Range Rover Classic County
Strength:
Fun and easy to drive, comfortable ride air suspension, Smooth quite running V8 engine and 4 speed auto trans with direct drive 1:1 coupling to engine at over 50 mph, full time Four wheel drive with auto traction control, ABS brakes that really work. Good climate control and sound system, comfortable 6 way power leather seats. Good visibility. Many aftermarket parts and componants are avalible.
Weakness:
Complex electronics may cause problems, mileage 12 to 15 mpg, requires high octain fuel, prone to oil leaks (It's a Land Rover!) OEM parts are expensive I was in need of a mid size SUV for several reasons, 4wd was not real important but desirable, limited funds so I knew it would be used, don't like getting loan for a vehicle. Since it was over 8 years old with 100k miles on it I didn't expect it to be trouble free but hoped I could handle any service it needed and do my own repairs. I read several reviews and comments about it, there were several complaints as well as good things but not really much different than any other vehicle of the same type and age. I have chronic back pain problem and it's difficult to find a vehicle I can ride in, with the air suspension I found this to have an excellent ride quality. It needed new air springs and the seller dropped the price to cover this cost, I was able to put the new springs on myself at a low cost and now it works just fine. The cost of parts can be quite high but with the Internet I'm able to locate aftermarket parts at reasonable prices. I really haven't found any problems with this Rangie, it's very solid, good handling and easy to work on. There are a few slight oil leaks but that's just part of the package, nothing serious but be careful where it's parked, they all leak a bit. The space round the engine is a welcome sight, most modern engine compartments are so crammed it's near impossible to do anything but with this I was able to do a complete tune up with no problem at all. You just can't beat a good ol' V8 for a smooth solid running engine and this is no exception, very smooth running and quiet engine with good low end torque, I'd never think it has over 100k miles on it but it is the original engine. There's a lot of gas pedal travel for off road low end control so it seems sluggish but this is only due to more than average pedal travel, hit it to the floor and she really jumps to life. This 3.9L fuel injected V8 has plenty of power for me. The power seats can be adjusted for the best comfort and there's plenty of room. Visibility out the big windows is very good as well. I have the short wheel base 100" so it's very maneuverable but no bouncing or bobbing down the road as with other short SUV's this suspension is nice and steady. This is a high maintenance vehicle, keeping the fluids and filters changed is very important for long life but I have heard of several owners who have 300k to 500k miles on them and still have the original engine and drive train. As four wheel drive goes this has some of the best designed wheel drive hubs I've ever seen, very strong hubs. Highway driving is smooth as silk, this thing feels like it could drive itself, no vibrations or darting from side to side, just a smooth solid ride that is very comfortable, this was not really designed as a highway vehicle but sure does well there. I'm not a rough off road "four wheeler" but as a landscape photographer the four wheel drive is nice to get to places I'd otherwise have to walk to or avoid completely, the off road performance of this Rangie is very impressive, plenty of ground clearance and with the auto traction control I don't spin the wheels, even with stock tires it does just fine and the air suspension allows good lift for off road while still being a great road vehicle with the lower suspension level. For an SUV of this age and mileage I have nothing to complain about, in fact it's in better condition than I expected. I don't mind buying used vehicles as long as they are in good shape, all the bugs have been worked out and there's really no depreciation to speak of. I say let the original owner get all the bugs taken care of if there are any, take the loss of depreciation and I'll take it from there! It's fun to drive and there's plenty of room for my large format photography gear or what ever else I need it for. Add a roof rack and there's even more space to haul stuff! There are quite a number of complex electronic components that could be a problem but that's just the way things are these days, so far I've not had any problems with it at all. The heat and A/C is plenty strong and it had a great sound system too. The alloy body panels look great and don't get rust spots or holes and the paint job is great, this really looks good and clean for being it's age. It's important to check the floors and make sure there aren't any leaks, water can get trapped under the rubber pad and rust the floor out, I found a few slight surface rust areas on the floor but caught it in time and treated them to prevent problems. The under side was well coated with undercoat so there is no rust under the body. All in all this is the best vehicle I've ever owned and it's held up well for it's age and mileage. This may not be for everyone but if you don't mind doing some maintenance work and really learning about your vehicle as I do it's as good as it gets that's why I give it a solid 5, it's not perfect but nothing is, I just don't see anything I'd want to improve on or change. I'm not a car buff, I just get in and drive. So, I'll leave it up to the others here for the technical stuff. However, for me, I feel SAFE in this car. I like the way it handles, and I find it very comfortable. For purchase, buy a 3-4 year old Rover with low miles and save a BUNDLE of money!
Weakness:
As others said, it is a gas guzzler. However, I work out of my home so I only drive about 10K miles a year. So, I don't really mind that it's expensive on fuel. I love my Rover. This is my second one. I had a '91 County for about 4 years before purchasing this one. I have had -0- problems with my '98, until now. For some reason something is draining the battery. So it will be going into the shop after the holidays. I am looking forward to buying another in 2004. So, I will be on to my 3rd Rover :-) Similar Products Used: I have owned only Land Rover's as far as in the SUV divisions. However, I have owned, Mustang, Mercedes (2), Jaguar, Fiat, Lancia, BWM (2)Accura. My hubby asks if I want a different vehicle? I tell him, nope, I'm a true LandRover girl! |

Roomie, bad A$$ truck, looks great, feels great.
Weakness:
Rust, water leaks in, expensive to fix. You have to be pro-active with preventative maintenance on these older trucks. Lots of greasing. 14 MPG. Now that the truck is 12 years old, lots of stuff going wrong. Feels like a truck, sturdy, not the floating luxury SUV feeling that you get from the Navigator, Tahoe, and Explorer. Ridiculous performance off road…there is no other. Even better on road, as long as it's snowing! Drove from CT to VT several time with ease in 20+ inches. We are always more concerned about breaking down than getting stuck. Inside is very comfortable with door side arm rest for back seat passengers. More room between driver and front seat passenger than most other SUVs. Looks better with gear (roof rack, brush bar, etc.) than with out. I love the look of the classic body style. Strength:
off road capability, classic elegant looks, dealer service, customer service, rarity, only seven thousand built per year, four by four heritage, exclusivity, top line edition, panache and respect for its heritage and appointments, interior, Harman kardon sound system very nice, safe, very safe and solid, insurance rates it very good in terms of safety so easy on rates, fits seven with optional rear jump seats, tried and true classic V8 engine
Weakness:
none other than it could use some HP but that can be all taken care of if you drive defensively The Range Rover is definitely not a vehicle for the masses like the Fords or the Chevys and even some of the import brands. It has a lot going for itself and not just because of the marqee. It is a very capable off road vehicle and has well mannered on road handling for such a ride. Its the only vehicle in its class that feels like your driving a Raised up Rolls Royce yet can climb pretty much anything reasonable you can put up to it. Hummers have there strengths too, but its just too spartan and no very comfortable for such a car esp. when you consider how much you pay for one. H2 was allright but it just seems like a poor attempt in mimicking a real HUMMER the H1. Mercedes G wagen, not bad, but I'd rather stick to the cars which I have. Toyota and lexus have good if no great products but they were just too common for our tastes and didn't strike us as unique enough plus the salespeople were terrible and rude, what a turnoff, which brings us to the Land Rover Range Rover, a tried and true unique, rare and capable vehicle that requires no introduction, new one is okay, but since being owned by Ford now, have to question the lack of parts or parts being used in such a unique vehicle, hope ford keeps it special otherwise it may head for the hills. But otherwise, if you do have the extra dough around, and don't want to be like everyone else on the block, but dont want to be treated like some type of moviestar all the time , though several stars do own Land Rovers, than I would suggest such a vehicle for your taste. A very pleasant SUV that makes the cut for many things. Just be sure, its something you really can afford and be happy with otherwise it can get to you if you let it. Strength:
V-8, mega torque (almost 400 ft-lbs), center differential locking, full time four wheel drive, metal body, ground clearance, absolutely solid.
Weakness:
Rust, electronics, fluid leaks. There is simply no other 4x4 that can even compare. A V-8, permanent 4 wheel drive, massive ground clearance, body is metal not fiberglass, drives like a tank. The Range Rover rides over ANY terrain -- ice, snow, rocks, mud, through deep water -- and you feel like you are just driving down the street. Usual quirks include rust, electronics problems, and general falling apart. But, if you are an offroad enthusiast, there simply is no other option. Makes Jeeps look like toys. The Range Rover is the finest offroad vehicle on the planet, and people in Africa and Australia who go on REAL safaris always choose these. Style, ride (when it's working), massive presence. Didn't really get the chance to test its famed off road ability!
Weakness:
Inherent design weaknesses make it a flawed diamond. I live and work in Angola, West Africa. I bought the car for my wife and even though I had had the vehicle inspected on my behalf before shipping, it's condition surpassed my wildest expectations. It had covered only 60,000 kms, had a full service history and looked so new, I had problems convincing Customs that I wasn't pulling a fast one and misdeclaring its year of manufacture. You could eat your dinner off the engine it was so clean. Cost me US$18,000 plus another US$9,000 in Angolan import duty. Last Thursday, I wanted to push off 300 kms into the interior to look at a coffee plantation I was thinking of buying. So, I asked my wife if I could borrow it for a few days so that I could travel in style (I drive a Terrano II). The first 150kms are good blacktop, the last part of the journey conditions gradually deteriorate but, I hasten to add, others make the same journey in saloon cars so we're not talking serious offroading here. I suppose I did around a 100kms while I was looking round the plantations and then headed for home. I was due back in Luanda at 1600hrs on Saturday. Suddenly, there was a machine gun like rattle and I discovered that the rear portion of te exhaust had suffered stress fractures in two place and one portion was resting on the propshaft UJ. I removed it and stuck the bits in the back. With 260kms still to go, and on a relatively smooth bit of road, there was a sudden very loud hissing noise and I assumed that I had suffered a puncture. Examination revealed nothing wrong so, mystified, I carried on. One Km further on, there was another hissing noise, not as loud, and the rear of the car sank to its bump stops. I tried lowering the suspension and the front joined the rear on the bump stops but could not raise it again. Now I was in trouble. The war has only just ended and the roads are still a bit dodgy. At night, they are lethal. I could not abandon the car because it would have been stripped in seconds. I had no choice but to struggle back to Luanda, a bone jarring ride at 20kms per hour, at night, alone. Scary or what. Took me 14 hours. As if to add insult to injury, the warning panel only notified me of an EAS failure after 100 kms. As if my sorry a**e didn't already know! Now I have to try and figure out what is wrong. I am scared of the only LR dealer as they have a reputation for charging thousands of US regardless Similar Products Used: Classic RR, Disco, Pajero (the one to go for if you want value and reliability), Terrano, Patrol, Landcruiser (the one to go for if you want big!). |

build. gas guzzling buzzard. What is to be said of a 4wd that has interior pillars covered with flocking that scrapes off leaving the interior looking like a kids toys from a kindergarten. On a more serious level this car has had so much go wrong with it that you are scared to get in it and start it up for fear of damaging something new. The worst cime though would have to be the blown air bag in the front suspension. The dealer said they can split if used in harsh condition. We were driving on smooth tarmac and the car has never been offroad. It would not have been so bad if we did not have drive the rest of the journey 500kms to the nearest town with no suspension at all before we could pay them $1200 to have it replaced. Air condition will only work sometimes and then only after you have been driving for about ten minutes...great for short journeys in the australian summer in sydney! You cannot read the aircon display as the lights are all dead. Problems with the brakes. Blah blah blah. Great looking car but build quality s so english they should be banned as a nation form asssembling cars. they can design them all they want as they are great at it....BUT NO BUILDING. Anyway that's my rant. Enjoy your ownership. Adam |
