Other than the tranny, great engine and catchy interior. This thing tows very well and is great off road even though it is 2wd. I am very easy on this thing.
Weakness:
TRANSMISSION,TRANSMISSION,TRANSMISSION!!!!!! There is slight play in the drive. This was another thing the dealer is clueless about. To tell the truth, I don't believe I will be buying another Chevy truck. It would have to be older. My dad has had 3 chevys; early 90's; and they have been great for him. I am very disapointed with this product. I have always been a chevy guy but this one is terrible. I have 47k and as I am writing this, a new transmission is being installed. I started having problems about 3 months ago (after the warranty expired) and it has been in 4 times times since then and the dealership finally threw up their hands and said "we don't know what the hell is wrong." Fortunate for me, they are covering this problem under warranty. |

Strength:
Exellent fit/finish in and out. Automatic 4x4 is nice. Nice ride. Can't complain about much, honestly.
Weakness:
Wish the tilt steering wheel had one more notch of adjustment between the stops. Either a little too high or too low. Very minor complaint. This is the first Chevy truck I've owned, and I'll NEVER buy anything but Silverado again! I know some may have had problems,(what car/truck doesn't?), but mine has been perfect. Very nice truck after 30,000 happy miles. Always been a Ford man, but I'm glad I bought the Chevy. Hope this helps in any decision you make regarding purchasing a truck. silverado 1500HD crewcab 2wd
Strength:
great looks, plenty of power, nice leather interior, pretty much all the standard bells and whistles. Nice layout on the instrument panel with easy access. Plenty of ice cold air , especially here in Florida. Plenty of storage areas. Very roomy inside. Absolutely the best brakes I`ve had on a vehicle. These things WILL stop you, NOW. I can feel the ABS working when needed. With the exception of some flaws and my peeves, this is an exceptional truck and I would definitely buy another one.
Weakness:
chevy should have better utilized the console space where they put the OUT OF DATE cassette player. Nobody I know of uses cassettes anymore, come on chevy, I could have thought of a hundred other things to put there, like a bigger cd storage space, dvd screen etc. Water runs off the roof right into my arm and lap if the windows are down when I make my first turn after it has rained. Tires are too small for a truck of this size. Remember this is a "HD" truck not a S-10 truck. Why do I have to push the dome over ride button FOUR times just to turn off the lights. The Naval Station Gate Guards give me the Deer in the Headlight look when I leave them on because of the inconvenience. The aft overhead compartment is absolutely useless. It wouldnt be so bad if it foldeed down further than it does so you could actually put something in it. So far I have no use whatsoever. I think spray in liners would be a nice standard factory option. Most people buy this type of truck to tow with, I think chevy should have installed the electric brake controller with the Z82 tow package, they give you the harness anyway. The turning radius sucks even in normal store parking lots.Need 03 quad steering. I purchased this truck as a demo with 7000 miles. Originally I wanted a 3/4 ton 4x4, but when i came across the 1500 HD,I realized that this would handle everything I would need when towing my 26 foot travel trailer. On top of that I saved myself about 4 grand. So far I have had the opportunity to test out this HD monster by hauling a full load of firewood and tow my trailer. I was utterly amazed when I filled the bed with wood to see the bed still slanting up in the back. My older previous truck, a 1992 1500 silverado would have been squatting. While hauling the wood home I couldnt tell there was anything in the bed, in fact it seemed to drive smoother considering the stiffness of the suspension. When towing my trailer (5500 LBs.)last week, I was able to maintain the posted speed limit of 70 miles per hour with no problem. The engine wasnt even having to work hard at 2100 rpm`s. I had a guy next to me that would not slow down or speed up so I could get over in the next lane, so I gave it more gas to pass and reached 85 miles per hour immediately. I know towing at this speed is usually not recommended which I dont normally do, but my point is that this truck gained speed without the trailer affecting it at all. The 6 liter engine has that much power. I have added a dual inlet , dual outlet flowmaster 50 series muffler with stainless tips and a K&N generation ll airfilter. These two items alone woke this engine up. I plan to install a high performance mass air flow sensor along with utilizing a hypertech computer chip programmer to mess around and see what kind of additional horsepower, towing power and fuel economy I can get. Its gonna be interesting. Similar Products Used: 1992 silverado 1500, 1999 GMC yukon |

Chevrolet Silverado
Strength:
Power-plenty Comfort may be compared to a luxury car. Reliability-so far, so good. No rattles or squeeks most of the time. A wash board road will bring a few out but they disappear when you hit the pavement. Fuel economy is not the best in the world but equal to or better than some pickups with smaller engines.
Weakness:
Leather seating surfaces are fine but the vinyl used on the non-seat surfaces of the upholstery looks like something left over from the bargain bin at PEP Boys from the 1950's. Not sort of cheap looking stuff by REAL CHEAP looking stuff. Have found several areas where the On-Star system is useless and these are the areas where you might need it most. On-Star is a hybrid system that uses some satellite technology and some cell phone technology. The cell tech is the weak link as it makes the inital contact with who ever it is that it contacts. This truck is a SLT long box crew cab 4X4 with the 8.1 gas engine, Allison AT and 3.73 in the tail end. During the 1st month of ownership the power windows had some problems and the defroster would not work. These were corrected by the dealer and no problems have reoccurred. The rear overload springs made a metal to metal contact with the mainspring when lightly loader and you could hear the truck comming a mile away when on anything other than smooth asphalt. Talked with GM tech service and was pretty much informed that that was the nature of the beast. Finally found out that GM has some rubber caps that fit over the ends of the load spring. These were ordered, installed and now all is quiet as a sleeping puppy. These are the only problems experienced in 24,000 miles. The 4WD gets this vehicle in and out of the meadows and slushy roads without any problems. The 8.1 has totally adequate power and will tow 6,000 lbs with an additional 2,000 lbs in the bed as if none of it were there. Will use 1 qt of oil between changes (4,000 mi intervals). Fuel consumption is 13 to 14 mpg when loaded as above. Generally 16 to 17 mpg when lightly loaded and running a steady 70 mph. Comfort level is high with good seating and lumbar support. A 800 mile day is not a killer. Overall an excellent vehicle. I will most likely purchase another in the next year or so. Similar Products Used: '95 and '97 Chev, '92 and 2000 Dodge diesel pickups. |

Chevy Silverado 1500 LT Z71
Strength:
- 5.3L has amazing power - LT models leather seats are very comfortable
Weakness:
-Factory tires are weak for a 4wd drive truck. - ABS brakes are scary when on washboard or broken pavemnet roads. - interior creaks and rattles I bought this truck used with 50000km on it in a private sale. So far i haven't had any real problems except for two flats in the same day. Chevy should really think about putting Light Truck tires on there 4wd's instead of passenger rated tires. I have also experienced the same lifter noise/piston slap on cold starts as other owners have experienced on the V8 engines. I am also disappointed with the ABS system on this truck. When traveling on broken pavement or washboard roads the ABS overcompensates too much and braking power is non-exisent. So far i have had two real close calls where i hit the brakes and nothing happened because the ABS came on when it shouldn't have. Other than that i really like this truck. I particularly like the power of the 5.3L and the leather seats. |

Pickup 1500 4x4
Strength:
It still runs and looks like new with $114,000 except the transmission problem.
Weakness:
Transmission The truck has been very reliable with one exception, the transmission quit at 109,000 mile, I've since learned that the transmission in the 1500 is prone to problems and owners should only expect 100,000 miles with light use, heavy use the transmissions do not last this long. To get a decent transmission buy the 2500 or 2500HD. |

LS Extra Cab, 2-WD
Strength:
Engine runs strong with power to spare and the gas mileage is great. Super smooth ride with plenty of comfort and roominess. Fit and finish is second to none. Very dependable!
Weakness:
None! Bought this truck new in May of 2000 using my GM Supplier discount and have been very happy ever since! It came with the 4.8L V-8 and certainly doesn't lack for any power. My wife and I have traveled most of the country in this truck, sometimes pulling a carhauler trailer, and you couldn't ask for a more comfortable, smooth and quiet ride. It handles and rides better than most cars I've driven and the gas mileage has been great. The only problems we've had were in the first six months and were low fuel pressure (a bad fuel pump), clunk in the steering and the horn fuse kept blowing. All was corrected by the dealer and the truck hasn't missed a beat since with the odometer showing just over 50,000 miles now. In fact, we love this truck so much that I'm planning on trading in the car for a regular cab 4x4 Silverado. That way there won't be any more arguments on who gets to drive the truck as we'll each have our own! Similar Products Used: 1993 Silverado |

/ Silverado EXT. Cab 1500
Strength:
Roomy extended cab and back seat and not bad on gas with the V6 Vortec engine.
Weakness:
Engine does not seem to be enough for an extended cab, especially with the airconditioning on. Rear end differential slips with only 2500 miles on it and it has since new. Right door speaker was blown at time of pick-up from the dealer and Coggin Chevrolet at the Avenues said I can bring it in on a Sat. with a first come first serve basis. They also told me to be there at 7:00 a.m. as the line would be very long and still could not guarantee I would be seen. Slow at the start, but nice cruising once on open highway. Okay truck for the price I paid for it. I GMS'ed this vehicle and would have been extremely dissapointed if I had paid the full price of $24,656. Silverado Ext Cab LS 4x4
Strength:
Engineering, including powerful yet economical engines, a clever tow/haul transmission feature that actually works, ergonomics and comfort, handling (for a truck), decent rear seating. It's a good highway cruiser.
Weakness:
Rear suspension sags, locking rear differential operation is inconsistent, lots of rattles, too much soft plastic (especially the door panels) for hard use or harsh climates. Problems have included the lifter noise (lifters replaced when head gaskets done, no improvement in noise), Z71 package shocks died very quickly and replacements were no better, head gasket leaks (replaced both), steering arm noise (replaced twice), recurring electrical fault in instrument cluster that eventually affects cruise, windows, and other electrical items, tranfer case output yoke clunk (replaced), pinion seals, etc A well engineered truck of questionable build quality. Being the first year of a new model, I purchased the extended warranty, and have been thankful I did. Although a pleasure to drive, the truck has experienced numerous problems. Although perhaps operated in a more severe environment than most reviewers, the truck has been serviced very frequently, using all the best parts, including synthetic oil in the engine and drivetrain. The problems seen to stem from the factory, not the use, and started from new. Currently at about 62,000 miles, the truck is less tired but no 'tighter' than my 1983 Toyota 4x4 with 220,000 miles Similar Products Used: 1990 Suburban 4x4, 1991 Chevrolet one ton van, |

Drives good, quieter than most trucks, looks great
Weakness:
All V8 Vortec engines! They are great performers but you have a better than 50/50 chance of getting one that will sound like a thrashing machine on a cold start after a few thousand miles. There is no cure for this problem. Ask your dealer or email me. Chevrolet is still selling record numbers of vehicles based on the reputation they got from their early 90's fuel injected motors. However, before you buy one ask your dealer if Chevy has solved the cold engine knock problem! They have not!!!!!!!!!!!! Similar Products Used: 91 and 94 Chevy's |
