Model Reviewed: Ford Ranger STX 4X4 Supercab 4.0

Strength:

the 4.0 still has plenty of get up and go even though its got 119,000 miles on it. the body is in excellent shape for as old as it is. i've only had to repaint the hood and bedrails because of wear from a bug deflector and cap. everything about the truck is great. the interior is in excellent condition except for a slight sag in the headliner and the arm rest on the console broke off while i was cleaning it out. the speakers are original and with a new CD player headunit they are continually blasting out the tunes.

Weakness:

the only problem ive had withit is that the air conditioning doesnt work. and i read in another review that they had the same problem. also ive been hearign a panging as i pull into my driveway. it only happens when im turnign right and slowing down at the same time.

i think that getting a ranger is extremely worthwhile. for me it was a necessity. i live in pa where snow is common in winter and i also live on a steep hill. the 4X4 was a must. i looked at mustangs but there was no way i was going to be able to go anywhere with it. so i looked a rangers they are a nice little truck for someone who needs a first vehicle. plus it has enough power under the hood to get you out of a jam if you need it. i would recomend this truck to any one.

Strength:

The thing i like about the truck is that it is an extended cab so i can take arround 4 of my friends (as long as their not to big)!!! because of the small back seats. and the 5 speed is really nice too

Weakness:

POWER the truck has none of it is a 2.3 LITRE 4 cylender and sometimes on the freeway depending on where i am going i have to have the car in 3rd gear on the freeway to go up a hill at 35-40 mph it's very imberassing when you get passed up by little honda 4 cylenders and they are looking at you. that is the only and biggest weakness

i would recomend anyone to get a ranger if they wanted something to cart arround town in but YOU HAVE TO GET THE V6 I DONT CARE IF IT 3.0L OR 4.0L JUST ANYTHING MORE THAN A 2.3L 4CYLENDER is has no power i dont know why this is the least powerful 4 cylender anything i have ever ridden in and i dont know why! just get a v6

Model Reviewed: Reg Cab, SB, 2.3L 4 cyl., 5 Spd.

Strength:

Value, reliability, looks, quality, stock stereo, interior fabric.

Weakness:

Lack of power, A/C died after 2-3 years.

I bought this truck brand-new in late 1991 (August '91 build date which seemed late in the production year to me). It now has 102,000 miles and runs like that very first day back in 1991. No joke. The A/C stopped blowing cold back in 1993 or so maybe becuase of the intense use in the AZ desert. Otherwise, the truck just is rock solid. Original brakes, clutch, trans, everything. I've just changed the oil every 3k miles and did the timing belt at 60k and that's it outside of regular maintenenace (belts, hoses). The oil pump went at about 90k miles and had to be replaced to the tune of $800 which was an odd thing to happen to an otherwise perfect engine/drivetrain. It never lost oil pressure entirely but enough to where the hydraulic lifters were clicking. Brake booster was recalled some 8 years after I owned it and a trans seal leaked which was fixed by Ford back in 1995 for about $125. That's it. 23-26 mpg on regular gas and periodic simple maintenance is all she needs for another 100,000 miles. I was (and still am) impressed with the qulaity of the interior on these early 90's models. The seats were real cloth and nice and comfy. You could get a chocie of 3 different colored interiors and all seemed like high-end cloth like the Broncos of the time. Look at new Rangers and it feels CHEAP CHEAP with the thin carpet and nylon seat material. Not good. My '91 is nicer than the '01s and looks more truckish to boot. I would highly recommend the Ranger for reliability and value. You be the judge on the new Rangers and the styling/materials. They can still be had for about $10-$12k in Regular Cab form.

Model Reviewed: Ford Ranger XLT 4x4

Strength:

Small but comfy, looks great, rides nice, easy to get 4- wheel drive in.
Easy on gas.

Weakness:

No power even after a tune up and new fuel injectors.
The 4- wheel drive sticks a lot!
The universals are shot.

I would recommend this truck but make sure you fully check it over. The one I own was not properly taken care of before I bought it and I did a lot of repairing and I really do love my truck the only problem I have right now is the 4x4 is sticking and I don't know why yet. But if you want a small but roomy truck I would recommend the Ranger. They are very dependable and comfortable. With any vehicle you just have to keep up the maintence and they'll keep going for you, I just happened to have gotten an abused truck. After the care I put into it it runs like a gem. And as long as I keep the care going I expect it to last a very long time. And my next vehicle will also be a Ford Ranger Extended Cab.

Model Reviewed: 4x2 Super Cab 3.0 V-6

Strength:

good gas mileage (for a V-6), fun to drive, durable, reliable, can pull a trailer decently when it has to

Weakness:

it could use more acceleration power (of course, then there goes the great mileage!); watch the front-end alignment and put a good stiff set of shock on it pronto-the stock shocks are flimsy

This Ranger is 9 1/2 years old, I am the original owner. I presently have 167,000 miles on this truck and other than tires, batteries, hoses, brakes, these have been my only problems:

1) the A/C went out at 89,000 miles (its Texas...the a/c runs 8 months a year!)

2) the U-joints need replacing at 128,000 miles (remember-I pulled some trailers)

3) the top radiator hose leaked at 132,000 miles

4) the oxygen sensor went out at 155,000 miles

THATS IT!

Sounds pretty reliable? You bet! This little truck just keeps on going. I have the original clutch, alternator, water pump and other parts that I replaced on the Chevy well before 100,000 miles.

The paint is still in great shape, considering for the first 5 years I owned it, the truck never was garaged and saw searing Texas summer heat. When I back it out of the garage, there are NO spots on my garage floor...it does not leak a thing!

I know several people that own Rangers and they all have similar stories. We love our Rangers! A few have gone well over 200,000 miles on the original, unopened engine. Its a great truck for a great price, when compared to the pricey Toyotas and Nissans.

I was planning on selling this truck this year and buying a new pick-up, but have come to the conclusion that i am going to keep this Ranger and just buy a small beater-car to commute in and use the truck for weekend haulings and hunting. Why get rid of a vehicle that there is NOTHING wrong with?

Check out the Ranger...they're really nice trucks!

Model Reviewed: XLT Sport Flareside

Strength:

Fun to drive. Handles well, especially for a truck (out-corners many cars). It isn't an S-10. Has decent go power. 3.0 with a stick shift can really make the tires spin. Bright red flareside sure turns heads (especially jealous S-10 drivers). The police speed traps never expect to see a truck gunning past them.

Weakness:

Exhaust rattles at about 4000 RPM. Power band is odd - floor it in first; tires spin and the truck kinda chugs off; pass through 3500 RPM and you swear the afterburners just kicked in as it turns into a 3100lb rocket. A little tail-happy. Rear brakes (never liked drums, or ABS).

First vehicle, and absolutely love it. Paid a little over $13000 after tax, title and license; not bad for a truck whose sticker read almost $17k. Much better truck for the money than a Chevy S-10. Definately get the HD payload package if you drive hard (really thick front swaybar, and it's solid steel, plus larger rear brakes). The 3.0 and 5-spd give it very good performance that will keep the ricers on their toes. With stuff in the bed, the truck can still go.
I gave this truck 5 stars because it definately deserves them. It may seem like I found a lot of weaknesses with my truck, but they are all minor.
Good truck for just about anyone, although flareside bed and sport package will probably appeal more to the younger crowds. And parents, don't let junior get ahold of a 6-cylinder.

Model Reviewed: Splash 2.3L 5-speed Reg Cab 2wd

Strength:

Strong Engine, not HP, but it will last through anything. Great MPG! And the wonderful look of a Splash! Will handle any turn with ease. I havent had ONE problem with it yet, and it has over 80K!

Weakness:

Not winning any points in the HP battle. Not a whole lot of room. Not good in snow (2wd).

I would highley reccomend it to anybody that is looking for a mid-size truck. This ranger handles anything. Don't get 2wd for areas with bad winter conditions, get 4wd. The looks of a splash are one of a kind. Don't buy this truck if you are looking with something with a lot of storage room, or passenger room. It is a challange to put a stereo system in a regular cab, but it CAN be done.

Similar Products Used:

I've driven other trucks, and I must say that the splash handles the best out of all. Yes, the 2.3l is underpowered, but it can go.
