheap accessory parts. Since I bought my Hombre, the passenger side door lock broke, both passenger and driver side seat reclining levers have snapped off, the wipers have started failing intermitantly and working sparatically, and the rear window latch fell off just recently. I may be forgetting a few things too. I wish they had put as much reliability into the smaller, less vital, details. I never complain about these things, I just fix ''em because I know people who have nice accessories and monthly engine issues.

I bought my Isuzu Hombre XS, 4cyl 2WD, used with 28k miles on it in Orlando, FL in 1999. Since then I have driven from Orlando to LA, LA to Maryland, back and forth from MD to Boston and NY a few times, MD to Denver and back and countless trips to various places (LA to Vegas about 6 times? LA to San Diego about 10 times?) and have never even worried once about a breakdown or major failure. I now have just under 85k miles on my truck and it runs like a champ. All this truck requires is regular maintenance (ie: 3k oil/filter changes, recommended replacements of belts, etc) and you''ll never be left stranded somewhere in some desert between nowhere and death valley. However, I have a few complaints, listed under Weaknesses.

GReat gas mileage!

I honestly believe the truck needs to be recalled! I have had nothing but problems since I bought the vechile and to top it off the airbags in the truck did not go off upon impact head on ! the security system failed in it and my truck would shut off going down the road! Then finally after calling Isuzu they decide to fix the water leak in the front cab, everytime it rained or was washed I recieved a 1in to 2in of water in the floor and because of that the front speakers shorted out and they would not replace them! About the airbag thing 7mph to 14mph for them!

Strength:

Styling. The stock aluminum wheels look great with the body styling. I think the 4 wheel drive was well designed because the truck will climb hills like a goat. Mechanically, the truck is simple to work on. The four wheel disk brakes are a nice touch too. The interior is rugged (and a little sparse) and it wears well.

Weakness:

Fuel economy is on the low side. Parts are hard to find and they are expensive. For instance, $200 for a starter and $400 for a fuel pump (NAPA AUTOPARTS). The quality of origininal materials is low, the body and wiring seems very prone to corrosion. It has been hard to find reliable maintenance and repair information for this vehicle. I think this truck was meant to be a disposable vehicle and I am amazed every day that mine still runs. I have had to replace the exhaust valves because the timing belt slipped and they bent when they struck the pistons. I have had to replace the starter, fuel pump, locking hubs, and exhaust parts. The engine leaks tons of coolant because I think the heads didn''t get torqued right when I put it back together. I have had problems with spark plugs popping out and the engine surges while idling (I think these are common complaints). The bed is falling apart at the back of the truck due to metal fatigue and the truck handles poorly on the highway (It has new shock absorbers and tires , but it may need other suspension parts).

I own a 4X4 model Isuzu truck with the 2.6 liter ITEC fuel injected engine and a 5 speed. For the last 2 years I''''ve commuted 80 miles a day to work with this truck (I''ve broke down twice). The truck takes alot of abuse from commuting and it''s dual role as a farm and camping truck. I have a love/hate relationship with this vehicle. I do all of the maintenace and repairs on it myself and the truck has 160,000 miles on it. Even though I use this truck as a hauler and a daily driver, there are better vehicles available to do the job. The engine is not fuel effiecent or powerful enough to warrant the sacrificing the benifits of a full size pickup. However, like a wart it sort of grows on you and it can be a fun toy. I plan on keeping my vehicle and driving it into the ground because I know it well and it''s paid for. This vehicle would be great for a high schooler or something to tear up driving through the woods.

Strength:

Isuzu and chevy parts compatible. (sometimes)

Weakness:

No power, needs better support from Isuzu on parts and cross-referencing.

I cannot compliment to well on the truck. Nor can I say anything good about the dealer. Though I bought this truck used, within the first month, $600.00 on a new modular fuel pump, $150.00 on towing fees, $150.00 lost time from work $140.00 on an exhaust pipe, $30.00 on a window crank. Within the first year, $75.00 on a battery, $7.40 on light assembly retainers, $140.00 on oxygen sensors, $110.00 on an alternator. Second year, $250.00 on a entire clutch, $250.00 on a transmission rebuild kit, and the list goes on. As a result, since Isuzu doesn''t pay me to advertise for them, nor did they support me, I peeled every sticker off that truck. Now it just looks like a Chevy S-10. Keep in mind, I did all the work myself. After all the parts to replace, I could''nt afford anymore time off missed from work or a mechanics hourly rate.

Strength:

Super low operating costs, reliability.

Weakness:

Cheap small interior, seats only adequate for around town.

I didn't expect such a good ownership experience on just about the cheapest vehicle you could purchase in 1998. I have 55K miles on mine and all I've had to do is put oil and gas in it. (plus a new clutch at 53K) Fuel economy is incredible. I frequently do long road trips and get 29-31 mpg cruising at 75mph. It is VERY reliable and didn't have any hesitations driving several thousand miles into Mexico and Central America. The hightlight: 1100 miles, Mexico City to Austin at 80 mph in 16 hours only stopping for gas!!

Being in pest control I needed an economical truck and one that could carry a heavy load of equipment. Of course I put heavy spring and shocks on to offset this. 65K miles and still running with no problems, change oil every 3K miles is a must.

I am shopping this weekend for a new Isuzu Hombre for my work, this should tell the way I would rate this truck!

Weakness:

Distributer wire problems. Basicly a junk truck. It is not a will built engine. Had heads replace because spark plugs will not stay in. I would not buy another Isuzu pick-up from that time frame. Stay with american built trucks. It has lot of engine problems with it.

A Junk truck!!!!!!!!!!! Is not even road worthy.
