Some front end issues, bearing issues. This truck ..Love it, may be a bit of a headache here and there..but whats not, welcome to owning a car. If you don't like it..sell it, quit complaining. Lets see, right now..need a front end alignment and a lower ball joint. ooh and why no heat (noticed that had come up earlier, thanks for the tips on what to look for guys) but still driving it. and its at 185000KM (115000Mi). What I have done..Both front wheel bearings (warranty), universals..and a control arm..not too bad..considering what its been through This truck has been ridden hard and put away wet, muddin (gettin puuled out by tractor kind of muddin), random drive-offs into the ditch to blow donuts, towing a dual ATL trailer down a very wet sand road, pulled the trailer though sinking to it's axel. Towed multiple cars out of ditches. Been taken through the ATV trails and bottomed out on multiple trees and sand pits..(no wander bearings keep going).. Can't wait to pay it off anf use that money to put back into it.. oh yeah, took out a wooden barrier with cable connects (8 poles), and a 10 point buck on seperate occassions....could also be part of my alignment problem...Insurance fixed those isseus, no real damage, some cosmetic. Hard to find problem due to crammed space under hood. I bought a used GMC Jimmy in 2005 and two weeks after the purchase the fuel filter went on the truck. Now 6 months later the fuel filter went again on the truck and I am now hearing a clicking sound when I drive and the power steering is leaking out of the truck. I keep up all maintance on the truck but this is crazy. I KNOW a fuel filter should last more than 5 months. What is the deal with this truck. I am still making payments. Ball joints Minor body and interior weaknesses. First of all I'm not a liar, I don't work for GM, and I don't think I'm just lucky. I bought this Jimmy in 2000. It had 35K miles on it at the time. It now has 160K. I've maintained it myself as required. It hasn't been perfect but no vehicle that gets used hard is. The biggest problem has been ball joints. I've had to replace them three times. It sounds like the most common problem with this model. The most aggravating problem was a rattle I thought was in the right side front end. After a little research I found it was a hood hinge issue and was easily fixed. The engine and drive train have been great. Overall I'd have to say it's been an average vehicle repair wise but a lot of fun for the type of driving I do (everything from city and freeway to mountain roads, dirt trails, etc). STAY CURRENT ON ALL MAINTAINENCE. Similar Products Used: Explorer |

Never ending major and expensive repairs! An engine that will fail at 75,000 miles! The GMC Jimmie is the worst car in the universe! We've spent thousands of dollars on repairs not covered by the extended warranty (upper and lower ball joints TWICE, bearings, CV boot, control arms, intake manifold gasket, etc.). Two months after being serviced, the engine blew! The #6 rod bearing spun, and the damage could not be repaired. Now, I have two months left on the warranty, but guess what? They claim the car's coolant system wasn't maintained correctly, (NOT TRUE), and won't pay the $6,600.00 it will cost to replace the engine and radiator. Not to mention the $500.00 we had to pay for the engine teardown reuired for the warranty's inspection. I still owe $11,000.00 on the car loan, even though the car is sitting in my yard with the engine and transmission in pieces in the back seat. I don't have the money to fix it, and I'm paying $700.00 a month to rent a car. There are thousands of other people in this situation. There are class action suits in 8 states due to the DEXCOOL coolant, which destroys GM's badly designed engines. This is a nightmare that never ends! Save yourself! Don't buy a Jimmie! Don't buy a GMC car! Similar Products Used: none |

That it was ever made! I typically never participate in forum's such as this due to lack of time. The only way I found this one was in trying diagnose the latest problem with my GMC Jimmy. I bought a 2000 GMC Jimmy used with only 30,000 miles on it along with a dealer extended warranty. I thought, what could go wrong? Now I know how General Custard must have felt I his final moments. It's a beautiful little truck with great room to lug things around. Being a drummer, that's what attracted me. I just never thought I'd have to be a mechanic this early in the game. 3 day's after I drove it off the lot we had a snow blizzard. I pressed the 4 wheel drive button and nothing! The truck handled horribly with 2 wheel drive in a foot of snow and I've never had issues driving in snow or ice. On the way home I stopped for gas. After I paid the attendant the power window failed to close. Now I'm driving home in a blizzard without 4 wheel drive and my driver side window down. The next day the window decided to work again. The dealer fixed the 4 wheel drive sensor however could not replicate the window problem. The window intermittingly continues to fail to this day. I'm always afraid to pay tolls. 2 weeks later, another snow blizzard. Once again I pushed 4 wheel button and nothing! this time the dealer replaced much more than the sensor and had to replace the transfer housing. I still hear a big Clunk when engaging 4 wheel drive. At 35,000 miles the whole rear-end went. This included everything from the rear axle's to the pumpkin. Thank God for that extended warranty. At 60,000 miles just as my extended warranty ended, both front wheel Barings went. I felt like the kid who's father just removed the training wheels on my bicycle and just as he let go of me, I feel right on my ass! Since the dealer wanted thousands of dollars, I replaced them myself. This year seems much colder than any other year because now that we have record low temperatures, I have no heat! I've replaced the thermostat to no avail. The engine is up to running temp however I either have a plugged heater core or the heat deflecting flaps are not fully working. Now with 85,000 miles on it, the front acts like the wheel Barings are shot again. Not the case this time as it seems to be the output shaft. I'm not sure what it's going to cost me this time. tkeahi has given me great insight mentioning hearing that they plopped a 4300 lb SUV into a 10 year old Chevy S-10 without strengthening the front end components. It makes a lot of sense. The people at GMC should be outright ashamed and embarrassed producing a truck like this. Every time I see a GMC commercial I want to vomit! Now I have the payments of a new truck and the expenses of and old one. So if you want to buy a used GMC Jimmy, Don't because you might be purchasing this one! |

Versitile. Good Power. Good Towing abilities. Sharp Vehicle when adding Bug deflectors, rain deflectors on windows. I get compliments all the time.
Weakness:
Smaller vehicle. My Jimmy is a 1994 4 door Off-Road editon with the high output 4.3L V6 with the towing package. I bought it used last fall. It had 142,000 miles on it. I now have 165,000. Cosmetically, it was immaculate. The only thing wrong was the glove box door was missing. (small expense.) I believe it was owned twice before me. Since I bought it, the only thing that has happened to it is the alternator went out. To be expected from a high milage vehicle. I use it to pull a 5x10 trailer and my boat and it does so without hesitation. The push button 4 wheel drive works great. Drives great at even highway speeds in 4x4. It handles marvelously in the mud, snow, ice, and loose soil. I even pulled a full sized motorhome pulling a pickup that was stuck on the ice. It has tons of getup due to its 200 horsepower engine. I also installed a duel exhaust system with flowmaster mufflers, and a k&n air filter to help it breathe. Even with the larger 235/75/R15 tires, from a complete stop, I can roast the tires and fishtail if I want to. (Very good power although I'm not sure how the regular 4.3s are. The best I've ever gotten for gas milage is 20 miles to the gallon. (I drive fairly aggressively though.) All the Electronics work perfectly. My only complaint is that I'm a bigger guy (250 lbs) and It's pretty compact. Great all around vehicle. I dont know if the downfall in quality came to the jimmy after the 1995 body change or I just got REALLY lucky. From my experience, I am EXTREMELY impressed. You cant beat the value for a used 1994 Jimmy at 3000 bucks. Apparantly, they had all the bugs worked out in 1994 and then switched to the less reliable 1995s and up. |

Nice looking car, attractive to look at. I like the interior, very comfortable, good sound system. The exterior is very strong and reinforced. I was rear ended, the car took a very hard hit, but, there was minimal damage. It is built strong.
Weakness:
This vehicle runs terribly, there are too many mechanical and electrical problems. Many of these problems have happened too soon for the year and mileage on this car. Sometimes mistakes are made in big corporations - I think this car was one of them. Too bad mistakes like these cannot be corrected without so much negativity. I purchased my Jimmy brand new, I paid cash. Within two weeks it had to be towed in to the dealer because it wouldn't start. It took three days before I got the car back. The fuel injectors stuck preventing the car from starting. Another month goes by and while driving with the cruise set at 55 mph the car loses power and dies, fuel injectors again. At this point the car had less than 1,500 miles on it. I took the car in to the dealer for regular oil changes and lube jobs, and I had to add a fuel treatment to each gas tank to keep it from stalling or not starting because of the sticking injectors. At this time I started to have problems with the parking brake not setting. The dealer said that we needed brakes, the car had less than 30,000 miles. There was a recall on the turn signals and hazard lights which caused the car not to have brake lights, this caused a short in my whole ignition system which in turn made my car want to start by touching the steering column. A switch that controlled the clutch had gone out causing an electical short. This happened at less than 100 miles after the warranty had expired. I picked up the car from the dealer and was driving straight home and within eight miles from (remember I just picked it up from the dealer after repairs) the car breaks down again. I was stranded again with eight more miles to go to my house, but you could say I was used to sitting on the side of the road by this time. This break down was the first of three catalytic converters that was in this car. I know the catalytic converter going out was caused by the fuel injector problem, but, they could not be replaced because I was not having enough problems with the injectors to meet their criteria for replacement (remember I had to put fuel treatment in EVERY tank of gas to keep the car running.) The front ball joints had started to make noises around 20,000 miles even though I took it in for regular maintenance. At 45,600 miles the car's tires locked up and the car was dragging two tires, it sounded like the car was being pulled with the brakes on. I got scared after this experience and parked my car for almost three months. I drove my 1994 Chevy pickup that had over 200,000 miles on it because I felt it was more dependable. I finally took the car to a mechanic to see if he could figure out what was wrong. He said the ball joint on the drivers side was in bad shape and would possibly need replacement. He said that there was a possibility that a switch/sensor in the manual transmission was going out and the locking up problem would be off and on unil it went out completely (that makes me feel like I want to drive it.) Just recently my husband got me a cell phone because we were having so many problems with the car, my first day out in the car with my new cell phone the car loses power and dies with the cruise control set at 65 mph. Again I'm waiting for a tow truck. The car needed another catalytic converter, this one that went out had less than 10,000 miles on it, just 11 months since the other one was installed. I really don't know what to think about this car personally I'm kind of scared to drive it for fear of something else going wrong. I now have the third catalytic converter (installed Dec. 2004 - remember this car is a 2001) and don't plan on keeping the car much longer - remember I've only put 46,000 miles on this car, with all the problems I'm having I should have 200,000 miles on it. Beware of what you are purchasing, do your homework and make sure that you get an extended warranty if needed, that is the only way that you will have peace of mind. Not good in the wind Maybe it's just me, or maybe I got lucky, but I think the Jimmy is a great truck. I haven't had it very long...But I've noticed that a lot of people started experiencing problems right away. I didn't, and still haven't. I decided on the Jimmy because I was heading to college up in Marquette, Michigan...They are known for their snowfall, heh. Anyways, I needed 4WD and it was between a 2002 Jimmy with 38,000 miles on it or a 1999 Chevy Silverado 1500 with 100,000 miles on it. I decided on the Jimmy. I've had NO problems with it in the 5 months I've had it. I live about 500 miles away from Marquette and have made the trip to and from 4 times now, thats 1,000 miles each time...So I've put about 4,500 miles on it since I've had it and again, I've had no problems. It's done great on long trips, no problems at all. Of course it sucks up gas like any other SUV, but thats normal. I love the features, I'm obsessed with the temp. thing, hehe. It's comfortable, and drives smoothly. I've only got a 2 door and it's only got 4 seats so being in college and being one of the only ones with a car I guess thats a downside, haha. But really...Like I said, I've had no problems. I really love it. My uncle is a mechanic and he looked it over before we bought it...he warned me about the brake and ball joint problems that can happen...but also said that he didn't see any of those problems. We did a carfax on the car and no problems came up with that. Like I said, maybe I just got lucky. My friend owned a 1995 or 1993 Jimmy until she totaled it. It worked great, and I'm not sure if she had any little problems with it, but during the 2 years I knew her and she had it...She never had any problems. Eventually she did roll it, which is one of the downsides to the Jimmy, but thats also a problem with pretty much any SUV. Being up north with the snow it worked great. The only problem I've had is that it sucks in the wind. The 4WD works great, and I've even gone off roading twice with no problems. I love the big back...And the folding down seats. It worked great when I moved up to college. With a lot of work from determined college boys we even squeezed a futon in there, so it's got a good amount of space. All in all, I've had no problems with the Jimmy. I've kept up on oil changes and I get it checked up by my uncle whenever I come home. I love "The Jimmy" |

Good looking SUV, strong 4.3L V-6
Weakness:
Small interior, weak mechanicals, poor fit and finish. If you like working on your own car, buy a Jimmy/Blazer. I bought this car (used) in 2002, before it started to fall apart. Initially, I was very happy with the Jimmy; it looked nice, fit my growing family, and the engine pulled well. Slowly but surely I began to experience the failures that others here talked about. The first thing to go at 40,000 miles or so was the vehicle speed sensor, a $120 part that kept the speedometer from working and the transmission from shifting. The part is only available from the dealer but is an easy fix for the home mechanic. At 50,000 miles the alternator quit. At 52,000 miles the water pump started leaking and needed to be replaced. At 55,000 miles I replaced the idler arm. At 57,000 miles the vehicle speed sensor quit - again. I'm now up to 65,000 miles and I'm beginning to experience the front-end woes that people here talk about. The tie rod ends and ball joints are all worn even though they received regular greasing. (I'm told that this is due to the fact that GM plopped this 4300 lb. SUV onto a 10 year old Chevy S-10 truck platform without strenghening font-end components). Also waiting to be repaired is a leak that has developed from the transfer case output shaft. It's starting to sling transmission oil all over the underside of the car. I'm surprised since the car has never been used off road or abused. Did I mention that the driver's and passenger doors sag due to worn out hinge pin? Ask yourself this: have you ever owned a car where the weight of the door exceeded the weight capacity of the hinges? Probably not. It's a poor design. If you simply must buy a Jimmy of this era make sure to buy a 2wd. It is slightly lighter, making it easier on the weak front end components, and the wheel bearings are more easily replaceable than those of the 4wd. These cars should come with free stock in an auto parts company. |

Buy it and you'll be sitting on the side of a road waiting for a tow truck. I must say... reading some of these reviews makes me laugh... I'm glad that I am not alone. This car is horrible- I've had it for over 2 years, about to hit 100k miles... (trust me, I'm scared)- I'm looking to trade it in as I type. The car itself is nice, lots of room, good options (SLT model)- very comfy, especially on long trips (I avg 25k per year) However... reliable it is not- not even close. I've kept up the maintenence on this thing like you wouldn't believe, but over the past 6 months, absolutely everything has gone wrong. Only reason I still have it is because I was out of state all 3 times I broke down, had to get it fixed, and after pumping in that much money, with as many miles as I've got, it only makes sense financailly... long story short- GM should give a recal.
