Rides well. Looks great. Size, not too large or boxy.

Weakness:

Just NOT reliable at all. And all of my repairs have been VERY costly, almost all parts that had to be replaced were dealer only parts.

AWFUL!!! DO NOT BUY!!!
I love the way the car drives & the look but beyond that it is a total lemon. In less than 2 years I have put approx. $3,000 into the car for various brake, overheating and other sensor problems. In one month alone, I had to deal with a check engine light (2x) and then check gauges when the car continued to overheat. Since having the car I have heard other peoples similar experiences with constant probs. If you need a reliable car do NOT purchase a grand cherokee!!!!

Strength:

Nice interior & choice of options. lots of headroom; good rugged Jeep looks. Good sound system. 4-wheel drive works great - cuts through 2 foot snow drifts like nothing.

Weakness:

Bad gas mileage, poor performance, lots of mechanical problems, too much road noise, cramped backseat & lacking in cargo room.

I have not been happy with this Jeep from the day I drove it off the lot. The 10-disc CD changer has had to be replaced twice and the in-dash CD player has been replaced once. I have had to have brakes replaced three times now (with 45k miles on it). The power drivers window has fallen off its' track twice, the passenger side power window has fallen off track once. One wheel bearing has had to be replaced, and the other three had to be greased like crazy to fix a steering/handling issue I was having. The seal around the rear drivers side door went bad after only 1 year, and now the one on the front drivers door looks to be going too. This is all on a vehicle that I have changed the oil in every 3000 miles, had the tires rotated regularly, and done regular routine maintenance on. Did I mention I drive almost an hour one way for service also?? Now the clearcoat is starting to bubble up on the hood. It just never seems to end!
In addition to all the problems, gas mileage is terrible for a 6 cylinder. I owned a Dodge Durango with a V8 that was only 1-2 mpg behind what this gets. If you are running the AC, count on cutting your gas mileage by 1/4! The performance doesn't please me either; you practically have to put the gas pedal to the floor to get it to take off, there is no pick up whatsoever. There's also a lot of road noise out on the highway with all the windows closed.
The backseat is cramped with three people, even if it's 3 children. Leg room is inadequate also, my 3 year old complains about the space. He sits behind me and I keep my seat pretty far forward (I'm only 5'5). I'm also not happy with the cargo space. If you need to put a stroller or other large item back there, don't plan on hauling much else!
On the positive side, it has one of the best sound systems of any car I've ever owned and all the interior features are wonderful. The leather seats are comfortable and easy to maintain. A friend who's 7ft tall drove it once and commented that it has nice headroom for the size of the vehicle. The sunroof is nice & quiet when it's opened. Front seats are comfortable even on long rides. I can't say enough about the lengths the dealership has gone to to assist me; unfortunately, the car is just a bad apple!

I like the looks and ride of this SUV. BUT, THE GAS MILEAGE IS JUST AWFUL. I MUST HAVE A LEMON, BUT BROUGHT IT BACK AND HAD IT TESTED SEVERAL TIMES AND DEALER WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME. I GET LIKE 12-13 IN CITY AND ABOUT 19 ON HIGHWAY. SOMETHING MUST BE WRONG!

The electronics keeps giving problems, the water pumps blew up with only 50K miles on it. The driver side regulator broke. Before I even told the dealer about the door, they immediately said it's a common problem - both the sales and service people. They asked if i'd like to buy a new one - NOT!

Strength:

Weakness:

Would have chosen different tires

No doubt this is the best vehicle I have ever owned (age57). I test drove Dodge, Chevy, GMC, Ford, Mercedes, and Land Rover SUV's before my purchase of the 5.7 Grand Cherokee. I use it for cross country travel and getting around all year in the Colorado Rockies. I have been in deep snow, blizzards, off road rock trails, through streams, 11000 ft + passes in all kinds of weather and the Grand Cherokee performed flawlessly in all conditions.

On highway driving at 75 mph I average about 20-21. At 65 mph I average about 23 because only half the motor is used. Around town I average about 16. At high altitude on mountain roads, I use the lowest grade fuel and average about 17.

The milege is exceptionally good for a vehicle with so much capacity to perform and in fact the real world mileage exceeds most of the touted imports. It is possible to get very poor mileage with a 5.7 Hemi if one drives with foot to the floor however, that is a driver defect.

I have read critical remarks about the placement of the ignition key-that it can be damaged by being hit with the drivers knee-that would be some trick. I am 6'1'' and weight 220. It isn't close to being in my way. I have read critical remarks about the placement of the emergency break handle-well it very easy to use and it has never been in my way.

The Grand Cherokee is not in the same catagory as most vehicles described as SUV's and the lack of clarification confuses the public. It is not a soccer mom car. It is not an import want to be. It is built for four adults who want to go anywhere they want on or off road. It is a special purpose vehicle with extraordinary capacity on and off the road.

Current political correctness calls for an anti-suv view point and has promoted poorly informed reviewers to dismiss the Grand Cherokee 5.7 4WD without really understanding what the vehicle is designed for and what it can do.

The 2006 5.7 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a fantastic vehicle-a classic.

Reliable,
Has every creature comfort available.

Weakness:

Paint chips

I have had my GC Overland for over 4 years and 47,000 miles and have not had to take it to the dealer for any warranty work. It is without a doubt the most comfortable and capable SUV that I have driven. I moved from IL to CO and go up to the mountains on a regular basis in the winter and am happy to report it has always performed better than the other SUVs on the road when the weather is bad.

As for those of you buying a used vehicle, it is a good idea to change all of your fluids soon after buying it, since you don't know if it has been cared for or abused. It is also helpful to obtain a vehicle history

I am not sure what people are doing to cause there rotars to warp so frequently as I have not had a problem with mine. A tip a mechanic gave me a long time ago is to set the parking brake once a month as this will reset the pads to align with the rotors. Also if you are paying for the rotor replacement why are you going to the dealer. Go some where where they will guarantee the work, like Midas.

The 4.7L V-8 HO has performed flawlessly.

The paint has chipped on me as I lived in an apartment complex and I had a neighbor who regularly let his door slam in mine. Other than that I LOVE it.

I recommend this vehicle to anyone who wants a great riding around town vehicle and wants the capability to go off road and not worry about getting stuck. Its not a wrangler, but it is fun off road.

Brakes/Rotors

Really liked the truck alot, test drove it, everything seemed ok. Had it less than a month and noticed shaking when I was on the highway and would brake. Called the dealer and they took care of it, needed new rotors and brakes. I've noticed the paint is chipping away in several areas. Seems to jump on take off sometimes, Brakes make noise after first starting and pulling out. Ticking sound when idling - was told it's the camshaft sensor. Also smoke rolls from under hood when the heater is turned on.

High-end looks, versatility, passenger and cargo room, gas mileage, cool accessories, very comfortable on long trips, Chryslers inline 6 motor (one of the most dependable)

Weakness:

Replacement parts are a little expensive, small annoying tick from fuel injectors, brake dust gets all over the shiney wheels.

I love this car. I have had a few SUVs, but I can honestly say this has been my favorite. It looks great, drives great, its a very comfortable car, not too big, not too little, and gets pretty good gas mileage. Another nice thing is there are many neat accessories that you can buy for this vehicle. I have 73,000 miles on mine and I have never had any major problems with it. I only had to replace the A/C condenser because a rock hit it. It was so easy to replace that I managed to do it myself. I had to also replace a lock actuator which wasn't too hard of a fix either. There is one small annoyance...it has a small tick in the motor. I have been in other Jeeps with the inline 6 motor and some have done the same thing. I have been told by many different sources that it is the fuel injectors and there is no fix for it. It doesn't hurt anything, its just kind of annoying. Just have to turn the radio up louder :-)
