Strength:

ground clearance, cargo space, looks, function

Weakness:

mine needs transmission works but other than that, nada

I purchased mine from a used car lot (nuff said). I had to do a couple of things to make the truck right, but now it is paying dividends. The 4WD works great, especially when pulling motorcycles on the trailer in the mountains on vacation and yanking the jet-ski out of the soft sugar sand at some of the Florida beaches. It never lets me down or keeps me stranded, now matter how nasty the terrain or conditions. As far as the handling goes, it isn't bad at all if you just remember that it is not a camaro which my girlfriend always seems to forget.

I only wanted a Trooper because I had and '89 Isuzu pickup for 8 years and racked up 115,000 miles before I had an accident with it and sold it. It still is running around town probably with 175,00+ miles by now. I didn't want the Rodeo because everyone and their mother has one.

Strength:

-value
-style
-acceleration (strong 3.5L with 4 speed auto)
-build quality
-outward visibility
-features (6-disk in dash cd, heated seats and mirrors, auto climate control, remote locking)
-TOD 4wd system
-excellent radio reception
-lots of room in front, back and cargo area
-excellent warranty (10 years 120,000 miles power train cant be beat)

Weakness:

-poor gas milage (I average only 14.5 MPG but this is with full throtle acceleration and crusing at 75 MPH)
-smallish gas tank (I need refill at 300 miles or less the tank holds 22 gallons but i would like 28 or 30 to get me closer to 400+ miles)
-weak speakers (replaced aftermarket for $500)
-poor visibility out the back(split rear door and tire block visibility)
-soft suspension (leasn a lot in turns)

I got a steal paid invoice plus 0.9% financing for 48 months saving another $4000+. I am satisfied but if I had another $20,000 to spent I would have gone for the Audi Allroad for better performance and style.

The Trooper does well in the snow and would be great to take off road. It may not handle as well as more modern sport-utes but you can't beat this for the money. I think the Trooper has been hurt badly by the Consumer Report hatchet job all the more reason to steal one if you need a big rugged sport-ute and you can afford to fill the gas tanks.

Similar Products Used:

-forester: cheaper, better fuel milage, better handeling
a lot smaller, cheaper feeling. A great car but not in the same category.

x-terra: not in the same ball park as the trooper, costs nearly as much but far less features, also has the old type part time 4wd not for dry pavement. the dealers want something like list price I can't see that happening

Model Reviewed: 4WD S

Strength:

Drivability on and off road, Utilization of space, basic ergonomics, minimalist interior finish, functionality, ground clearance, OEM Skid plates, Durability and visability.

Weakness:

Flat acceleration under 3K RPM at highway speeds. Ability of the AC system in warm (90 +) temperatures. Could have more vents for more effective defrosting without having to crack windows. Service and or replacement parts are expensive. AT trans labors to find right gear when downshifted which requires driver to just manually downshift.

i bough this truck from a original owner who owned the truck since it was new and who put 95K miles on it. You wouldnt have known this if you saw the truck to this day. Although it s lacks the comforts, convienances and power of more expensive and recent SUV offerings this is one SUV thats a truck first and a SUV second. i have driven this vehicle in all conditions you would expect in a climate with four seasons...and then some. I can haul everthing i need for recreation, moving, hauling and travelling.

Since ive owned the vehicle i have made some aftermarket improvements. A K&N Air Filter, Rancho 9K adjustable shocks, Purelli 245/70/16 AT radials, Kenwood 1677 6-1/2 door speaker, Polk 501A 5" rear pillar speakers and a sony CD head unit. This is a good truck t hat has to be appreciated for its utility, and durability before anything else.

Strength:

Interior space, over built components, character, price compared to Toyota and Nissan, surprising good offroad, comes standard with 4.55 gears, skidplates and limited slip.

Weakness:

Chevy V6 is overmatched by trucks weight and aerodynamics, could handle better

When I was looking for a 4 door truck that I could pay cash for, there was nothing that could come close to the Trooper, the Cherokee was my second choice, better engine but half the interior room and felt cheap and creaky.

Strength:

Very sturdy built, it has a comfortable interior and lots of head room. Cargo area is big and nice to place large or small things into.

Weakness:

I have had problems with this trooper since it hit about 98000 miles, it now has 105000 and it has a problem burning oil and rough running. I have replaced wires, plugs and the oxygen sensor in it and have taken it to the dealer 2 times for diagnostics due to the idle speeding up and slowing down, also stalling out on occasion when trying to start into traffic from a dead stop, we were told that they could find nothing wrong other than a leaky valve cover gasket that they wanted 350.00 to replace. I was reading my chiltons manual on the problem with stalling and idle and it looks like I will need to take it into the dealer to have the ECM recalibrated this will cost about 65.00 per hour with no guarantee that this will solve my problems, could take up to 2 hours to recal. this unit or so I am told.I also get about 13 or 14 miles per gallon in the city and not much better on the highway, ( I have a 93 ford 3/4 ton with a 460 fuel injected that gets better miles to the gallon than the Trooper).

My experience so far has been marginal,if I were to do it again I would buy a Ford Explorer with FIRESTONE tires and drive it at 85 mph.with no belts on, but I won't do that as I would not purchase another ISUZU product again either.Do not purchase unless you are a mechanic or you have a good friend that is and they work cheap and they have alot of free time.

Weakness:

AC weak for desert heat Tight back seat(I have the 2door version)

I have only had this Trooper for a few weeks but absolutely love it. This is the 2door model(extremely rare) with every available option. I have taken it on two trips already. One to the mountains and one to the Gulf of California in Mexico. It performed excellently on both occasions. It ran effortlessly through soft sand and steep dunes and never once felt like it was bogging down. The small turning radius is incredible for a decent sized SUV. This truck has 59,000 miles on it and has no rattles whatsoever. Based on all the positive ratings on these trucks on and off road, I expect to keep this a long time. As I said, although I can't base this review on years of experience, This truck ROCKS!!!!!!!!!

3.5 Lt V6 engine translates lots of power up steep inclines. Just returned from 2400 km trip thru rockies and was even more impressed than I had before. Passed vehicles on inclines without down shifting from 5th with ease. Solid ride. Quiet and roomy.

Weakness:

I have only one complaint, the cruise control on my Trooper has needed servicing 3 times (although it worked flawlessly on this most recent trip)
Seats could be firmer.

After the satisfactory experience with my previous Trooper I've continued to be pleased with the new model.

off road performance.
center arm rest standard in base model for 2001.
price/financing.
rear windows roll ALL the way down.
fun to drive factor.
visibility.

Weakness:

rear seats do not lock in folded position w/o using supplied straps.
seat fabric appears less than durable.
when rear windows rolled down alot of vibration inside cab(a front window needs to be cracked to equalize pressure, a power back window would be great).
painted bumpers scratch and chip easily.
cup holders too small for big water bottles.
poor crash test ratings.

I must admit, I'm a truck whore. I looked at the Trooper years ago, but wanted something more hip and cool. Strange thing is I came full circle and back to my origional choice many years later! I think this truck has recieved a bad rap over the years. All the poor press really hurt it's public appeal. I recently took the truck to work and told some collegues about my new purchase, they all replied "yew, why did you get that" or "its so boring". The best part is when I took them all out for lunch their opinions changed upon first glance and progressed even more positively as our journey continued! This truck has loads of personality I was not prepared for. It may look like a box, but like Popeye say's "I am what I am". This vehicle does not pretend to be something its not. There is no lying from it.
I was tempted to buy the more upscale models, but the additional features just seemed like fluff to me. Leather would of been nice, but thats about it. I can't see spending almost seven grand more for fake wood and a compass (oh, you do get a big sunroof if your body size allows it, mine didn't). I recomend this truck highly.

Radio controls could be larger

After 1,000 miles, couple snowboarding trips to Tahoe, I am very happy with a Trooper. The S model with AT and 4WD truly has everything I need, and nothing I don't. Also, I got 0% financing for 5 years, with $0 down, with a price of $240 over invoice; what a deal
