Ford Ranger XL
Strength:
decent mileage on highway,appearance
Weakness:
lousy city mileage, gutless 2.3L combined with Auto tranny, high maintenance costs, expensive and mediocre Ford service, mysterious electrical problems (warning lights turn on/off while on long highway trips, intermittent wipers don't always work or stay at same speed, Daytime Running Lights sometimes don't come on), terrible quality replacement parts (Ford body panel primer peeled away after 6 months), premature rusting on bottom of box, Ford dealer used balance weights on alluminum rims that caused the clearcoat on the rims to discolour and peel, etc. etc. I bought it secondhand from a light-use owner (46,000 km/28k miles). It's an okay truck, but it's gutless, gets terrible city mileage, and the standard cab has NO room in it if you want to carry another person along. A K&N air filter does help the acceleration a bit. I haven't been very impressed with the build quality or performance, or with the dealer servicing (have since gone elsewhere). It just seems to have a lot of little problems that I haven't encountered with the many Japanese cars, etc. we've had over the years ('95 Honda Civic, '95 Acura Integra, '89 Toyota, etc.) I don't plan to buy another Ford truck, given what I've experienced here. Nice Style, Ride Height, Coin holder in armrest (seriously one of my favorites), Easy Cleanup Interior, Decent Sound System
Weakness:
3.0l is a little anemic when it comes to acceleration Hmm... where do I start? Ok, half an hour off the lot, my stereo stops functioning. I should have taken this as a harbinger of things to come. I took it back to the dealer and was told that I'd need to leave it for 4-6 hours to diagnose the problem. This problem was eventually fixed (a wiring harness had shaken loose). Two weeks later, my gas guage stops reading the correct amount of fuel in my 19.5 gallon tank. Once again I took it back to the dealership. I won't bore you with the details except to say that I'm in my fourth month of ownership and it still hasn't been fixed. In it's first 3 months it has been back to the dealer 6 times all to no avail. Suprisingly enough it seems about every 2 weeks a new problem appears. Some of these problems I believe are realated to the poor repairs done at the dealership. Including a powerless utility powerpoint, rattle behind the dash and dragging calipers. Hopefully no more problems appear. When I complained about the extraordnary amount of problems with a brand new truck, the simply told me "That's why we have a warranty!" I really should've listened when friends told me it'll be a Fix Or Repair Daily! Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Very reliable and tough on the worst roads. I lived in the rockies for about four months and my ranger overcame the worst inclines and rocks
Weakness:
very weak 2.3. Embarracing on uphill highways. Not great on icy roads unless you buy a quality aftermarket tire. I would encourage anyone to buy a ranger for reliability and easy maintainance. Gas milage on the 2.3 is good on the highway, but lousy in the city. Similar Products Used: None |

extended cab
Strength:
Perfect for me. I'm a student I stick my books, bags, and instruments in the extended cab. It has been a very dependable. I have gone long distances, short distances, and off road, and in many weather conditions.
Weakness:
There is one thing that has been problem some, at times the dome light will not turn off and the door ajar light is on and their is a continues dinging which can become very inouing. I have been told that the '95 Rangers have electrical problems. This is the only problem I have had. This truck has been very dependable it hasn't left me stranded. I have had to replace the rear brakes recently but that about it. It has been on some long trips, to Canada, Mt. Rainer, Oregon and it has done well. I am happy with it even though some times I am inoued by the dinging from the faulty door ajar sensor. Similar Products Used: None |

Rack and Pinion steering with IFS gives great handling
Weakness:
Cuts out at 100 mph... Guzzles fuel around town, best 20.1mpg at 65 on highway. worst 11.2 mpg overaccelerating and hills. Emergency brake freezes frequently. Factory stereo sucked, that had to go. I bought this truck with 92,000 miles from my dad (now 96,000) where he bought a new 2000 Ranger. Don't tow much, but I did pull out a loaded F550 2x4 farm truck up to the axles in mud, very impressive. Smoked a V8 1500, and a 2000 4.0 4runner no problem. Lots of power in the 4.0 V6. Rack and pinion steering gives strong responsive handling, almost no body roll either. Great in the snow and and will keep up mudding with friend's 36" tire '84 Blazer. Got stuck with significant brake problems related to emergency brake sticking while dad had it... fixed myself with no problems now. I recommend this truck for anyone who occasionally tows, lives in a snowy area and likes performance. Weakness:
THE 3.0L ENGINE NEEDS TO BE TWEEKED A LITTLE AND THE TRANS. NEEDS A LITTLE BEEFING TOO.I'VE TOOK MINE TO THE DEALERSHIP AT LEAST 13 TIMES IN THE YEAR I'VE HAD IT. I LIKED THE TRUCK WHEN I FIRST PURCHASED IT AND SO DID EVERYONE THAT SEEN IT, BUT AS THE MILES PROGRESSED, WHICH IT HAS NOW 29000 ON IT, IT'S BEEN NOTHING BUT TROUBLE, MY DEALERSHIP EVEN WON'T GIVE ME MORE THAN $8,800 FOR IT AND IT IS IN MINT CONDITION.WHAT A RIP OFF THIS TRUCK WAS TO ME.I'M READY TO GIVE IT TO SOMEONE WHO COULD APPRECIATE IT BETTER. Similar Products Used: I HAD AN F-150 BEFORE THIS TRUCK AND I'M GOING TO GET ANOTHER TOMORROW.IT STILL LOOKS BETTER THAN ANY DODGE OR CHEVY THOUGH. |
