Strength:

Great motor, strong, quiet, great fuel econ.

Weakness:

Everything but the motor. If you plan to keep this car, buy as much warranty as you can.

This car has been the most troubled car I have ever owned. First week the trans. leaked. Then the dvd player would not eject, the dealer installed a new player and said that MB would send my dvd back. A year and a half later, no dvd. We got a false warning of no head lights. This took two trips to the dealer to fix. Less than a year later the false warning is back. One of the dvd monitors is out now. There is a intermintent hard shake in the steering wheel while under hard acceleration that the dealer has been unable to duplicate, so this is still unresolved. Original tires only lasted about 22k. 32k miles and it is at the dealer every few months.

Looks nice. Very good stereo system.

Weakness:

Mechanical integrity, system complexity, horrible gas hog. The GPS mapping is poor but for $200+ they can send me an update disk.

This vehicle loves the service shop. In the 9 months I have had this vehicle, it has developed an oil leak at a valve cover shorting out a spark plug, been to service for transmission problems 4 times (hard downshift to first), rear bushings failed, CD drive failed, the SRS system failed, home link system and inside dimming rear view mirror failed and the moonroof switch broke. What a piece of junque. Thankfully, it was under warranty but I'll be dumping it just before the warranty expires.

Strength:

Air conditioning system and premium sound system.

Weakness:

See above... The adjustable steering wheel could come down lower. Its a long way down from the back seat.

The SUV does not track straight it wanders. Steering does not come back to center it must be pulled back. Engine idle rough it goes up and down and at the low end it sets up a vibration in the cabin. The brakes stick but can be pushed through and then they come on quite strong and fast. Dealer was no help and MB USA was also no help. Don't purchase this car it does not live up to its so called quality reputation. Customer is not right attitude.

Strength:

engine power, overall reliability, low costing engine/repair parts, gas mileage.

Weakness:

had its share of engine problems, if you can work on and figure out engine problems yourself, it'll be a cheap car to maintain.

In the three years that ive driven this Jeep, it has had a few mechanical issues. the first problem i had was the water pump went out, luckily i was parking it for a while and was able to fix it on the side of the street. about a year and a half later, the ignition coil went out. luckily i troubleshot that system first. it wouldnt start at all and the dealer tried to sell me a new computer module- $500. thanks but no thanks. the $30 ignition coil fixed it. as of current problems, it has a tendency to not want to start when the engine is at operating temperature. however, for what it is, it gets alright gas mileage- for a 4.0 straight 6. the acceleration is decent but with regular tune up intervals, it would be better. the transmission still shifts good with 140,000 miles, but the handling is not that great.

Strength:

solid build, dependable, still looks great at 190K miles

Weakness:

16 mpg, don't like the fact that the cd changer is in back.

After reading so many awful reviews for this product, I just had to throw my 2 cents in. The ML430 has been a part of the family since new. Yes, it has had some issues, as any car does. But for the most part it has been a very dependable work horse. It has pulled horse trailers, been off road, and still been a good looking and smooth riding travel car. It is approaching the 190,000 mile mark, yet still looks and drives great. Currently, the only thing not working is the keyless entry.
One piece of advice I would give to those looking at an M class Mercedes, is to find a reliable and competent mechanic that is able to work on it. If you rely on the dealership, they will empty your bank account and take your first born child. There are plenty of mechanics out there who can keep these vehicles well maintained at a fraction of the cost of a MB dealership.

low gas tank- prone to scraping while on a 4x4 ride

215hp 3.2 v6 doesnt have as much "get-up-and-go" power

Excellent car. Bought it used, 1 owner, lady driven. High miles (highway) 107k. There's nothing to hate about this car. The only complaint is: stopped at a stop sign or so, and turning, from 1-10mph it feels like it lugs, im not sure if it is the awd trying to catch up to the other wheels or what. Wierdest thing getting used to was the window and lock controls being in the center console. windows, locks, doors all tight and perfect. A little harsh over small bumps. Steering really tight- awesome.

Could use brighter headlights, some LEDs/xenons would be perfect. Excellent passenger space. Rear storage is limited. Good amount of wind noise cruising at about 65mph. Average 23-26 mpg cruising at 60mph.

Weakness:

noisy brakes thirsty around town blind spots to rear make parallel parking an adventure

My wife has driven our ML430 for over 91k miles with solid reliability. We average 16-17mpg mixed yet I can achieve 21-22mpg on long highway trips, great for a heavy truck wit big V8! Interior comfort very close to our E class with much safer feel; love the SUV command position seat height. Goes through any weather on paved or dirt/gravel roads. We got over 55k on first set of tires, amazing for this size vehicle. Dealer was great during the 4 yr/50k warranty covering most service (not brakes!) but too costly for routine service Negatives: Rear seat a pain to raise/lower, partly due to poor prep work by the dealer later improved by Prestige Motors under warranty. I would prefer automatic headlights (yet like the manual climate controls, less to break since that has been a chronic problem area for MB cars. Nav system too often choses strange routing, so we use more as an electronic map. And MB charges way too much for updated CD's...thank goodness for eBay! I guess the best summary is that I am looking for another, this time used as I don't like the new design.
