I have a problem with the cruise control. When my vehicle starts up an incline the cruise shifts from 4th gear to 2nd instead of third. This takes it from 2000 rpm to a jump of 5000 rpm and then it quickly shifts back to 3rd gear. Is the reason because of the V6 or is there a technical problem that can be fixed?

Strength:

Very comfortable and classy. Pulls my racecar and trailer like a 1 ton dually without the cost of a Duramax. Compared to my old 1 ton van gettimg 9 mpg, I'm a happy camper at 13-14 mpg.

Weakness:

Wish there was a recall on the stearing shaft and AC vent servo motor problems.

I bought this truck new in late 2003 and now have 53k mi. on it. I drive it everywhere. Has the 6.0L V8, automatic, 2WD. Hard to say a bad thing about this truck. I love it and baby it. The only things I have had to do is replace the driver side heated mirror (stopped heating) covered under warranty and twice had the intermediate steering shaft replaced/rebuilt, once under warranty at about 25k mi. and again at about 35k mi. This is a problem Chevy is aware of but has not come up with a solid fix. I think it was replaced under warranty but at 35k mi. it was rebuilt, cost me $100., I can live with that. My wife’s 2003 Monte Carlo has the same problem. Biggest problem is an irritating AC vent servo motor clicking. The dealer is very aware of this problem but not under warranty anymore will cost about $700. to replace on the driver side. Would be cheaper if the other side but that's my luck. It's an intermittent problem, I just turn the AC off for a few seconds and back on and it goes away, sometimes for a few days, sometimes only a minuets. I changed the tires to 285's at about 45k mi. couldn’t wait to get rid of those stock 245's, way to small for this truck. I am kind of anal about the leather seats, I clean and condition them about every month but now 3 years later they look and feel like new. I like leather seats but I would rather have cloth than cracked ugly leather. I didn't like the stance of the stock truck (to high in the back) so I bought torsion leveling keys and replaced the stock keys to raise the front a couple inches. This will get the front up 4" higher than stock but the ride is way to stiff. I loosened the adjusting bolts to the point of taking them out and still a rough ride. I'm putting the stock keys back in and cranking them up for a nice ride and height combination.

Nothing realy..

When i swaped my 93 model for a new 99 model it was like comming from an agricultrural machine into a car. Still the rear axle is a bit rough but that's supposed to be like that in a pickup. I run this one on LPG wich is cheap in The Netherlands.

Model Reviewed: Silverado 1500 5.3L V-8

Strength:

Power, leg room, storage compartments, reliability, towing capacity, exterior design, interior design, comfort, convenient contols

Weakness:

-obviously the gas mileage
-no rain gutter to hold back water from the cab
-mediocre turning radius (as to be expected from big f#*@ing truck

I Bought this 2001 Silverado 1500 with 16,000 miles from a GM repo-auction. I got a great deal, paying $17,000 when blue book value was $21,500; I've owned it for almost 4 years.

Today with 73,000 miles I can say I'm 100% thrilled with it. If I had to complain at all, obviously it would be the gas mileage (avg 16 MPG); but a person who buys a full-sized pick-up, especially with a massive 5.3 liter V-8 under the hood, sounds like a moron complaining about fuel efficiency. If you want fuel economy, STOP NOW-YOU'RE READING THE WRONG REVIEW!!!!

The only other complaint I can think of is the lack of rain gutters to prevent water from dripping into the cab. During rains, or if the truck is parked with water on the roof and driven away with the windows down, water drips onto the interior door handle, soaking the power window controls. No big deal I guess, but I'm a smoker, and I have the windows down a lot.

As for the engine, the 5.3L V-8 is supurb. It accelerates nicely under normal driving and gets up super-quick when it needs to. On highway trips it drives quietly and the rear window seals are really the only outside noise I notice when the stereo is off. I have had ZERO mechanical problems, and ZERO non-mechanical problems. I will say that I'm very good on service; oil changes at the dealership every 3,000, and a transmission service at 50,000.(The manual recommends an automatic transmission fluid change at 100,000 miles under normal, non-towing driving. I just said what the hell and did it at 50,000 to be safe)

I changed the factory tires at around 25,000 miles and the second set lasted about 38,000 miles with regular rotations. Be sure to buy the lifetime rotations and balances when you buy tires for this truck because trucks, especially V-8's, are hard on tires. Rotate them every 4,000 or so to get optimal wear.

I have NEVER changed the brakes and unless the original owner changed them over his 16,000 miles of ownership, it still has the stock brakes at 73,000-AMAZING!!

The Silverado's interior is unmatched by the competing Ford F-150, Dodge Ram, and Toyota Tundra when it comes to room (the tiny back seat of a Tundra is like getting into a Honda Civic, very cramped). I'm 6-5 and the truck has more than enough room, even with passengers behind me. The leather seats are a plus and I highly recommend getting leather. The dash and gauge cluster are smartly designed, with cup holders conveniently located in the front of the center console. I also like all the storage space located in the door panels, center console, seat-backs, and over-head compartments.

The self activated headlights and daytime running lights are nice. When it gets dark, the headlights come on by themselves, and when it's light out, the DRL come on.

The Silverado is extremely nice for road trips. I drove from Los Angeles to New York and back, then a year later, L.A. to Seattle and back, and I've driven from L.A. to Las Vegas twice a year every year I've owned it. On the road trips is where I appreciate the V-8 most. Climbing the Rocky Mountains with the A/C on and the cruise control set to 75 MPH is nice; even though it was pricey at the pump, who wants to crawl up a 25% grade at 45 MPH in third gear with no A/C?

*****THE BOTTOM LINE*****

If you're considering a full-sized pick-up truck that has lots of power and leg room, the Silverado is a great buy. If you want fuel economy, don't buy a truck!! Remember, the V-6 Silverado only offers one mile per gallon more on the highway, and has the same EPA rating around town as the V-8. So if you ever want to tow anything remotely large, get the V-8!

With proper maintenance, the Silverado is very reliable and drives well. After 4 years of ownership and 60,000 miles of driving, I'm 100% sold!

Strength:

Has lots of power with the 5.3 L V-8. Handles well.

Weakness:

Built weak. One tear up after the other. Chevy is now building for quantity not quality.

I was very excited when I furst purchased my Chevy 4x4 Silverado Regular Cab with the 5.3L pickup. Two weeks after I had it, a sensor went out in the transmission and the tow/haul button had no effect. Also within this two week time span, an interior plastic piece just fell off over night. I had a leak from my windshield which caused water to leak into my cab every time it rained. I got all that fixed. 3 months later, the AC went out in it, and a new compressor was put in. 7 months after I purchased this vehicle, a very noticable and aggravaiting squeaking became evident every time I turned or hit a bump. I took it into the dealership and the teather mounts that were put on in the factory were put on backwards! Almost a year to the date I purchased it, There became a clicking and vibrating in the steering, The 4WD does not lock in and out properly, and my check engine light comes on and off periodically. After taking it back to the dealership for the 4th time, They said another sensor went out in my computer and that they fixed the other things. Now, a month later, the clicking and vibrating in my steering is back louder than ever and my four wheel drive locks in and out when "engaged". I have been looking at trading but can't without becoming upside down. Overall, I am very disappointed with this truck. I am a college student who needs something dependable with no trouble. I had a F-150 which I had 6 years and put 168,000 miles on and only had to replace one starter and one alternator. All in all I am displeased with my Cheverlet. I have contacted corporate and they told me that it would keep getting fixed. Well thats great until the warranty goes out on it.

Lots of electronic problems
one thing breaks after another
It's also a very loud truck, weather stripping is not good quality

Overall a decent truck, however I have not been happy with the little achy breaky attitude that this thing has. Doesn't have the passing power of any of the other trucks i've driven. Annoying electronic problems seem to plague any chevy that we've ever bought. Fuel gauge went out 2-3 times, air conditioning is very weak compared to other models. But it is a comfortab;e vehicle, best seats in the business.

I totaly love this truck i tow a 21500# 5th wheel with it every day and it does great it downshifts on down hills better than any full size pickup, only because of its allison tranny. it is geared real low i love it. my buddy has a 2005 f350 powerstroke with the 6.0 and it is way under powered for its size and capability. over all this truck kicks major rubber.

You will pay at the pump, but what do you expect for a fullsize truck, with tons of umph!

This truck is superior to all the others I have inquired about. Gas mileage is not a big issue with truck drivers, if you want great mileage, buy a small size p/u with 4 cyls. If you like a sleek looking truck, w/ great lines, comfortable seating for all, get one of these babys. Looks good, and works hard if you need it!

I get about 17 MPG on the highway and about 15 MPG in town. I'd like to get more!

My 1997 Silverado was used when I bought it. It had been well taken care of, and had about 40K miles on it. I needed a comfortable pick-up to drive to work. I travel 80 miles round trip daily nearly all on the highway.

I have been very pleased with every aspect of this vehicle and wish I could buy another one just like it. I am a big man at 6-1" and about 270# and I have lots of seat room on the 60/40 seating with a lot of leg room. I can drive this vehicle all day and all night and not feel cramped or uncomforable. The vehicle is still tight, the carpets and upholstry have held up well and I still like driving it as much as any vehicle I have ever had.

In my 176K miles I have replaced only the water pump and alternator. I service the vehicle regularly and try to keep everything in good condition.

I use this 350 vortec powered pick-up to tow my boat to the lake and it pulls great. In fact it just plain pulls better than my son's newer Silverado!

In the final analysis; I would buy another pick-up just like this one in a second.
