Model Reviewed: Chevrolet S-10 Xtreme

Strength:

4.3L is slightly tuned up on the Xtreme package. Ground effects look excellent on the truck. Fog lights add to the sporty look. Stock sport suspension is great. No need to make expensive upgrades to lower the truck or for aftermarket ground effects.

Weakness:

Gas mileage has been nothing special. The 4.3L has been getting me between 13.5 and 15 mpg tops. The Goodyear Eagle GA 235/55R16's handle poorly, especially in snow and rain. Interior is a bit cramped on the regular cab model.

At $128 a month (leased), the Chevrolet S-10 Xtreme could not be passed up. That was the main reason for the purchase of the truck. I would definatly recommend this truck to anyone looking for a factory lowered setup with factory installed ground effects, which just so happens to all be covered under the warranty. Performance parts can also be put on the truck to get a little more kick out of the V6.

This truck is an excellent starting piece if you are looking to build a showstopper.

Strength:

The 4 cyl is much faster than other trucks with the same engine. looks better than any other truck on the market. Very comfortable with nice interior

Weakness:

the engine

Over all it is a sweet truck. It is much cheaper than a dodge R/T or a for lightning. Every where i drive it catches the attention of other people. It gets good gas milage with the 4 cyl. I would recomend this truck to anyone who wants a good looking truck and doesnt want to pay big bucks. Its a bad ass truck

Lots and lots of power, Chev's high standard of quality is seen in this vehicle as all of their others. Quiet and smooth ride.

Weakness:

Sport package includes 235/55 R16 tires which are really poor in snowy/wet conditions (plus they are a "GOODYEAR" product.

Strength:

reliable, looks nice, easy to get parts
this model has the beefier rear suspension

Weakness:

doors hinges are welded on so there's no way to adjust them (hence all the door slamming comments in the other reviews)

I paid $1500 3 years ago when it already had 250,000 miles on the original engine (it was used for a delivery service). I'm the 2nd owner and I've put another 30,000 miles on the same engine. It has only broken down on me once in the last 3 years. It has plenty of power for hauling lumber, etc, even though it's just the little 2.5L. It gets about 22 mpg in town and is just a good reliable "beater" truck. I'm not sure about the previous comment about this truck not being any good if you're over 5' - I'm 6'5", 220 lbs, and it fits me pretty good - course I wouldn't want to drive it cross-country or anything. I just replaced the brake pads, rotors, wheel bearings, *and* calipers - for $115 total in parts! It's been a good light duty work truck.

Strength:

Nice rims, stock radio, good looks, smooth ride.

Weakness:

Most everything. The inside of the truck creeks like an old car. The gas milage isn't any better than 21 mpg. The breaking is TERRIBLE.

I paid about $18,000 for mine back in early '98. I bought the extended cab with a V-6 and manual transmission. There have been nothing but little problems with it since. Weather stripping falls off, oil hoses deteriorate, steering is noisy at some points (not from lack of fluid), the list goes on. I've looked at considering this a lemon, but the paperwork seemed a bit too much for the amount of time that I could spend. I'll never buy another one of these small pickups. The good thing is that it looks good and drives smoothly.

98 s-10, regular cab, shortbed, 4 cyl., LS, AT, bucket seats, Al rims. Excellant handling. Good reliability. Decent styling. Good value. Power from engine is adequate for a 4 cyl.

Weakness:

Has had a rattle since I bought it at high RPM. Fish eyes in paint job on edge of hood. Should have bought a 6 cyl, tilt, cruise, and extended cab.

$12,800 new. I would recommend it. You get what you pay for.

Strength:

2000 S-10 LS. Like the new front grill/light styling, value, color choices, interior room (i'm 6'1)...

Weakness:

the plastic strip behind the seats--anoying noise with seat all the way back (they fixed this problem with my '94--but it returned with my 2000!)

Got the GM family discount so it was under invoice...but that's not the entire reason I got this truck. I have had 2 other s-10's and had excellent reliability. Most roomy truck in its class for me, great head room! I paid a little extra for the upgraded suspension, glad I did this time. Great in snow with sand tubes in the bed (if you know how to drive in these conditions in the first place). engine and 5sp manual adequate for my lighter duty usage. If you are looking for a good LIGHT duty truck for a fair price--this is a good one. Almost bit the bullet and paid more for the Ranger because the styling is a little nicer and rides slightly quieter, but not enough head/leg room. My friend that has a '98 Ranger, likes my S-10 better.
This truck is a good purchase if you are looking for a light duty truck for a fair price. Don't buy this truck if you are looking for a hard core work horse that needs size and power or if you are planning to haul major heavy loads. Don't get the base model if you will be using this vehicle for your everyday transportation, spend a little more and get the LS package, better styling/less noise...you get what you pay for!

Strength:

4.3 Vortec TBI engine had great power and good gas milage. Truck is comfortable inside. Everything in easy reach. It's a little truck that catches the eye, and works as hard as I do.

Weakness:

That damn shift light on the dash. Some of you know what I'm talking about. Suspension isn't really set up for towing. I just added air shocks in the rear and it fixes the problem with out really killing the pocket book. Lack of a tach in the standard cluster. Needs aux headlights or fog lamps as standard equip.

I love this truck. I'm a music major in school and end up moving equipment, and towing quite often. This truck is fun to drive, work on, and work with. It does have some duffuculty shifting every once in a long time. More of a pain then complaint. It's sporty whitch is important for me, but also fuctional. I bought the truck from my brother and I know how hard he drove if for quite some time. I took the chance and have no problems with it. One word of advice: for winter build a box out of 2x4's and put sand in the bed. You'll need it. And don't rely to heavily on the abs. Altho there is a recall on them which I haven't had taken care of yet. Maybe it'll help with the stopping distance.

Strength:

The 2.8 had good power and was very reliable

Weakness:

looks, noise, uncomfortable, doors must be slammed, stereo sux, 5 spd. transmission can't be power-shifted or even shifted quickly??? door weatherstrip failed, too low for ANYTHING, Overall, an annoying truck

I paid $4,300 for this truck in 96 when it had 43k miles on it. I drove it until it had about 80k in 99. There was never a period of time when I liked this truck. I didn't get rid of it only because I couldn't afford to. Imagine 3 years of hating your truck. It sucked!

I have no complaints about the engine other than it was loud, which is actually probably the exaust system's fault. The rest of the truck, however, is built like a disposable piece of trash. The body is flimsy and loves to dent when you lean on it. The doors won't close unless you slam them. You scrape bottom if you do anything but cruise the suburbs. The door weatherstrips fail, making lots of wind noise and water leakage. The bench seats are hell on long trips; you'll find yourself constantly shifting around. The glove box is flimsy and the door breaks off. The transmission grinds when you have to shift quickly (the time when you least need something like that). Oh yea, and don't buy this truck if you're over 5'. 1 flaming chili and I think I'll torch the truck too!

Model Reviewed: S10 Extended Cab LS 4cyl. 2wd

Strength:

Interior layout is nice, with everything at where you expect it to be.
Many extras for the price.

Weakness:

Just about everything. From the day I drove it off the lot, only to find myself dripping transmission fluid, to the day I traded it in, I disliked this truck. The four cylinder engine is a joke, even if you only want to pull a Sea Doo. Even without hauling anything, beware of hills, and be extremely careful when passing on two lane roads.
The engine sounds horrible, even though I had every scheduled maintainance performed on time. Cold mornings are terrible to this truck. There is little ground clearance (though I knew this up front). It rides so bad that the CD player I put in it skips so bad that I didn't even use it. The driver's door must be slammed to get it closed properly. Driving noise is horrible.
It never left me stranded, but then I would never expect a new vehicle to so do. I will never purchase a Chevy again.

If I recall, I paid 14000.00 for mine, new. I do not recommend this truck to anyone, especially if you want a truck to use as a truck, and not simply a vehicle for around town.

The tacoma is the only one to compare apples to apples with, and I will simply say that there is a reason the Tacoma's are more expensive -- they're built much better.
