I bought a 2002 Silverado in October of 2001 and since the day I bought it, the truck has used excessive oil about 1 quart every 2000 miles and intermittently smokes on startup. The dealership just kept changing the oil in it and ignoring it so I contacted GM via email and this was their response. Thank you for your e-mail to the Chevrolet Internet Response Center. Jeff Green (Service Manager at Dealership) has advised us that he can provide you with a Technical Service Bulletin that states that 1 quart of oil consumed per 100 gallons of fuel is within tolerance. Since this is considered a normal characteristic of the vehicle, there is no repair necessary. We assure you that it will not affect the drivability or safety of your vehicle. We have added your comments and our replies to your file, c06706331. Please refer to this file on any future correspondence. I was provided with the bulletin but I still have a problem with it. I have never owned a vehicle that used that much oil that didn’t have something wrong with it. Other than this problem I like the truck but I will say that I have lost faith in GM and I am not sure I will buy from them again. I know you can get problems in any vehicle so it comes down to whether the manufacture will stand behind what they sell or just ignore any problems. I am still arguing with GM about this so maybe eventually they will fix the problem but it wasn’t without a fight if they do fix it.

I got a good one...this vehicle has produced no [major] problems to date. I tow a boat 5,000 lbs like there is nothing behind me. The brakes are great, the trans and motor rocks the house. I don''t haul much just (2) kids and happy meals from McDonalds. The service department at Doug Chevrolet / Akron Ohio has treated me with respect and is alway there if I have a question or concern. This truck is very solid and has preformed to my expectations. The day my truck was built must of been a good one for the line guys / girls at the plant.

This was this worst vehicle my family has owned. Within a couple of weeks it went into the shop for various problems. My husband indicates it feels as though the vehicle was dropped from the delivery vehicle. It had an oil drinking problem, which was never resolved. There were times where the oil did not even register on the dip stick. We were advised that it is normal for trucks to use oil to begin with (which we were aware of), but we did not feel it should consume as much as it did It never ceased going into the shop. In the end GMC repurchased the vehicle. My fear is they placed it on a car lot elsewhere and now some other poor soul has it.

Strength:

Great ride, adequate power, brakes good, interior great so far with LT package

Weakness:

Transmission, erroneous low collant message, General tires

Great truck, with about 2500 miles, transmission sometimes downshifts out of overdrive, or somewhere between OD and 3rd gear, always on flat, level highway speeds of 60 to 70 mph, without cruise control engaged. Occasionally, it will reengage on it''s own, but usually takes passing gear to do it. When it starts, it usually does it continuously. Also, almost continuously, doesn''t want to shift into overdrive, under normal acceleration; you have to let off the power to allow the shift to take place, but not all the time. Had dealer service drive the truck, but could not duplicate the problem. Stated that any problem such as this, would show on the message center....never any message of any description. Read out computer, no faults. Had visit documented for future problems. Upon return trip home, on Interstate highway, problem occured 7 - 8 times on 12 mile trip. Have read all reviews this forum, did not see exactly the same problem. Other than this, the truck is probably the best yet. I''ve owned a chevy truck every 2-3 years since 1988, and the new body style, all had minor problems, nothing bad. Now have about 5000 miles, same thing.

Strength:

strong engine, when pistons are not banging against cylinder walls

Weakness:

gm is the weakness, selling defective engines. it is embarrissing when you start the engine in the morning, you can hear those pistons banging. most people think i have a diesel engine. the problem engines include the 4.8, 5.3, 6.0, and more. gm says the problem is normal. what a joke. remember gm will not fix the problem.

overall a good truck, but BEWARE of problems with the pistons. look up the website, gm piston slap. around 8000-10000 miles you will hear an noise that sounds like a bad lifter. this noise will get WORSE, they have defective pistons, the tolerances are bad. they call it cold morning knock, service bulletin 01-06-01-028. the engine makes the noise in the morning, first start up, the piston are banging against the cylinders. gm knows the problem, and will not fix it. lease this vehicle, do not buy, that way you can give the defective engine back to chevy. if you do not have the problem yet, you probably will.

Strength:

Large, roomy, powerful

Weakness:

Interior components seem cheap - cost cutting on interior shows. Annoying engine noise MUCH too early (30K miles and engine knock already present)

Overall, the truck seems like it SHOULD be a good truck, however, it seems to have had a lot of small, minor problems (some not even the fault of the truck) that add up to a less than "cozy" feeling about it. I traded my Ford Ranger 4wd in on this truck. Sometimes I wish I had my Ranger back. Don''t get me wrong, the truck has been good and reliable so far. Minor Problems: the windshield cracked the first week that I got it. The steering column "clunks" under the dash (prolly just a cheap bushing replacement), the suspension makes a loud "clunk" about 10 mins after stopping (prolly just leaf springs cooling), the interior light switch malfuncs and now comes on ONLY when set JUST RIGHT. The interior plastic stuff (drink holder, center bench, etc) squeak irritably. The Third Door opens on the PASSENGER side so the driver has to go around and let in and out the back seat passenger (annoying design). The shifting is a bit annoying. From steady hwy cruise speed, if you hit the accel to pass or merge, the trans wants to slam it all the way to redline when I just want a little extra "push." Major probs(?): rod or piston bearing knocking or something when you start the vehicle (at just 30,000 miles). First start of the day sounds like a diesel for the first few minutes. Goes away in a few mins as the engine warms. But still, annoying and I think it could be leading to something more serious. Service 4WD light coming on from time to time (coinciding with "drive select" button panel not having ANY light lit - usually has 2WD by default) at 60,000 miles. The interior is nice and roomy though, and overall I''m pleased with the truck. It just doesn''t inspire the confidence that my Ranger did.

Everything that can break will

This truck is as bad as they get. It spends more time in the shop then on the road. No joke. My valves have been replaced twice as well as steering components and just to bother me the running lights always burn out. I''ve replaced those five times and one is out again. The tranny clunks when I come to a stop and the brakes are terrible. I may need to buy an F.O.R.D

This truck is of average quality. I have owned it for 2 months. Im not cravy about the steering. It seems like it is out of allignment. I had it at the dealer and they state they dont see a problem. The steering wheel is always slighty turned to the right even when i am going straight.I like how the truck looks.Adequite power for what I use.I have the 4.3 regular cab 4x4.I had a 2000 4x2 prior to this one, traded in at 40,000 miles.

Good looks and nice ride on highway. Nice power out of 5300 V8 Nice paint Good mileage

Weakness:

Poor driveline engineering body/window fit seems lacking poor steering shaft engineering

This truck has had constant issues that have had it in the shop nearly every month since I bought it. Had the steering shaft repaced twice, had the driveline yoke replaced, the backend clunks whenever going over rough surfaces (shop says it is leafs), had emergency brake nearly fall apart, wind around right rear window, replaced throttle body once, noisy lifters after long trip, growling under hood under acceleration, auto trans sometimes fails to engage. I take it to Randy Jones Chevy in Corvallis, but they have had little luck in fixing most of the issues. This truck lacks solid engineering.
