Strength:
Big family hauler. Great travel machine- you don't get tired
Weakness:
Start saving for you xmission-everyone seems to go out 70k-130k. GM just can't seem to fix it. Have replaced: windshield wiper motors, dome lights don't work, driver's window sticks going up, heater/ac blower only works on high, drivers visor stuck in up position, with no motor running-tach/speedo reads below zero, console between seats won't open, 4wd takes too long to engage, back doors open too stiff- kids and wife can't open them alone, overall quailty very poor- wish it was better. Can't wait to pay it off and trade it in. Like the bigness for the family thing, but once I got over 70K miles, the Burb started to fall apart inside. At 107K I replaced the xmission ($1,400.00). Good in snow, and you do feel safe, even if you are stuck on the side of the road. I'm pretty sure I won't buy another GM product, they just are having some real challenges with quality and form-fit-and fuction on their products. It looks good, but I know that somthing is breaking soon. Similar Products Used: Ford explorer, Jeep Wagoneer |

Strength:
Diesel power, room for 8 comfortably, security
Weakness:
Brakes, Air Conditioning Diesel engine produces lots of pulling power, but it''s reputation for a faulty fuel injection pump came to reality for me. GM replaced pump and warrantied for 7/120k. Love the room for family, friends, etc. Easier than you would think to manuever/park, etc. Withstood rear end collision with a semi-truck with only bumper/receiver damage. As I''ve read from others; brakes are adaquate at best. Once you get a feel for the truck, they''re acceptable but is definitely the design flaw that needed to be addressed. Air conditioning isn''t as cold or strong as you might expect-but again, adaquate. Overall, as others have expressed, you get about as secure a feeling for your family and yourself as you could get. Disc brakes all around with the new Duramax and I think GM should have a winner. Wouldn''t have anything else after having a Suburban-spoils you!! |

Strength:
Very roomy. Seats comfortable in front and rear, love all the options, rear air awesome.
Weakness:
air condition motor rattles a little when the rear air is on due to the fact that it runs off it''s own motor. other than that none. I abosolutly love my Suburban. After driving a Mercury Sabl station wagon for quite sometime, the suburban was heaven. I have a husband, three boys and two large dogs. Our whole family(including the dogs) can go all day and still feel refreshed when we arrive at our destination. We bought this vehicle used with 52000 miles. So far it hasn''t given us one problem but we have an extended warrenty just in case. The real key to owning this vehicle is proper maintanance. Oil changes every 3000, transmission servive at about 60000. The regular care does not brake the bank but major service would. Similar Products Used: Jeep Grand Wagoneer |

BRAKES, BRAKES, BRAKES Worst car ever purchased. It is a lemon. Bought in 1999. Brake job within 1 month. Rotors warped, pads worn. Next month replaced alternator. 4 months later rotors warped again, 1 week later rotors warped again. Next month Replaced rear drums. 1 year later, brake job again. New pads resurface rotors and drums and replace brake calipers. Next, alternator goes bad again. Brakes acting up again. Skidding when trying to stop. Hmmmm, does this sound safe with 4 kids in the car. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
I love the power! It has great handling ability, she rides like a small car! Out of all the vehicles that I've owned, I feel the safest when I'm in my Sub!
Weakness:
The damn brakes are not strong enough for the truck itself. I've had a piece of intake manifold gasket tear loose. I had my transmission replaced. Thank God, I bought the extended warranty! I've gone through enough brake pads and soon I will have to change the front disk's because of ware. In order to stop, I have to down shift and brake at the same time. And that's without a trailer. Need more vents added for better air flow. Access to 3rd seat isn't the best, unless you’re a kid. It's easier to climb over the seats. Getting fancy rim's or just tires isn't that fun either! It takes a while to learn how to park! I love my Sub! I purchased the truck new and in December it will be my last payment! The average price for a 1996 SLT 2500 was going well over $50K! Since it was late in the year, I purchased mine for $42K and after all the other stuff tacked on, it came out to $47K! Not great, but not totally bad! It's two tone, burgundy over metallic gray! My son and X, picked out the color! I wanted the dark metallic blue, but I'm kinda glad we didn't, because I haven't seen another Sub with the same color! I've seen some Chevy's, but zero GMC's with the same paint job! Cool! I love to take my kids to Tahoe and go skiing! I've driven through some of the worst snow that Mother Nature could provide! Seeing other wannabe SUV's slipping and sliding, put a big smile on my face! As long as nobody got hurt... That is! As for me! With 4-wheel drive on, we were leading a pack of cars out of a ski resort. The only problem we had was snow building up on the windshield wipers. Every once in a while, we would stop, lift the wipers and drop them to the windshield and that would get the snow off! The wipers could use another slightly faster speed! The overall impression my kids and I have about our truck is, very good! We are very happy with our Sub! I like the new models too! Don't get me wrong, I still want a sports car! But when I'm driving my Sub, I know that my kids and/or friends riding with me are very safe! I wouldn't want it any other way!! Similar Products Used: I had a 1984 Toyota Turbo 4Runner, which was a truck converted into an SUV by today’s standard and a 1992 Toyota 4Runner, both were over priced and not enough power. The only thing that was good, was the maintenance. I didn't have any major problems. |

Strength:
King of the Road with a high ride and great visibility and adequate horsepower for highway operations and beach riding. Ride is superb. Very comfortable with room inside to spare, although I removed the third seat in favor of cargo space. Solid body with a feeling of safety. Vortec 350 runs great.
Weakness:
Worst..hmm? Gas mileage, but I knew that and it is not driven daily. Alternator could use more amps. Suburban owner's internet forum indicates some 96's have had transmission problems. Worst thing may be the hateful looks from "Japan-worshiping anti-US product-anti-SUV-socialists and liberals". It came with 245 Firestone tires which need to be replaced by Michelins based on past experience; I have seen stock 4wd Suburbans go in mud and up sandy hills where they should not go and return, and tires make a big difference as to selected uses of the truck. This is my first Suburban after owning full-size Blazers and Jimmys since 1973; I also grew up with the son of a dealer, and knew what Subs would do. This is absolutely a fine vehicle, and will do all I need to do. Removing the third seat gives huge cargo space. I have nothing but praise. Similar Products Used: Compared to the Tahoe or full-size blazer or a Jeep, the ride in a Sub is much less choppy. If you plan to tow large boats or trailers, do real serious 4-wheeling, or own an oil company, get the 3/4 ton Suburban. |

Strength:
Styling, comfort. Great on long trips, didn't wear you out.
Weakness:
Gas mileage. For a vehicle this pricey, way too many things breaking. Knobs constantly falling off, alternator shot, transmission going out. Friend had a 'burb to and had same problem with transmission. A lot of little things breaking, a hassle to constantly bring it back to the shop to get repairs. Paid in the mid 30's. Way over priced for the quality. Bought GM products exclusively for 16 years (7 vehicles). Am now switching to a Ford product. GM needs to get it together and produce better quality products. Similar Products Used: Bravada, better ride much better gas mileage. However, plenty of "shop" time with the Bravada as well. |
