Ranger XLT 4X2 V6 Supercab
Strength:
Good Strong truck. I've had to make no repairs on it so far and with 115,000 miles, that scores high on my list. It looks great and the V6 runs smooth with an average 21 MPG. My friends all think it's cool-looking and I'm extremely happy with the way it handles and drives.
Weakness:
Could use more power. Even for a V6, it doesn't have a lot of get-up. I also find myself shifting a lot quicker at lower speeds than most other cars (gear ratio). Overall, I will be replacing a lot of things (such as the clutch, shocks, and so forth) only because i expect to get over 250,000 miles out of my Ranger. I could have used a 4x4, but I'm not sure I'de want to sacrifice the gas mileage. Great looking truck and very affordable...however...do not buy from the Roseville Automall...I got raked. I paid 10 grand for a 1995 Ranger with 115,000 miles on it. Maybe it's because I was a dumb 19 year-old. But expecting faults with this truck has cleared my mind thankfully. Similar Products Used: Compared to the Toyota truck, the Ranger is by far the most comfortable truck. I love it's luxurious interior! |

Strength:
I bought the truck from my company for $1000, and despite the abuse it's been through (it was a service vehicle), and the 200,000 miles on it (yep, you read right) everything other than the normal wear & tear items have held up. The interior is comfortable. The gas mileage is good and it drives great. The new shocks and tires (only things I've had to replace) make it ride just like my fiancee's explorer Sport and that's good enough for me...... for 1000 bucks!!
Weakness:
No balls under the hood. I thought something was wrong at first, and I was right....it needs a V6. The 4 cyl. is great for mileage, but add a passenger and you're lucky to go 55 on the hwy,....with a tailwind, add anything in the bed and you could push it faster than you could drive it. So far I'm very pleased with my purchase. Now if the tranny clunks out and the motor blows, that'll change real quickly, but thanks to research, I don't foresee that happening. I bought it for a reliable work truck and that's what I think I got....Reliable. I plan to get another 200K out of her. Similar Products Used: To the S-10, 100% better. Ranger XLT 4 Cyl. 5 Speed Manual
Strength:
-Great Gas Mileage always around 23mpg
Weakness:
-One MAJOR weakness. No power! Engine only has 112HP. It's ok for normal driving but I do a lot of freeway and country road driving and it has NO passing power, even if you drop a gear it still doesn't help much. But I must say, I left it in 4th gear for a while and floored it and eventually got up to 87MPH. This was the first truck I ever drove. At first I complained how it handled because all I had ever driven was sporty cars. But after I drove other trucks like GMC's I changed my mind. Yes it handles like a truck but it one of the best handling trucks out there. The ride nice and firm with good control but not so bouncy that you can't stand it. The transmission is one of the best, gears switch easily and smoothly. I can roll at a slower speed in first gear then my friends Acura Integra so it minimizes clutch usage. The interior is nice, everything is in place and easily visible, I like my nice big tachometer. Comfy seats, makes those long drives I take a breeze even in a pickup. The 4 cylinder I have is a little under powered, but I get great gas mileage. I would recommend the 4 cyl. for those who are just driving and hauling stuff in the back once in a while who don't care having people pass them all the time. I would go with the 6 cyl. only if you wanted more power for passing and towing otherwise all it does is suck more gas. This is a great truck for those who need the gas mileage of a car, handling like no other pickup, and the most bullet proof engine out there. Similar Products Used: Almost every other truck brand except Toyota, but I do have a friend who just traded his Toyota for a Ranger like mine so that says a lot. |

/ Ranger XLT Off Road Pkg. 3.0 V-6
Strength:
This is a great looking truck that handles very well, and for being a standard cab has alot of room behind the seats.
Weakness:
Problems with the clutch, brakes, gas mileage sucks, and poorly built. This is a great looking truck that is very comfortable on a long ride, but now the warranty has expired, I'm getting rid of it. Since the truck was new, the clutch makes a weird noise the first couple of miles. I brought it back to the dealer and they replaced the throw-out bearing. That lasted about 6,000 miles and it went again. I brought it back and they "fixed it". Now, when its cold out the noise comes back. The e-brake freezes overnight. Even on days that the temp is over 80 degrees! The serpentine belt needed to be replaced at 25,000 miles. Every week there is something new crapping out on it. Now the rear breaks are starting to "grab" on cold, damp mornings. If you are going to get a Ranger don't think about any engine except the 4.0L. This truck is a pig. On a hill, it loses power right away. The list goes on. This truck had to be started on a Friday afternoon and finshed on Monday morning. Similar Products Used: 1992 Chevy 1500 much better truck. |

Ford Ranger EDGE Supercab
Strength:
This is the most agressive and most beautiful truck I've ever seen. The bright red clearcoat shines and brings out the flareside. The color keyed bumper and front fog lights attract looks. I've had thousands of comments on this beauty. The 3.0L V6 has descent power, considering it'll smoke a new Jeep Cherokee w/ a 4.0 and a Montereo Sport with the 165 hp 3.0. The factory lifted 4x4 suspension is excellent and the truck has no problems off-road with the limited slip rear. Even though it is a 4x2, the Ranger EDGE can take some mud without getting stuck. The new headlamps and impressive wheels are head-turners. The optional 6-DISC in-dash CD changer really basses out and has excellent sound. It even outperforms my dad's 2001 Explorer Sport's factory Pioneer. I've put in a Rhino liner and it looks great.
Weakness:
Well, first of all, the 3.0L has some power, but it's nothing compared to the new SOHC 4.0L. The excessive noise of the engine when it starts is a problem, too. When I start the truck, it revs up to 1500 RPM, and when I stomped on the gas, it went close to 5000 RPM. Also, the lifted suspension is great, but the non-gas pressurized shocks have already started squeaking. The gas mileage of the 3.0L is terrible. I don't even over-accelerate often, but the little 150hp just eats the gas. I have a problem with my gas guage not registering properly. When the truck is about at 7 gallons left in the tank, the guage registers empty. I took it into the ford dealer and the found nothing. This truck is a must have. People think its a fully loaded 4x4 and the new-age lights and fog lights are great. The wash-out rubber flooring is awesome and I think it makes my stereo sound louder. The 15" alloys are nice fitted with aggressive Wilderness AT's, although I plan to upgrade to the 16" 4x4 wheels with 245 BFG Mud Terrains. There are already lift kits available and many performance upgrades, too. Ford's reliability is excellent and my family is all ford, Expedition Eddie Bauer 4x4, Explorer Sport 4x4. The stereo is pumpin and the engine is alright. The looks get the chics and the 40/60 is great if the chics want to slide over... Similar Products Used: It will knock the pants off of the 2000 S-10 I was looking at. Chevy still hasn't captured the right styling or power. It has tons more features, power windows, locks, miorrors, 6-DISC, limited-slip, V6, Automatic, than any comparably priced competitors. |

Strength:
This is a cheap to maintain, fairly trouble free, sturdy truck. I can use it to pull trailers and haul but it is reliable enough I can drive it out of town. The price was low, and I have not had much toruble with it.
Weakness:
The dome light that has a mind of its own. Sometimes it goes off right when you shut the door, sometimes a minute or two after, but sometimes not until the battery saver shuts it off. This isn't so bad if you're not driving at night. I took this in once under warranty and they fixed it temporarily but I don't think they really know how to fix it. Now that the truck is out of warranty, I am not worrying about it. I'm not really crazy about the Overdrive switch that has to be turned off every time you start the engine. It's easy to forget when towing the trailer. That's the only place I like my GMC Jimmy better, you can simply shift into whatever gear you want. The gas mileage is only decent for the engine. I bought this truck used in June 1998 because of the low price ($8990). It only had 9000 miles. It is equipped with the 2.3 119 hp four and an automatic transmission which has decent power. I would rather have a V-6 but I couldn't turn down the low price. I can pull my trailer with two riding mowers on it though. I looked at Nissans, Dodge Dakotas, and S10/Sonoma before I purchased this and I am satisfied. I think people looking for a low cost truck should try one of these. Similar Products Used: 1991 Chevrolet S10- The Ranger wins hands down. From the time I bought the S10 (new) until I sold it, there was always some little thing going wrong. |

This truck is great. It is comfortable, quiet, LOOKS GREAT!! It has all the bells and whistles. Great in the mud, snow and rain. You feel safe driving in all conditions. Yhe shift-on-the-fly four wheel drive works like a charm no clunks or wierd noises. Smooth ride all the around!!
Weakness:
I thought it was a little exspensive for a mid-sized truck but I have no regrets! Well only one I guess there is no lift kits avalible anywhere for this truck!!! If anyone knows of one e-mail me! This is a great mid sized truck for anyone in the market. Like I said it was a little exspensive but there is a pretty broad range in prices with these new rangers...For some one who needs the power to tow a boat or other trailer this might not be the truck for you it does lack a bit of power in that area. But off-road the power is perfect!(4.0L) Similar Products Used: 98 4x4 ranger xl |

Ford Ranger
Strength:
--Fairly sturdy for a small truck
Weakness:
--Gas mileage is terrible with the 2.3 liter four cylinder--a common problem that Ford is aware of but prefers not to address. It dates back to the early 1980 model Ford Rangers with the 2.3 liter engine. Generally the gas mileage is in the 18-20 mpg range--poor for a truck this size. This is the first item listed under the Technical Service Bulletins (Gas mileage--Owner expectations versus actual.). --The dealership and service departments of Ford are unsatisfactory and so are the design defects identified above. I think the fixes to all the problems would be relatively easy but they don't seem to want to fix them and I find this to be the rule rather than the exception. 2.3 4 Cyl has good power for such small engine... Solid truck ride
Weakness:
NO Cup Holders, No Tachometer, Sloppy 5-speed manual, Wimpy Firestone F570 tires, Gas guzzler, Terrible A/C settings, Terrible radio, R E A R B R E A K S lock terribly even with ABS. I use this truck as my work truck everyday, now that I am replacing it with a 2000 Ranger I am beginning to realize how sucky the truck I drove was... The only thing I thought was decent about it was the 2.3 4 Cyl engine, it hauls and makes me smoke my tires once in a while... The breaks though, are terrible, and even with NO ABS lock at the slightest stop, the transmission, even though sloppy has a good RPM/Speed ratio, being at a decent RPM rate at 100 MPH. Without the chip, you can get it up to about 115 MPH, but it vibrates like heck and with those tires, you should NOT attempt to do it. It's a good get up and go transportation measure, but, if you can afford a more decent car, please get a more decent car.
