a little pricey, but definitely worth it!

Fantastic vehicle!

Great on and off pavement. Enjoyable if you are running to the store, hauling lumber, towing a boat, or treking up a mountain or through a stream (speaking from experience in all areas). Good low-end torque, sufficient power throughout the RPM band. Toyota craftshmanship tops off the deal too... Toyota quality and reliability are wonderful.

Model Reviewed: 4Runner SR5 2WD

Strength:

Sturdy feel; sufficient cargo room, especially with rear seats folded down; Reliable like many Toyota's; adequate torque and power from the V6; Comfortable interior; Lots of flexibility with options; Easy to maneuver and park; Great visibility; High profile makes it fun to drive.

Weakness:

Suspension tends to be somewhat bouncy (like a typical light truck) - we had to let some air out of the tires to soften up the ride.

This truck is not cheap compared to other on the room, but the quality and praticality of it makes it worth it. We choose to get 2WD to save some $$ and atfer realizing we would never use 4WD in California. We loaded up on all the options which made it just like the Limited, w/o the price & 4WD. If you are looking for a long-term, reliable purchase of a practical good-looking SUV, I strongly recommend this. Unless you need the extra room and gas mileage of an Expedition, stick with Toyota.

Model Reviewed: Limited 4WD

Strength:

The 4Runner is great off road and refined on road. It's a great balance. Plenty of ground clearance, and (until '01) the option of a rear locking differential. I like the full-time 4x4, too, although I had to buy a Limited to get it (corrected in '01!). The interior is comfortable and well built. The exterior is attractive. Overall, it's among the most solid SUVs I've ever ridden in. And, of course, reliability!

Weakness:

-Highway passing is not that great
-The rear seat is roomy, but a little thin
-Cost cutting is evident- no driver-side vanity mirror, etc.

I'd buy another in an instant. It's great off road, gets great fuel economy for an SUV, and it has a buttery-smooth on-road ride. Today, however, I'd buy an SR5 with the Sport package. The 2001s have full-time 4x4, skid control, brake assist and heated seats on the Limiteds- all big upgrades.

I'd also recommend 4x4. Especially now that you can use it on the pavement. Why do people buy 4x2 SUVs? They have horrible traction on the pavement and they pollute. If you don't go off road and don't need the ground clearance, don't buy a 4x2. Buy a Saab or Audi wagon. They're a lot more fun to drive!

Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ 4x4 V8. I nearly bought one, but it's a little loud and a little small.
Land Rover Discovery II. The front seats are a little cramped and it's way underpowered, plus I worried about safety.

Strength:

Styling, Power Tailgate Window, Value Holding Ability, Handling

Weakness:

Small Gas Tank, Mechanical Environment Controls

Paid $28K for a '98 LTD with 14K miles. Beautiful car. Bought it because I was looking for a little luxury and the ability to haul a 95 lb dog in the rear. This is the only SUV with power tailgate window that allows my dog to breath without steaming up the interior windows. This feature is a MUST HAVE for all dog owners. Power is sufficient for minor off-road excursions; handling is nice even in the B/S traffic of the Bay Area; and there is plenty of room.

The bad news is the 16 gallon gas tank and the mechanical environmental controls on the '98 models. I have seen the electronic versions on all 2000 LTDs.

Looked at Explorers, Durangos (for hicks only), and Pathfinders/QX4s. Explorer was nice but cramped and bad tailgate. Durangos were terribly disappointing w/ styling and interior design (also did not want to get mistaken for a NASCAR fan). Pathfinder/QX4 were too small and wouldn't want to drive the same car (QX4) for $8K more just to have an Infinit emblem on it.

4RUNNER: Great buy if you have the money upfront, you will most assuredly get it back when you trade it in or sell it. Hoping to upgrade to a Land Cruiser in 4 to 5 years.

Strength:

Strong Chasis, Stiff ride, Reliability, Light and Surefooted , Powerful braking . Can sleep/shag in the back . Love the removable top . Lots of extra room for storage, Contains excellent sound .

Weakness:

Lack of Torque power, the " imfamous rear tire well rust out !" and staling/jamming rear window . Slight Blind spot while in reverse , Left Rear .

I'm very pleased with my purchase, Spent less then a thousand dollars , in repairs in three years , and put on over a hundred thousand clicks on Her . Drives very well both on and off road, excellent small SUV for in icey, compact snow situations . Unfortunatley I'll be forced to take immediate action Spring time rust and renovations repair . Over all I rate it very high for Price to Supply Ratio , Its has got me farther and less flustered, anywhere, Places I have had problems with vehicals, And I plan on spending a portion of the money I've saved on the purchase towards maintaining and upgrading my vehical . 4Runner Is Top Dogg . And I think that I would, without a doubt buy another Toyota SUV or ten, in the future . Of corse when I find it feesable, that is . One Love ! WHISTLER,BC CANADA SAYS HELLO !!

Strength:

Roomy. Nice interior, especially with the folding seats. 4 wheel drive comes in handy; especially with the V6.

Weakness:

Rear window jams near the half way position. Rear wiper may not seat properly after operation. There is only a 5mph difference when shifting from 4th to 5th.

I have only driven my 4Runner for about 3 months now and I love it! It sits high and I can see all around me. The side mirrors are large and the anti-glare in the rearview visor really comes in handy at night. The engine is really quiet. This one is a keeper!
