All 3 Lexus dealers in my area---Phoenix-=deny any knowledge of transmissions problems Because my family owns 2 Lexus 300 and one Toyoto Avalon I wrote to Lexus for some relief on this apparent widespread problem and they also denied any problem and hoped I overlooked this "small Problem" when I purchased my next vehicle "GET RID OF ANY LEXUS 300 BEFORE THE WARRANTY EXPIRES.'

Tansmission went out at 84,000 miles. Fluid was changed at 10,000, 40,000 and 60,000. Lexus dealer would only install a re-built for $6000--8,000 estimate. I went to transmission shop and had rebuilt for $3650. There were 5 OTHER RX 300'S waiting to have transmissions rebuilt at that one shop. The shop owner wrote, "The Planet Pinion Pins Walk their way loose in the carrier. This leads to Fracturing the Pinion Gear The fragments caused other transmission damage. The Pinion Retention Method is FLAWED." He verbally told me that the RX 300 transmission has a "Mickey Mouse design." He also stated that Lexus stopped shipping parts to transmission shops some time ago and repair shops go to a rebuild shop in Indiana for repairs part. He said this is a very common problem with the 300's after 75,000 miles, but Lexus won't ackowledge nor help any owner.

Is not a towing vehicle

I have owned an Infinity QX4 and a Lincoln SUV and this RX300 is the best veihicle of the three. It is "tight", handles well, looks fabulous, is engineered almost to perfection, and is a great car. I spent months shopping and researching this model, and it flies circles around its competitors. If you are looking for an "urban" SUV luxury wagon with a smooth, quiet ride, this is your car.

The RX 300 handles well and rides nicely. Exceptional traction on slippery surfaces makes it a good luxury car for people who frequently drive on snow-covered or unpaved roads. RX 300 provides almost as much cargo space as a Jeep Grand Cherokee, but boasts vastly superior ride and handling. Inside it looks, feels and drives like a luxury sports sedan.

Transmission and The dealer Reliable lexus In Springfield Mo

I bought This Lexus new in 1999 We had our Lexus dealer Reliable Lexus do the service checks At 15000 30000 60000 I ask The service manager if the transmission needed serviced he said we did not fall under the special circumstances listed in the manual. At 90,000 miles the transmission had catastrophic failure.
I have owned fords chevys dodge and have never had a transmission go out with that few of miles. Lexus said it had not been serviced properly but it was serviced according to the owners manual.By there dealer. These are not good vehicles to keep over about 80,000
miles. I will never own another.

Lexus RX-300 transmission problem. The mileage is only 96,000, some rear planetary gears imploded, due to lack of lubrication. According to trans. experts, this is due to design flaw. Vechicle had been serviced by dealership for all recommended maintenance service. Transmission failed, but dealership and lexus customer satisfaction will not stand behind their product or even acknowledge there is a problem, due to over 60,000 mile warranty, they assert and refuse to have any responsibility to their product, The parts supplier claims they are selling more and more of these, after market, re-engineered planetary gears for just this U140 trans, only used in the RX-300 2x2 ( due to Lexus continues to use the defective parts in their replacement transmissions.) The part supplier speculates the "keep it quiet campaign" is on this problem and why Lexus will not have recall or campaign, WARNING: the pursuit of perfection stops when it comes to admitting there is any liability to a product design defect and repairing it. I purchased the Lexus based on ratings and sales claims that vehicle will go 300,000 miles ( before any problems like this.)and that's why we have to pay so much more compared to domestic vehicles. Anyone with same vehicle nearing 100,000 miles - BEWARE

Strength:

Almost identical turning radius to my IS300, power lift gate, spacious back seat, tons of cargo room, stylish design. Also, the fact that it came from Scottsdale Lexus. I have never once been treated as fabulously by another dealership or rather any place I do business. I am a young woman (in my 20's) and I felt more then comfortable walking into this dealership by myself. The service department also upholds the highest of values and integrity.

Weakness:

None as of yet

I traded in my 2004 IS300 for this vehicle and am not at all disapointed. Lexus has once again proved their reliability and chic design in this vehicle.

Model Reviewed: rx330

Strength:

-Fit and finish (I wonder how Japanese assembled 330's compare to Canadian assembled 330's) - mileage (23 mpg) - storage - stereo (set on "driver" or "front") - auto liftgate - safety features (airbags, etc) - looks (about the best looking SUV out there, Lexus sold 104,000 in 2004 and Mercedes copied the body styling and wheel styling in their new 2006 SUV). - HID headlights - won't buy another car without them - Variable heated seats

Weakness:

- Transmission lag (sometimes), - Crackling/popping sound from dashboard around instrument gauges - Lexus coated the driver's and front pasenger window so that water runs off and you don;t get water spots. This is a great feature that was on all the glass on my 2000 4runner SR5. I wish Lexus would coat all the glass on the RX330 with this product. (It's kinda like rainX, but much better.)

This review is for a 2005 rx 330, which I purchase via internet sales manager for $600 over factory invoice. It is my understanding the RX330 is assembled in Japan and Canada. Mine was assembled in Canada. I've had mine for 3 months and 3900 miles with no problems. Impressions: GAS MILEAGE - avg via computer is 23MPG (premium unleaded)(mostly suburb/county driving with few traffic lights). But when I divide # miles since last fillup with # gallons of new fillup it is usually 22 MPG (1 MPG less). CABIN NOISE - I have heard popping from the dashboard. This comes from the plastic with chrome accents that surrounds the instrument panel. If you push on this plastic you can hear it crackle. I find if you push all around edges it will re-set itself and the popping/crackling will cease. STEREO - I am very impressed with the radio. Very clear, detailed soundstage. Good highs, mid, and bass. I alternate between "Driver" and "Front" and the speaker setting (push the right big knob). I never listen to the stereo in the "all" setting which I think sound mumbled. Best stock radio I have ever heard. CD sounds incredible. TRANSMISSION - I have read where some people on this site and other sites have complained about the "lag in the transmission" which some consider dangerous. I have experienced this a few times. It happens when you accelerate hard (as if you are turning left across oncoming traffic) and then quickly let off the gas (such as when you see on oncoming car) and then accelerate hard again (when you think you have enough time to make the turn in front of the oncoming traffic). When accelerate hard the second time, it will take a second for the car to go. You hit the gas but nothing, (wait a second) then it goes. Its almost as if the RPM's have to drop before the transmission will engage. I don't drive hard so I rarely experience this, and I am not concerned for my safety. OVERALL: Soft, but firm ride, handles well, comfortable, roomy. This is a SUV, not a sportscar. Those who complain that it is not awe inspiring (are right), but it is not a BMW 3 series. I was close to buying a 2005 4runner instead of the RX330, but the 4runner has NO storage. The 4runner comes standard with a tow hitch, but there is no where to store the hitch receiver. The rx330 has tons of useful storage. I give it 5 stars because I think (if you can get it for close to factory invoice) it is a great deal of car for the money.

This cars has been awful to drive.I have had it in the shop than more than I have driven it . I have had the following problems 1. Defective passenger SRS 2. Continued problems with excessive steering wheel vibration 3. The Dashboards are defective. Every loaner cars has this problem where it the COWL rubs against the dashboard and makes rattling and popping noises. If you can test drive a loaner car RX330, listen to the dashboard. It doesn't happen to around 2 to 3 months. 4. Faulty transmission. 5. Excessive noises from rear cup holder
