Strength:
No problems at 5000 miles. Great stereo (upgraded speakers/tweeter). Great handling in the rain/snow. Good clearance. Decent appearance. Smooth ride. Good cargo carrying ability.
Weakness:
I would have to stretch: seats are a bit hard, tan interior gets dirty easily, factory leather option on base model would be nice, not much else to complain about. New models are bound to have problems. My 96 Honda Civic (1st year of new style) was recalled 11 times for various issues. So much for Honda reliability!!!The 2000 OB was a new model and probably had a few bugs as well. I have 5000 miles on my 2002 OB without incident. Being in distribution, I hear complaints from customers all the time. Most problems are caused by misuse. A customer will break an item and then insist on replacement. If you don''t replace, you are the bad guy. The complaints I see posted here are identical to the ones in my business. It''s like a broken record!!! These few just want to vent their anger at a particular Subaru dealership. Similar Products Used: 2000 OB - good car, 2001 Forester - good car, 1996 Mountaineer - fair car. |

Strength:
• Ride height • Reliability • Dealer support • AWD is way better than 4x4 • Clean instrumentation • Boxer engine is stable in corners • Plenty of room to haul stuff with
Weakness:
• 1996 Needs high octane gas • Slow off the line Great car. Hands down the best that I’ve owned. I’ll be completely honest and tell you that sometimes I long for the cool factor of an Xterra or the machismo of the GMC Yukon, but when I run the numbers and think seriously about what I want from a car the Outback is far and away the best choice. I decided to buy the Outback after I got tired of my Jeep Cherokee breaking down, and after I was tired of my insurance company charging me 15% more for 4 wheel drive on my 4Runner. The Outback has been solid in the snow and predictable when it’s dry. AWD is the greatest thing that I’ve had. A Swiss Army knife for the woods and city too. There are things that I wish that I would change, as with anthing. It’s a bit underpowered, but that just means that it takes a bit longer to get up to illegal speeds. Never been a real problem. There has been a problem with the check engine light being on for no apparent reason (Maybe me putting 87 gas in it I think) but with a car that has 100,000 miles on it and otherwise is perfect I’m ok with ignoring the light until it goes back off. I just replaced the timing belt on it to prepare to get the next 100,000 miles on it and had a great dealer experience. They were actually the cheapest place I found to replace the belt, and they cut me a deal on the other things that I decided to do at the same time (sparkplugs, etc). Great experience with the dealer overall. Similar Products Used: Jeep Cherokee, Toyota 4Runner, VW Jetta, Mazda Truck, Toyota Trucks, Honda Accord. |

Subaru Impreza Outback Sport
Strength:
Great handling, on wet or dry pavement. Very good in the snow.
Weakness:
A manufacturer who is not willing to stand by their cars. Clutches are a problem on these cars, as are front and rear wheel bearings. Both dealers I dealt with provide subpar service. My ''98 Impreza Outback Sport has had clutch problems since the low-thousand miles. Repeated requests to my dealer to fix the problem were met with stonewalling and condescension - until the car ran out of its warranty. The first service after the car was out from warranty and, gosh, look, my clutch was shot and needed to be replaced immediately: $1200 please. There are a number of other things that have gone wrong with the car. I talk about them, and give much more detail on the clutch issue at http://www.thethoughtshop.com/badclutch/. Strength:
The all wheel drive is handy in the snow.
Weakness:
MILAGE is very poor, I got better mileage in my 4x4 truck. Noisy engine and leaky muffler cruise control extremely rough shifting is rough Extremely overpriced for the qaulity of the vehicle ... I could go on but I will not buy another Subaru I purchased this car thinking it was a practical vehicle for winter driving. I also figured I would get somewhere close to the mileage they estimated. This has been a huge dissapointment. The gearing on the vehicle is ridiculaous, it always seems like it should be in the next gear and in fifth gear it seems like you should have two more gears to get into cruising mode. |

Outback
Strength:
- Cargo room - Comfortable interior and smooth ride, - Very safe and secure feeling driving in all kinds of weather. - I also love the looks of this car and get compliments on it often.
Weakness:
Poor positioning of the cup holder and the seat warmer buttons (no big deal though) In the back cargo area, it is a shame they could not have made the interior out of a sturdier material. I have had the back tail gate and side walls ruined. Once I had some rocks for my garden in the back, when I made a turn one rolled into the back tailgate and punched a hold in the thin, flimsy material. Another time I had a propane tank for my grill, which tipped and put a hole in the little storage compartment door. That is my biggest complaint with this car. I have owned my Subaru now for 7 months and LOVE it. I just survived the lake-effect snowstorms we dealt with here in Buffalo Christmas week...this car was awesome. I had to drive through several towns that had driving bans in effect and this car never lost traction ONCE. It was nice to feel so safe and secure. I appreciate the ammenities inside...the all weather package is truly appreciated in our winters and the cargo room is very generous. I have two golden retrievers who love to tag along and they have plenty of room in the back. The upgraded stereo system is excellent. I have read some people are not pleased with the acceleration of this vehicle, but it does a super job for me. It seems to have plenty of power and the automatic shifts very smoothly. Looks great, Limited Ed. has nice features
Weakness:
Doesn''t perform as promoted - the vehicle I got, anyway. I am severely disappointed with this vehicle. I purchased a Subaru because if it''s reputation, styling and "do-everything" setup. However, after putting on 18,000 miles, I have had numerous problems with mechanical aspects (glove box latch broke, moonroof wouldn''t open, A/C vent tube clogged, etc.), all of which were fixed under warranty, but I wouldn''t have expected so many problems from a car with Subaru''s reputation. The most disturbing problem has been the gas mileage. I have been getting 22-23 mpg for day to day driving, and only 25 mpg on the several long distance trips I have taken. I do very little city driving, and expected that the mfg. estimates of 22 to 28 mpg would put me at 25 mpg for daily use and near or above 28 mpg for long trips. I have had it checked by two different dealerships, and was told that "that''s just the way these run", although I know other people who have the same vehicle and have gotten significantly better gas mileage. When the car is on the highway, at normal highway speeds, it sounds like it needs another gear, as though 5th isn''t enough. I have gotten what I feel is lip service from the two dealerships as well as the email customer service replies from comments to Subaru itself. Had I gotten someone representing Subaru to take an interest in finding out why it wasn''t performing as it should, I would be content - but, I wouldn''t buy another Subaru product, ever, based on my experience with the Corp. Subaru Legacy
Strength:
AWD system. Reliabilty. Durablility. Safety. Handeling compared to SUVs.
Weakness:
Poor acceleration. Clearance is a bit low. Few creature comforts. Subarus are everywhere in Salt Lake City. It''s the modern equivalent of the VW Bug craze of the 1970s. My 1993 Subaru Legacy Wagon AWD has been a great car for me over the past seven years. I''ve racked up 163,000 miles with only a few repairs. I live in Salt Lake City, Utah and conditions around here can get pretty sketchy a few times a year but the car has kept me safe and sound. I''ve also done some very stupid things with the car in off road situtations. From snow to mud to rocky terrain the car has never failed me. I have never lost control in this car. I''m in the market for another car but I have no good reason to buy one. The car is in great shape mechanically and cosmetically it''s held up well. The only failure is the tachometer needle that needs to be tapped into life every now and then. This however isn''t too big a deal considering it''s an automatic. I''ve stopped going to a dealership for repairs after the warranty expired. My mechanic who has his own shop in Salt Lake raves about the cars. When I asked his advice on a new car he told me; "For reliabilty you can''t do better than a Subaru.". The AWD is simply amazing and coupled with it''s low center of gravity and it''s weighty, solid feel I have absolutely no interest in any SUV type alternative out there.d Similar Products Used: You name it. None Terible luck with this car.... It has had a vibration in the front end from Day 1. It has been blamed on the tires so many times that it is now on its fourth set of tires. Which has not helped at all. Subaru of America has been the biggest pain in my side and you know which side. They have said that since they cannot resolve the problem after six (6) Months and Seven (7) Trips to the Dealer (125 Miles one way)that they will try to find me a new car. This new car has been on the dealership lot since the day the fouth set of tires was installed and I actualy drove It that day. This was Six (6) Weeks ago they cant seem to get the figures right ????? What figures you ask The invoice for the Car the Dealer has on his lot that they sold him. Also the Highest dealer bid for my POS. I have had subaru products in the past but because of my experience with SUBARU OF AMERICA I would not recommend their products to anyone. None that I have found!
Weakness:
Really cheap terrible seats-I have developed chronic back pain in just 2 mos.Feels like a bag of rocks sticking in your back-the back pressure is unbearable.seat configuration and slant options are awful.the steering column is too short. The sun visor just clears your nose.If you come to a sudden stop it will hit you right across the eyes. The stereo is horrible. The fresh air doesn''t produce anything but hot air,Subaru forces you to drive their way not how you are comfortable.Bad steering. The wheel jumps in any bump direction the car hits. The acceleration or lack of can get you killed if you need to move out quick. You can put your foot down to the floor and nothing happens, then it will gradually pick up speed and most often not enough to get out of its'' own way.there are quite a few other annoying features but after the previous list who cares! Remember Paul Hogan''s line in Dundee ,"You call that a knife?" Well his slogan on advertising this piece of junk should be,"You call that a car?" This was the first time I ever listened to the BS salesman who said "TRUST ME"and It will be my last.I e mailed Subaru about the problems with this car and got this reply."If your are not satisfied pay a penalty and get out of the lease!!" Good company heh? Anyway take a look at the weakness column .You migt be better off with an 1980''s Honda or the like from a junk yard. Those cars were more user friendly 20 years ago than Subaru is today. It really irritates me to have to pay $360 per mo. for this piece of garbage'' Similar Products Used: Nison pathfinder,great-Ford Explorer,good-Jeep Cherokee classic-Fair |

Strength:
All Wheel Drive, great handling, well designed interior, great safety
Weakness:
Not a high ground clearance vehicle for extreme off roading, back seat is a little cramped for three, cup holder slightly blocks some radio controls. I have owned my Outback for almost three years now, and I can honestly say that this car is everything it says it is. It is hard to find something to complain about on this car. This is the first Subaru I have owned... and I am impressed. The car handles great.. Has outstanding braking power, and good power and excelleration. Visibility while driving is great, and the cockpit area is extremely comfortable and well laid out. When it comes to the SUV aspects of the outback, it excels. While its ground clearance is good, its tight suspension makes it even better off road. I have had my car up some rough roads and it has always done wonderfully. Cargo room is great. I can haul two ice chests and lots of gear for camping trips plus five people. As for Subaru''s all wheel drive system... it is hard to say enough good things. It is simply amazing. This car sticks to the snow better than any other four wheel drive vehicle. It is tough to even get it to slide on snowy roads. I have driven on roads that had 8" of fresh snow, as well as had my outback sunk in 6" of mud off road, and the all wheel drive has always got me home safely. The safety of this car is another reason I puchased it. They get excellent crash test results in all areas. And if that is not enough, I have a real life story that speaks for itself. I know someone who owned an outback and was in a bad wreck in it. They swerved to miss a dear while traveling too fast down a dirt road in the mountains of Washington. He went off about a five foot rock cliff and then tumbled end over end down a fourty foot bank until finally landing on his roof at the bottom. He was unharmed and was hanging by his seatbelt upsidedown. The car was destroyed, but the integrity of the passenger compartment was perfect. He said after the wreck that the only reason he was standing there was because of that car. Let me just say this. After two and a half years of ownership, I would buy another Outback if I did it all over again. Yes, there are little things like the cup holder position that I could complain about, but that is minor to me. This car is highly reliable, and well disigned.
