Strength:
Looks, ride, comfort, dual media stereo (cd & tape), on-the-fly 4wd, good power and acceleration, 4-door super cab, 5 speed automatic (yes, it is auto), cold AC
Weakness:
Needs 4.0 SOHC option, fuel milage could be better I got mine with every option (with the exception of tube steps and stepside bed, didn't want either of them) and the price came out to be about $23,500 (with tax title & license). After having the 4 door option for the SuperCab, I cannot imagine a truck without it. It makes getting stuff and people alot easier, especially for a compact size truck. The 4wd engages and disengages smoothly without any clunking, or any sound at all, for that matter. All of the controls are with in easy reach with very good placement. Optional 4.10 gears in the rearend offer good power and acceleration. I have been nothing but satisfied with my truck. I cannot comment on warranty service as I have not needed it. An excellent truck for the value. Similar Products Used: '90 Bronco II (Ranger based) |

Ranger XLT Super Cab V6 3.0
Strength:
15' Tires, comfortable seats, CD sound system, good AC, decent acceleration for a V6 3.0, nice all-chrome front end.
Weakness:
Engine could use more power! I paid about 18k for the Supercab with XLT options including Teflon treatment and an extended warranty. About the same price for a Dodge Dakota regular cab with hardly any options. The only advantage the Dakota has is a stronger V6 engine. Ford Ranger Supercab STX
Strength:
Engine, handling, ride, stereo, tough as nails, excellent fit and finish
Weakness:
Transmission is possibly the worst product ever produced, in any category. $16,800 out the door for a fully-loaded 2WD pickup. Have put 245,000 miles on it in less than seven years. Motor runs like it was just taken out of the crate. Carves corners better than many sports cars. Built like a tank, has taken every last bit of abuse I have dished out. Similar Products Used: Previous vehicle was a 1989 Toyota Xtracab. Doesn't even touch the Ranger. Also have driven '99 Dodge Dakota, late model Toyota Tacomas. |

XLT 2x4
Strength:
I bought it new in 1992, and after 156,000 mi, and 8 years of service, it has been a wonderful truck. My little ranger could quite possibly be the best made, longest lasting vehicle on the road....bar none (and that includes ANYTHING made by Toyota or Honda; and GM dosn't even get considered). Tires lasted 113K, New plugs at 85K (but it didn't need em); at 140K, it finally missed (needed a new distributor cap and rotor); it has plenty of power to pull my boat or my trailor full of equipment; gets about 24 mpg; is comfortable; and looked really good before it got rear-ended..sniff. There just has not been a better vehicle made by the hands of men!!!!
Weakness:
Absolutely NONE!!!! I am not going to be like alot of folks and say that other small trucks suck and that no other truck is worth buying, but the Ford Ranger is about as dependable a vehicle there is. It is a small pickup truck...not a Camaro (so no it dosn't run a 10.0 quartermile), not a luxury car (so no the ride is not like a Lincoln or Cadillac); and it's not a one-ton (so no, you cant pull a 2-story building down with it). But it's ride was better than my Chevy Cavalier, it was the peppiest V6 available at the time, and it had plenty of pulling power for what it was designed for. There is one thing it can claim, IT IS ONE TOUGH LITTLE TRUCK!!!! And, it is well worth the money that you pay for one. I highly recommend that you test drive, and consider a Ford Ranger if your buying a small pickup. Unless you get a lemon (which exists for all makes of trucks) you will be happy with a Ranger. On the rating skale the highest mark is 5*....I give the Ranger at least 7*s. Similar Products Used: When I bought my Ranger, I test drove every small pickup on the market. Nothing came close!! |

Ford Ranger Supercab XLT
Strength:
Very reliable, A/C works damn good...
Weakness:
If it is ever wrecked in the front at speeds more than 35 m.p.h. be sure to check motor mounts from my experience with several of these trucks this is what happens. Although a broken motor mount may not be noticeable until well after the truck is out of the body shop and back on the road. One of my major problems with the 4 cycl. model is the lack of power. But it does look very nice sitting in the front meadow. I paid 10,400.00 in late 1992. As far as recommending it. It is a good vehicle for the price but don't expect to make it move to quick if you need it to. Especially if you are towing small trailer loads of cow manure. I think for my needs and wants The next ford truck will be the crew cab ford f150, or f250. At least the A/C will still be better than G.M. vehicles and so will the power of these larger trucks. Similar Products Used: I had a 1991 ford ranger which seemed to posses more power than this 1993 model.Several trucks that I had before my 93 ranger was 1964,65,66,68,74 ford f-100...GMC 68 long wheel base,Some of the other cars are as follows Datsun 78,70 convertable bonniville,70 firebird,68 firebird, 92 thunderbird,66 nova,64 fairlane. |

Strength:
Great when pulling a trailer. it should be used to it .it was a state truck.
Weakness:
valves rattle with cheap gas. It is a great first truck for me and it has 140,000 miles on it and it stills runs like brand new.I put 15" rims on it and it has been repainted white and the windows are dark. Similar Products Used: chevy is tougher |

Ranger XLT
Strength:
It is blue sterio is good.
Weakness:
Has not been the worst vehicle I've ever had but lots of little things and a few not so little things. Way under powered no zip no sing, GET the V6. The ranger emblem on the front fender fell off, the 5 speed knob came off, the ignition switch fell off (can use but is a hassel), replaced the tires already (40,000), seating material always looks dirty and looked worn after just 1 year use. One of the most anoying things was the dinger (you left your front door open) would start dining and would not stop. Twice it went on for over a day (only on the weekends), and just before getting to the ford dealer on Monday it would stop. They kept saying I had to come back when it was making the noise. Went to another dealer for another problem and when I mentioned to this dealer the other problem. They indicated that this was a known problem and they fixed (and it stayed fixed) with the ranger and they could fix it immediately. My interior lights wouldn't go out, had to remove the light bulb to get it to go out. Enough little stuff had to replace the clutch and have transmission work done $800+. The condenser and a hose had to be replaced on the ac and cost $1200+. All in all I am not totaly against the vehicle just had lots of little things I've mostly just put up with. Ford is crappy with the trim/details. I won't buy another Ranger but will probably buy another Ford as I have had overall good luck with them (see my tarus review) and have really liked all my F150's. Similar Products Used: Ford full size trucks, similarities: they both have empty spaces behind you. Differences: f150's are real trucks the Ranger's are more like a toy. |

Great Power, good stock stereo, lasts through accidents!!
Weakness:
Bad gas mileage, small electrical problem in May 2001, tires go fast with power like this! Overall, it has been a great truck, with excellent acceleration, and with plenty of towing power. The 4.0L sucks alot of gas, but it is definately worth the acceleration! Similar Products Used: Better looking, longer lasting, and better on gas than the S10 |

XLT Off-Road 4X4 4.0l SOHC
Strength:
Too many too list! Awsome Acceleration. Even at 80 mph you step on it and it jumps. I have to be careful nailing it from low speeds because it will absolutely ROAST the tires. Tight, not a single rattle, responsive handeling. Corners better than some "sports cars" I have driven and its a 4WD. Stereo is great, four doors are awsome. Looks absolutely stunning.
Weakness:
Worst quality was no 5-speed option with a loaded Off-Road package truck. But the 5-speed auto is impressive. No power loss through shifts, at first I thought it was slushy feeling but I have since realized its not slushy, it just doesn't let up on power through the shift. If you want a compact pickup this is the one. Opt for the 4.0 L SOHC (207 hp), you won't regret it. The only options I did not get was the 6-disc cd-changer and the ford nerf bars. (I thought the ford "step bars" were kinda wimpy looking) Similar Products Used: I test drove every other compact pick-up on the road and their is no comparison. Its the most powerful, tightest feeling, best looking, most comfortable compact truck on the road. It replaced my 89 Ranger 4x4. No comparsion |

Ranger XL 4x4
Strength:
Looks good, interior is alwright (been changed from custom to XL),handles damn good for a 4-wheel drive (stock lift). I've never had any engine problems, just a few electrical kinks that needed to be worked out.
Weakness:
Well, it has a 2.3L FI in it, so it's pretty weak, so bout like the other guy said, far as towing, it can't handle anything bigger than a jon boat. It's top speed is about 60, 70 if you really push it. It's a good compact pickup, chevy and dodge can't touch it. The 4-wheel drive makes up for being so weak, You put it in 4-Low, the power is unlimited, I've pulled out a Chevy Z71, (two of'em actually), a F-150 and a F-250, they we're all 4x4's hahahaha, overall, the truck is 16 years old, engine is tight, body in good shape. I don't know about the new Ranger 4x4's, I guess they would match up about the same. Similar Products Used: 71 F-100, well, the Ranger does get better gas mileage (hehe). |
