With the typically low resale value of Mitsubishi's in general, you can't beat buying a used one for the money.
Weakness:
So far I can only assume the 3.5 would have been a bit more peppy than the 3.0 but......... Bought my first SUV through a dealer friend of mine from a Mitsubishi auction. I'vd had it just over a year now and have had no problems at all. For the money, you can't beat this truck. I have been able to haul some good stuff around and it has driven very well in the snow and bad weather. I would recommend getting the 3.5 liter in lieu of the 3.0 if you are a hard driver as the acceleration is just OK. Inside is roomy enough and I really dig the exterior looks. When the 4 wheel drive works, it works well.
Weakness:
The vehicle is allergic to snow. Had to twice replace parts MB886426 and MB811554 in the last year in order for my 4 wheel drive to work. Almost 700.00 in maintenance in less than a year if I wanted to use 4 wheel drive in the snow. Similar Products Used: Ford Explorer |

Montero Sport ES
Strength:
Reliability, good value for the money. Came with CD player, power windows, locks, tilt steering wheel. The seat fabric is very durable and easy to clean. It also gets realatively good gas mileage for an SUV of this size (20-21 mpg on the highway).
Weakness:
It should come with cruise control--I would have rather had cc than a cd player, but that's my opinion. It really could use a bigger engine, though (I think is has around 160 hp and could really use 200). I've had my MS for almost 4 years and it has been one of the best cars I've every owned. Mine is kind of plain--no fancy wheels, fender flares or roof rack--but I knew that when I bought it. I have spent no money on the car other than oil changes, brakes and tires--the normal stuff. It really seems to be a rugged vehicle. It could use a little more power, though. It's sluggish on the bottom end but does OK once up to speed. I think Mitsubishi builds a very good car for the money. I would consider buying another Montero Sport. Similar Products Used: Jeep Cherokee, Ford Explorer. |

Roomy, sturdy picks up well on the highway.
Weakness:
Wind sound at high speeds. Some rattling in the panel...trying to figure that one out! I am very pleased with my Montero. It feels solid, safe, and looks good! The kids complain about lack of leg room in the back seat. Definitely need a cargo net in the back. Front panel looks kind of plain. Compass and temparature diisplay on mirror is a plus. Should have a car alarm at this price. My next choiice would have been a Nissan Murano but I'm very satisfied with my Montero Sport. Similar Products Used: Jeep Cherokee, Ford Explorer, Izusu Rodeo |

Great in snow. I don't have to shovel my driveway.
Weakness:
pick up is slow if you compare it to a car. I love this vehicle, but I paid too much. The negative equity is killing me, but the vehicle runs great. I haven't even put in a battery and I have over 80,000 miles on it! Similar Products Used: chevy blazer, suburban, ford bronco |

Montero Sport XLS
Strength:
Good ground clearance, good top end on highway, roomy interior for hauling cargo, good sound system, comfortable ride.
Weakness:
low roof line specially for taller people. The transmission is a bit sluggish on take off. I've owned My Montero Sport for a little over a year and have had absolutley no problems except for a leaky hose and a faulty door lock button, but that was taken care of by the dealer. The transmission is a bit sluggish on take off and the roofline is just a bit to low I have to duck my head a bit when I get in. There's a little bit of wind noise at higher speeds but the ride is comfortable overall. The Sound system is GREAT! has plenty of room inside for hauling stuff. nice looking control panel, good ground clearance specially for alaska and it does good on snow and ice covered roads. I guess as long as you maintain your vehicle no matter what make it is it'll run well. SO far no problems, I take it in for service about every 3,000 miles for oil change and a general check over. Everything I can think of . . .
Weakness:
More top end than bottom - but once you adjust to it, the pick up's not that bad Before this, I had a Pathfinder and nothing but problems . . . a real money pit! Before buying the Montero Sport, I checked out every SUV listed in the Consumer Guide, looking for the best possible RELIABLE vehicle - they had the 2000 Montero SPORT listed as one of the most highly reliable SUVS (highest scores in all categories, except depreciation) But figured that's ok - I'm not buying a SUV to get rid of any time soon. . . All I have to say is that I LOVE this truck! Yeah, may seem narrow - but go and sit in a Pathfinder or 4 Runner . . . the MS will feel like a living room compared to one of them! I have the XLS and have found it to be on great truck! No problems when you keep on top of the minor things, like changing your oil every 3k and checking your fluids on a regular basis. (and I don't work for a car mfg). I drive 80 miles a day combined, commuting to work and the mileage isn't any different than any other SUV as far as I'm concerned. Didn't buy it for luxury purposes either, since I also drive 500 miles each weekend in the winter, skiing/ boarding up north . . . I''m also a pretty hard driver - kind of fast and (despite being of the female gender) really like to drive through all kinds of stuff and haven't had any problems at all! Pick up a little slow - but overall, a nice, smooth ride w/ decent 'top end' on the highway . . . Similar Products Used: Pathfinder, 4 Runner, Bronco |

Has power, real eye catcher, comes with plenty for the price, more would be nice but then again it takes money to get more. The sound system isn't too bad either, and plenty of power outlets.
Weakness:
Kinda skinny, could be a little wider. Can pull 5k lbs but because of that should come with a hitch. Radio is hard to change out with an aftermarket cd player, but most don't wanna change it themselves. I don't see what problems people are having with the MS. If you take care of it and aren't rough with it, you shouldn't have problems with it. I've seen many many people happy with their choice, as I am. Some people take the MS off road and they have very minor problems, and they are roughing it. I think some people just don't know how to take care of a vehicle. I'll be using it for luxury, not racing, not off-roading, or anything real rough. So far I think it's an awesome truck with performance and looks. Similar Products Used: none |

The stereo is nice.
Weakness:
Replaced entire transmission at 62,000 miles. Two thousand miles outside the warrantly and despite having it in the shop at 58,000 miles for similar symptoms, Mitsubishi refused to pay for the repairs. Only offered to pay 1/2 of cost as a one time only "good-will" gesture. Now at 75,000 miles the complete transfer case is fried. Cost of repair with a used part is @$2000. The vehicle is forever out of align and my mechanic says, because of design, it cannot keep alignment. Because of this, tires are wearing unevenly and will be replaced after about 10,000. There really isn't enough room to list all the other problems and my fingers are getting tired. This vehicle belongs at the bottom of the ocean. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR. Like so many others I was fooled by the interior and exterior looks. This doesn't really matter when your car is broken down. Worst mistake of my life. If I was able to give a negative star I would. Strength:
Reliable like all other Japonese cars. Power is sufficient if you are not towing a heavy load. Fuel Economy is nice for an SUV nice leg room Not a problem with gear-ratios
Weakness:
Slightly anoying noises, I fixed em though none other I have owned this vehicle for 6 years now and have 80k+ miles on it and it it just gets smoother as it is broken in. The dealership through in a tint job and a free set of rims and some 32" BFGoodrich AT's which are a tad loud but give the vehicle an awsome offroad look. It has nice tourque at all RPM's and the legroom in the back is nice for long trips but it has the turning radius of an aircraft carrier because of the longer wheelbase. Gets up to 22 mpg on the highway and has some noises and E-Brake light problems but all are easily fixed by suggestion from other owners on Montero Sport forums and web pages... "sam" you are an idiot for not knowing how to deal with simple car care problems like Check Engine lights. First of all you don't ask the dealership because they are only after your money. Second, all the noises on my MS were fixed myself for no cost in under 10 minutes a piece. Don't be afraid to ask other ownersin online forums.
