Strength:

See above - also great storage capabilities in the back. Rear seats fold completely flat and its easy to clean.

Weakness:

None come to mind.

Bought our 2006 XTerra a couple years old from a used car dealership. Best purchase I have ever made on a vehicle. This thing is amazing. Awesome power, passes sports cars on the highway with absolute ease, uphill, downhill, doesn't matter. Very comfortable, quiet, smooth. Great stereo with Rockford Fosgate system and built-in sub-woofer. No complaints!

Off road capability, engine power, cargo tiedown system.

Weakness:

gas mileage at 17-20 mpg, but horsepower at 260. Works for me!

A great vehicle, know that its a body on frame truck before you buy and you will be happy. Goes down the highway nicely, great seating positon and good offroad. Comfortabel for 4 adults and I love the engine/transmission. Good get up and go.

Weakness:

gas mileage very poor (significantly less than the 17/21 advertised)

according to dealer rep, the drive train may not accomodate the new power!!!

most importantly, nissan will not back certain failures during warranty period.

Hello, toyota and/or Ford.

clutch failure at 16K not backed by Nissan despite the fact that:

I have over 40 years manual driving experience.

I have driven three xterras without clutch problems during warranty period

I have never hauled anything with the xterra in question,

I have driven mostly highway.

I am fighting with the Nissan Company becuase My Nissan too is chipping paint. I have 22 spots that are totally chipped away with areas that are bubbling too and will soon chip. It's rusting and the Nissan company first said it's from bugs and the next person told me it's rocks but I have had cars for years and never had this problem EVER! This is ridiculous and if there is anyone out there with the same problem...do a review! This is not right!

Strength:

Excellent power and handling. Like being up high in the seat. Rugged enough for off road and it can pack a lot of gear... especially if you get a roof rack carrier. Easy to operate 2 wheel to 4 wheel switch. I have had no problems with it so far. Bought it Sept. '05.

Weakness:

Rear doors are a bit tight getting in and out. With rear seats down, it can be a little snug up front. Also, the original tires on the SUV, BF Goodrich Long Trails, really stunk... Had to replace after 22,000 miles.

I have the Xterra S six cylinder, six speed standard and I love this SUV. It has excellent power and handles very well in most conditions and because it is a standard, I get great gas milage on the highway... 23 to 24 MPH. In town not so great, but close to 18. It may be the way I drive.

Had a Nissian King Cab, '83, that I drove until '91. Put 130, 00 on it and only had minor problems like head gasket, water pump that usually go on any vehical with that many miles. Gave it to my brother... it is still going with 240,000 miles.

Strength:

drives nice
Love the overall design
The dash board lights up very bright at night.
great vehicle to look at
roomy once inside
Very little to no road noise while driving.

Weakness:

Hard to get in and out of the back seats even with 4 doors as the back wheel sits too far forward.
Back window doesn't open separtate from the entire hatch back.
Hard for tall people to get in and out of front seat without hitting their head.

Not sure whether I got a good deal or not on my 2007 Xterra. The color in and out are exquisit. I bought it based on what I had heard about the overall performance of Nissan, body, and color. So far, I have had problems with the VDC and the SLP. The dealership had to recalibrate and reset both and actually connect the VDC button.
The paint chips extremely easily on the yellow Xterra. It looks like it bubbles under the paint then comes off. I took it to the Nissan body shop and was told the manufacturer is aware of this problem specifically on the yellow Xterra's; however, will not do anything about it as the manufacturer has denied all claims so far. I submitted a claim anyway and am awaiting a reply. Within a couple months of the paint chipping, the metal rusts. I believe within 10 years, my Xterra will have rusted through holes all over it. This is very disheartening as I have vehicles 10 to 15 years old with barely a scratch on them.
I would not recommend this product to anyone who is going to use the back seat on a regular basis.
For the size of the vehicle the gas mileage is about what you would expect 15 to 16 mpg if you drive conservatively.

Strength:

-Sturdy car
-Up high
-Easy to maneuver
-Nice looking
-CD player
-Amazing in snowy weather, never busted out the shovel all season

Weakness:

-Wish it didnt have so many blind spots
-Needs better gas mileage, they estimate 16, which is bad enough but its really more like 11 or 12.
-No cup holders in the back
-in order to properly fold down back seats, the driver and passenger have to practically sit on the dashboard
-gas mileage
-have to drive all the way to evanston for my services or the warranty is void
-Random electrical oddities like lights not going on/off when they should, alarm not working, keyless entry moodswings
-the curse of the moody tail light
-the horrid sound it makes when in reverse as if I'm running over a 50 pound seagull
-and did I mention the gas mileage?

Honestly its back and forth, Got a leftover warranty which helps, but the only good thing this car has done for me is save my life in a nasty accident where the driver side front half was hit. I made it out with a concussion. There was $7000 worth of damage to the car and it was only gone for repair about 2 weeks. It has held up pretty well since then but now its making an odd screeching noise whenever I put it in reverse. Not to mention with chicago gas prices at $3.55 a gallon I'm headed for the poor house! I also had my drivers side windshield wiper die on me in a snowstorm, yeah, that was wonderful, I had to pull over every 5 minutes to manually wipe it, not fun in Chicago traffic. AND my left tail light is finnicky, it works when I take it in, but when I leave, it goes out again. OY!

-1989 Ford Probe-quite possibly the worst car in the universe, especially with no AC and after the power steering died and i drove without it for a year. I now have arms of steel though, thank you Ford, or as my Dad calls it Fix Or Repair Daily

This Xterra is my first SUV, and honestly I'm not sure I can ever drive a standard size car again, I love the feel and the room. (and the power steering)

We have loved our xterra except for one very big problem that we can't seem to get fixed......The airconditioning has gone out FOUR times, all due to the SAME high pressure hose being faulty. We have replaced this hose three times, each time the parts manager at our local Nissan dealership refrencing how many of these hoses he sells and that it is definately A PROBLEM. Now that we are on our FOURTH time, and having a 8 month old baby w/summer right around the corner, I'M FED UP. Nissan needs to correct this problem and either make a hose that won't break or replace my entire system. After searching the internet, I have found that there are many people just like me, that have all paid and paid and paid to have their AC fixed by Nissan, same hose everytime. Why has there not been a recall?? Not to mention the driver window problem that Xterra owners are all experiencing. What is wrong with Nissan?? We have owned 7 Nissans - Xterra, 240 SX, Pathfinder, Sentra, 2 extended cabs and a truck. This will be the last one we buy if Nissan does not make this right. My local dealership, Hudiberg Nissan, has been of no help. Seems to be "my problem" and I need to see if "my part" is still covered by a part warranty so they can give me yet another FAULTY HOSE so I can repeat this process EVERY YEAR until I sell this car. Not to mention labor and freon costs that we are out each time. I am extremely frustrated, this is an obvious problem that Nissan needs to take responsibility for and FIX. So, if AC is important to you every summer, I would not recommend buying this vehicle.

Strength:

-4.0 liter engine is fantastic could be the best motor Nissan has built.
-Great power and torque.
-Extremely reliable
-Great storage space in cargo area
-Plastic cargo area makes cleaning a breeze
-Strong cargo rack on stop with closable storage is very handy
-Plenty of leg room for a 6 foot guy in the back seat
- Plently of room in the carog area and the plastic area makes cleaning everything out a breeze.
-Greets great gas milage on the freeway compared to other SUVs. We are steady getting in the low to mid 20's on the interstate at 75+ MPH.

Weakness:

The rear door configuration makes getting in and out a little tricky. You have to be able to open the door all the way to make getting in and out easier; as you know that maybe difficult to do in some place like the garage.

My wife and I bought the X to replace an aging 99 2 door Chevy Blazer that was constantly having issues. The X has been phenomenal in all aspects. First thing you have to realize is that this SUV is a no frills truck its everything you need nothing you don't. My wife drives this thing everyday and loves the way it handles and how she can see everything by sitting up high. On several occasions she has forged flooded streets in downtown Charleston and has not had one problem. We've driven our X to Key West and to the mountains in NC. The X has plenty of room for all our gear and our 80 pound yellow lab. While in the mountains the X handled all the steep climbs ands off-road trails up to the cabin with ease. By trails I mean off-road trails that consisted of deep ruts and water crossing while climbing at a 20 degree wet slope. This truck has more then enough power to pull and boat and merge on the freeway at speed. We will definitely consider another Nissan product after our X has driven its last mission for us. Buy this SUV you will not regret it.
