Horrible, awful, lemon of a vehicle. What a dissappointment for such an expensive suv. In the shop 5 times in 8 months. No help with dealership or national ford headquarters. Do not buy this vehicle. Rattles, and so much wrong there is not enough room to write it. Buy anything else.

Strength:

The third seat is great. There is more leg room in second seat than some bigger suvs.

Weakness:

Second row cup holders are too low and shallow. Standard stereo could be better.

I have a 2002 Mountaineer with 15000 miles. Although I really love it I have had lots of trouble with the transmission since 1500 miles. At the moment it is at the dealer for the fourth time with yet again hope that this is the last time. The dealer has been nice but I''m very frustrated. Test drive carefully before buying one.

Strength:

Strong, powerful engine. Good Looks

Weakness:

Gas Guzzler, rough ride, numerous problems, poor dealerships, paint job in poor

Cant believe all the good reviews on this car. Maybe I just had a bad service department but that doesnt excuse the numerous problems. We bought the car with 12K on it. A few months latter the car the car pulled to the right badly, was told need special "bar" that doesnt come with care and two new fron tires $350. Then the brakes lights stopped working twicw in same year. Then had BAD rattle and shaking of console - no one could fix. Numerous recalls including tires, than at 45,000 the differential needed replacement $1800! Now it needs new brakes $500. The stero speakers come on and off as we go over bumps - and the tape play stopped working while eating my favorite tape. Not to mention that when I went to trade it in this week found out that the whole Ford exploer problem has devauled Mountainers and I now have negative $3000 equity in the car.

Strength:

Leather, interior room, moonroof, VERY WELL MADE.

Weakness:

Here we go: by 36,000 miles I have had to replace the fuel pump ($300),(of course the firestone tires), headlamp piece (almost $300) and CD player has been repaired twice.VERY DISAPOINTING.

Beautiful luxury! IF you want plush, the Mountaineer is it. I had done major research into the ride of Suv''s and this came out on top. It is not on a truck chassis so the ride is unbelievably smooth.

Just turned my 1999 Mountaineer in from Lease and got a new 2002 Mountaineer. Everything I had possibly thought that could be improved has been improved. Love the third row of seats and the extra width and length. We are looking to upgrade our camper. Has anyone experienced towing a travel trailer with the new Mountaineer. Looking to tow approx. little under 5000 lb. travel trailer.

Strength:

I love the feel of the truck. It handles great, and I love the two-tone color (black on gray). I love all the toys, the features on the radios (dial my phone, the changing lights on the buttons at night, search features) and I love the room.

Weakness:

Gas mileage. It wil pass everything on the road, but a gas station. The other thing I don't like is the keys. Due to a Theft Deterant System, the keys are 50 bucks a piece. It's a great idea, but the keys are way to high.

This truck is fantastic. I feel real safe in it, the Ford Dealership, Colemans, and Metz Ford, have treated me very well, and it's very easy to drive. I really like the keypad on the door (in case I lock the keys in the car), I like the running boards (a must), and the sound system is way better then the Explorer. I can't complain to much about the gas mileage, I had a F-150 Ext Cab, 4x4 with 36" tires. That got really bad gas mileage. I would highly reccomend the Mountaineer, more room, better handling, and a better truck than the others on the market.

Ford Explorer, Ford F-150. Better than both. I like the mountaineers front end design and look compared to the Explorer.

Strength:

Strong V8 especially for towing, excellent braking, go-where-you-turn steering, really nice fit and finish inside and out, the Monterey package in white/tan is really smart looking.

Weakness:

Interior space. The family is used to the cavernous interior of a Chrysler mini-van so it is quite the cramped quarters for a family of 4 and a large dog (stuffed in the back). The gas mileage isnt great, but hey, its an SUV (we get 16 city, 18 hiway and 9 towing).

Only problem to have on this vehicle was a stuck lap belt fastener which was fixed by a (more) local dealer. There must be something about Ford dealer / service since they lack such things as a waiting room, complimentary coffee, drop off service, etc. In the Boston area these are practically standard services, so servicing the vehicle is a bit more inconvenient. The tires, Firestone Wilderness AT, grip the road and are just right for towing, even with all the controversy surrounding them. Got this truck at a "one-price" dealer, paying just a bit over 28K for a loaded vehicle (most options, including sunroof, mach stereo, leather, temp control, message center, power seats). Was the most painless auto transaction I have EVER experienced!

I would highly recommend this vehicle for its towing and comfort, but because of its rather below average gas mileage, I can't recommend it for everyday or commuter driving. Its a pig at the pumps. If you commute, get a GEO (38+ mpg). If you want a family vehicle, get a minivan (23+ mpg). But, if you have to tow, neither of those will do and you have to get a truck. I can only wish that someday soon they make a minivan that can tow up to 7000 lbs.

Haven't used any other SUV. Bought this one primarily for towing a 24 foot camper due to its towing capacity and better than the rest safety ratings.

Strength:

The styling is uncomparable to any other SUV. I never see Explorers or any other SUVs with the paint schemes of Mountaineers (mine is Torreador Red). V-8 is great on the interstate for passing and cruising. Leather, moon roof, and chrome wheels really dress it up.

Weakness:

As soon as I fill up I have to stop at the next gas station.

I swore to myself that I would never own a Mountaineer after having an Explorer. I never considered Mercury to have a capable truck even though they are basically the same. Some say that the Mountaineer is better than the Explorer as far as plushness but I always stuck up for the Explorer. However, as soon as I drove the Mountaineer my mind was changed. It is a 1998 with 20,000 miles with every available option and I only paid $17,000. It also has the gold package and this is the only one I have seen with gold emblems on the Torreador Red. Add the chrome wheels and I get more looks than any sports car I have ever had. I am hooked.

Similar Products Used:

1992 Explorer XLT. No comparison needed. The Explorer can't hold a flame to the looks, ride, and power of the Mountaineer.

Paint - bird dropping ate through my paint on the hood... Ford won't fix it!

I've put about 19,000 miles on this vehicle and have had no issues, except for a problem with the paint. This is the first product I've owned that a bird's dropping would dissolve the paint... Ford will NOT fix it!

The V-8 AWD 215hp does the job. Nice acceleration, torque, though it is a little loud and only gets about 15mpg city.

The styling is very nice on the Monteray package with leather, two-tone paint, premium sound, power everything, and if you can get it on the A-Plan, all the better.

Overall this is a great vehicle for tooling around town, towing, and hauling family and friends. The AWD drove very well in the snow, but I definitely wouldn't recommend any off-road use.

Go out and give it a test drive, I think you'll be glad you did.
