Strength:
Tough durable bedliner, excellant heating and air, good ground clearance, strong brakes, most comfortable seats in any small truck that Ive ever ridden in( especially on long trips). Especially liked the sporty stepside look
Weakness:
Where do I start? This truck had horrible gas mileage. The lack of power it displayed was the butt of jokes amongst all of my family. There was no room inside, but that didnt matter because most of the time you werent inside it (mostly you were under it or beside it watching it get repaired). Within 100,000 miles I had to replace or fix ; the master cylinder and brake lines, the transmission, clutch assembly, slave cylinder, heater core, several hoses, radiator, fan clutch, brakes(at 30k), fuel pump, head gasket. It used a quart of oil every 1500k(dependably). The cruise control would'nt work in cold weather. the right window sometimes would stick either in the up or down position( great for when it rained). The rear window latch was shabby( it made for easy prey for a theif one night). The key could come out of the ignition and the truck would still run. You didnt even need the key to start the ignition. It had a lot of body roll around curves( more so than any other small truck ive been in). Poor handling. It seemed to go through tires kinda fast. It was so incredibly hard to get to the oil filter( I almost thought it was a foreign made vehicle), For the first 36000 miles this truck worked great. after that it seemed to just self destruct. My wife refuses to ride in this vehicle she hates it so much. The worst part about it was that all the problems happened before it even got to 100,000miles. I would almost expect this to happen to a small car, but this is a truck. Trucks are supposed to be built tougher than cars. I was a Ford fan before I got this truck, but now I would rather walk than be given a Ford for free. I now truely now what they meant when they said: For Similar Products Used: Chevy S-10, Ford F-150. This truck could never compete with the S-10 |

I like everything about my 2000 ranger this is a reliable, versatile, comfortable, go anywhere beast. yes I know Ranger are considered compact pickups, but as opposed to my 2000 Toyota Tacoma the Ranger is comfortable spacious little truck. this is my frth Ranger I find that the Ranger supplies ample power with the 4.0 liter V6, it turns my 33" tires quite well, another high point is the 4.10 limited slip axle that is standard with the 4x4 off road package, I also find the new twin torsion bar front suspension to give the clearance needed to get over large rocks and other trail blocking obstacles, the ranger also has a comfortable well designed interior with all needed options at arms reach from the drivers seat. On performance even with my new 5spd auto (which is an exclusive tranny only to ford's compact trucks) I can still roast the tires and I'm runnin' 33"'s. Another strength is the optional four doors which inconvienently enough is not offered by toyota, nissan or chevy (which comes the closest with three doors)this options really makes the Ranger a definite buy. After rolling at 65 MPH in my 99 Ford Ranger due to my friends faulty driving, we rolled five times the truck luckily landed on it's feet, we then started the truck up and drove it out of the ditch we finally landed in, NOT A SCRATCH, thank you Ford. What can I say love the new model, this truck can work , cruise, and climb like a champ. To see mine go to www.rangerfanatic.com
Weakness:
The only weakness and I only call this a weakness cause I'm a powerhead, i want more power from the 4.0, 160 is very adequate but I want foolish amounts of power, gimmee the SOHC's 205 HP. And Ford please give the Ranger some of the F150's luxury features stop neglecting the Baby of the awesome truck family. $24,150 w/ a Color Matched Snugtop Camper shell. I bought my Tacoma foolishly for 25,150, which was less equipped and I paid more for the stupid ass logo, if only Ihad known. My recommendation is to not listen to all the meat heads about buying a Chevy ASS10 of a Toyota Tacoma buy a truck that fits everyone Buy a Ranger Similar Products Used: I mentioned before I also have a 2000 Toyota Tacoma which I was very disappointed with the primitive interior was the first disappoint meant if your going on a long trip be sure to bring a pillow to put behind you cause this truck will cripple you after 150 miles, no joke. This truck rides hard (ex. Compressed Spine), and the steering on this ride is clumsy with the tendency to over steer horribly, very front heavy. The range of approach on this truck is by no comparison worse than that of my Ranger, in my Ranger I can drive up the side of a steep hill whereas the Tacoma will actually hit the hil with the front of the truck. The Tacoma does have some power and gets great mileage to boot, but thats about the only commendable points. |

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger Super Cab 4x4. It is 4 door and a flareside XLT model. It has about 20,000 miles on it now and I have loved every minute of it. It is unbelievably capable off-road, as well as great riding on the road in terms of the ride, acceleration, and overall feel. It is a blast to drive and a breeze to own so far. The 4.0 litre engine makes it a pretty quick truck and with the optional tow package it can haul an amazing amount of weight. This is one of the toughest trucks on the road and I recommend it to anyone who is in the market for a pickup.
Weakness:
It eats a lot of gas, But then again waht 4x4 dosen't? All I can say is that this is a great truck and it deserves to be ranked amoing the best. It is an excellent all around vechile and that is why I am rating it so highly. Similar Products Used: None |

Good power. For a 3.0l it picks up nice and maintains speed. Stereo is nice for a standard system: cd, tape, am/fm 60 watt base. Interior is spacious and looks nice. Really like the keyless entry and the flareside style. Transmission seems to shift well no problems so far.
Weakness:
Only minor porblems. Really hate the govener on the truck. It keeps me from passing people that I know i could, without it. The interior material could be better. Leather would be cool. Sometimes it rides bumby but that is compared to a car. Id reccomend this truck. Its a head turner with the blue flare side model. I like to park next to s10's just to make their owners feel bad. Although the dakota is also a nice truck and probably has more power, it also has a higher price to accompany it. Overall this truck is freekn tight makes me feel confident in my choice of it over the s10. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Good ride (highly recommend 4x4 off-road package) and decent handling. Great stereo if you get the Dual Media CD/Cassette. Nice interior, Great looking truck. Awesome headlights light up everything.
Weakness:
Noisy engine (3.0L) Rear brakes grab in damp weather. Poor economy: I drive 90% highway and have never broken 17 mpg in 2 years and 21,000 miles of driving. I love the truck for the most part, but I will never, ever buy a 3.0L flex fuel engine again. It is VERY loud. I've had passengers comment that it sounds like an exhaust leak. I've driven other 3.0L flex fuel 1999 Rangers and they are the same and the dealer tells me it's got a different exhaust pipe and that's why it is noisier. Good looks and good on the highway. Lots of power with 4l motor
Weakness:
Bad service, Ford fixed the clunk when starting and stop only for it to return. The they said it was normal. ha ha . Truck is a danger off road as rear end jumps all over the place on small bumps. Those plastic mud-flaps dont alow you to drive offroad anyway.. I like the look of the truck and the way it handles on the highway Similar Products Used: 1994 4x4 toyota |

Good Power from the 4.0 V6
Weakness:
Light Rear End This vehicle was actually not a bad vehicle, but had small problems with it from day one. There was a vibration/hum coming from the rear end. The dealer could not find the problem. I was unprepared for the light rear end and choppy ride of the truck. I actually was able to lose control and wreck the truck going 10 miles per hour in four wheel drive on snow. The ride was not very comfortable at all. The gas mileage was horrible. I never got better than 15.2 miles per gallon during the 25000 miles I drove the truck. Similar Products Used: I got rid of the Ranger and now have a 1998 Chevy K1500 with 37000 miles on it. I really can't make a fair comparison. The Chevy is simply more truck. Probably the most noticable difference besides power is the ride quality and the absence of the light rear end. I no longer fear for my life when I get in my truck. I do wish the Chevy had the Ranger's more responsive brakes, though. |

Tires, 2wd I bought this truck (4.0 V6, 2wd)in Jan. 98 loved it until July 99 when I sold it. (I bought a Jeep Gr Chke from my mother in law....see that review under Jeep) The Ranger was a good tow vehicle (moved me to Denver from Chicago), daily driver, and weekend play toy. Every weekend was spend driving to Summit County from Denver and never had any problems. I didn't have 4x4 so there was limited ground clearence compared to some others in this category. There was plenty of bed space for mountain bikes, skis, and all the other toys. The stock tires had a conservative tread, this is the first upgrade I would make. Like all trucks, it needed some sand in the bed during the winter. The gas mileage(15 city, and 19 hwy) was good for a truck w/ manual transmission. The extended cab was extremeley useful and gave the truck a nice "balanced" look. I think the new Rangers have some very good option packages and would recommend this truck to anyone. Valves have to be adjusted This is one of the finest trucks I have ever owned. It may not be up to par with the newer ones...but it gets me from point A to point B fine. I now have over 150,000 miles on it....I will never sale or trade this truck in. Yes, I would buy another one and I do recommend it to anyone. Similar Products Used: 1998 Ford Ranger |
