Strength:
Like the security of knowing if there is bad weather am high enough to go through water. Seating is more comfortable than my 1993 Explorer was.
Weakness:
Ford Company nor the dealership Don Bohn Ford will admitt this is not normal. The cold air hitting my feet/legs causes an aching pain after a time period. Unfortunately live in the far south and must have air conditioning system working. I purchased a 2005 Ford Explorer in Janurary. This month used the air only to discover the setting switch to have the air flow through the dash only does not work. Cold air blows on my feet no matter what setting I put it at. I would NEVER have bought the vehicle if I had known this. Strength:
A good running 5.0 V-8 is its strong point with great all-wheel-drive for winter driving. Gas milage was improved with a K & N air filter. 18 to 20 mpg on highway is normal. Around town, 15 mpg is normal. The engine uses zero oil between changes. Typical for Ford engines: they run well even past 100,000 miles.
Weakness:
Ride is firmer than I choose but Ford made them better riding in 2000 according to Ford Service Manager. I replaced the shocks at about 60,000 miles with Monroe Reflex and slight improvement in ride quality was made. In 2002, we bought this XLT used with about 45,000 miles. The Mercury Mountaineer was our first choice but this XLT had the same features for about $2500. less money. Now it has 98,000 miles. Other than routine oil changes, replace tranny fluid, flush radiator, and replace tires and brakes this Ford has not seen the inside of the Ford Garage. When this Ford has 140,000 miles I'll sell and buy a Mercury Mountaineer. Simply because I like the grill better. Similar Products Used: Ford E-150 conversion van and Ford ZX2 sports car. I like Ford products because they run a long long time with just normal maintenance. Our E-150 still ran well at 175,000 miles. Parts are affordable and downright cheap compared to Mazda or Mitsubishi. |

Ride QualityHandling: For this size vehicle the ride is amazing. Power: 4.6 V8 moves this size truck with authority.
Weakness:
Numerous issues: Thought Quality was Job #1 for Ford.....guess not. Has a healthy appetite for unleaded. No matter how you drive it whether it be in town or highway........15mpg...no more no less. The 4Runner at least returned 22 to 25 mpg on the highway. Engine: Try to let it REV to pass or get up with traffic quickly and the motor makes some very unhappy noises. Depreciation: If I put how much this truck has lost value I would end up getting mad again......it should be a crime!! Being that I am a Ford supplier I decided to use my X-Plan to replace our high mileage 1996 4Runner SR5.....big mistake. About a week into ownership we started having issues with this truck. At first it was only little things, Trim, CD Player, annoying squeal when accelerating (turned out to be corrosion on the AC pulley). But then 8 miles before the factory warranty was up I took it in to have a vibration in the rearend checked out. Had to have the entire rearend replaced...thankfully under warranty. Then things with the liftgate started to happen. First the color keyed trim accross the bottom of the back glass split from top to bottom right through the Ford emblem. Now we are waiting to have the time to take it in to have the rear hinges replaced under warranty. Ford Explorer Sport XLS
Strength:
1. High driver's position 2. Lots of room for stuff 3. OK power with 5 spd manual 4. 4wd has good grip 5. Solid Brakes 6. Sporty looks with newer grill and fenders.
Weakness:
1. Bouncy suspension. 2. Alleged inability to install cruise control aftermarket (which I could do with my Neon). 3. Tight back seat 4. Very poor city mileage I purchased my first SUV from the "B Lot" at Ford Corporate Heasdquarters with the help of my brother in law. We were just browsing as I wasn't planning to buy until later, but after seeing the price and relatively low mileage (8200) for a car less than a year old, I couldn't resist giving it a try. Overall, I am pleased with my Explorer and the service I have received thus far. It was quite the transition after driving a Neon for 4 years. Given that it is a 2 door XLS, I accepted that it had limited back seat/extra features, but I was disappointed that I couldn't add cruise control after the fact. Shortly after buying the Explorer, I had an opportunity to take a new job and had to move. I was frustrated that I could not rent a trailer with U-Haul, so I bought my own. It has taken some practice, but I have figured out how to load the trailer and adjust my driving in order to avoid dangerous situations. I am also investigating ways to stiffen the rear suspension with aftermarket accessories. Although I am pleased with the vehicle overall and it has met its "utility" purpose, I will most likely buy a smaller SUV or Crossover vehicle (eg. Ford Freestyle) next time. Seems to be better quality than Fords past
Weakness:
The Climate control mode. When set to dash only, air "leaks" out through the floor vents as if set to bi-level. Freezes your feet when AC is running. Had a 1996 Taurus that did the same thing. It's not my particular truck, either. Checked another '05 on the lot (same exact truck, same options) and it does the same thing. The service manager checked it out and his response was "hmmmm, that's strange". Had him check for TSB's, there are none. This is actually a company vehicle, I would actually never bought a Ford just due to this one flaw. It may seem trivial, but if you live in an area that is 80+ degrees F for 8 months out of a year, you wouldn't like having your feet freezing all the time, especially when I drive 40,000 miles plus a year. Had to form a makeshift "plug" from styrofoam, and have to remove it every time I need to use the heater So far not a single problem other than the one that I'm writing about Similar Products Used: 87 Taurus (same problem) 96 Taurus (same problem) Do all Fords do this? |

Strength:
Gas mileage, room, comfortable going down the highway, great A.C./Heater, looks and stero.
Weakness:
I had a roaring noise when I would get uot o the highway and took it in to be looked at. It took them about 4 times before they finally got it fixed, it was some kind of seal, nothing much but agravating to hear the humming all the time. The A.C. roars when its been on for awhile, not hurting the vehicle it just makes a load noise. There is a lot of road noise driving this car and I believe it is the tires. I got new ones and it stopped for awhile but seems like when the tires wear a bit then the noise is back. This vehicle is one of the roughest riding I have ever had, hit a bump and it will bounce you pretty good. Sometimes the door ajar light will stay on for no reason. The arm rest/console will break if you let your grandkids set on it, mine did. Every once in awhile the transmission will hesitate before going into reverse but I havent had it serviced since day one. The rear windshield wipers will work when they feel like it. This has been a pretty good SUV so far. It gets great gas mielage, around 22 MPG. It doesnt use a drop of oil and I have let it go 6000 miles before changing it, not smart but I have done it. It has never failed to start and never broken down on me. I have abused it and it just keeps going, looks good too. As far as reliability this has been great. Explorer Sport Trac XLT Premium
Strength:
Versatilty, handles trailers easily, good on gas, extremely comfy to drive. Great for long trips and usefull for carrying expensive tools with the locking, hard, tonneau cover. Easy entry 4 doors.
Weakness:
The tires ! Ford should be ashamed of the terrible Goodyear Wrangler tires. Get Pirellis ! or Michelins First, the "Sport Trac" should be in a seperate category. It IS an SUV, it IS a truck. And it IS fun to own and drive. There are some quirks with the vehicle in that it has a long wheelbase at 126", so tight turns are tricky, but rides great on the highway. Most are sold with all of the "toys" or options and that's what the truck is all about. Above average 4WD system, switches from a RWD only to 4WD. With the limited slip diff., you'll wonder why you need 4WD. Gas mileage depends on the driver. 750KM or 450 miles on one tank are probable at slightly above posted limits. The interior is a hybrid truck/car with very good leather seats, well placed instruments and a terrific sound system. and rubber floor covering, so living in the country that makes sense! Would I buy another, yes ! This is my second one, and it has more toys and a different colour. Similar Products Used: Explorer 2dr Sport, Explorer 4dr, Explorer "Sport Trac" |

small reciever hitch is stock without V8 We bought the vehicle new and have loved it ever since the day we bought it. It gets wonderful gas milage and handles better than any other suv we have owned. We have yet to have a problem with it. Also Ford services have been awsome to us. We opt for the V6 so we could save on the gas prices and got to tell you the power is great for a V6. 4x4 works great also. Ours has 4x4 auto, high and low. gas mileage good for what it can do strong auto-windows, great motor that can be easily worked on and updated yourself. GREAT 5 spd manual tranny.
Weakness:
Oh lots...you just gotta keep the vehicle up and you will get 350k like me. Probably the worst is the front end and sunroof (leaks) but only honda makes one that doesnt. NO it wont roll over if'n you dont drive like an idjit...though I do off road anyway and it hasnt happened yet After 26 some-odd vehicles owned, this one is quite impressive although the reviews on it leave me shocked....i mean its a comic-show on some... my favorites are (should have bought the honda odyssey) or (the ride is bumpy) or the best (the gas mileage is bad...) ummm...what are these people doin with a SUV anyway??? Read through the lines people...especially the guy that has been through 3 engines on a 1997 model???? Maybe if he put oil in the engine...uhhhh? ANywayzzz...my first american car since a ford maverick waaay back when...and that car would NOT die...still runnin today if not smashed. Anyway yes, toyota/nissan are better in engines and reliability but have not touched this unit for comfort or ride quality (though im talkin bout the imports pre-1990) and the steel is much thicker on the old ford which yes gives it a superbly hefty weight. 354000 miles on this and it runs like new...no foolin...the 4wd is awesome, the 5 spd manual is tight and crisp and everything works as it should...except the radio only gets so loud you can barely hear it..so what..its 13 years old. Whats great about this vehicle is that its held its looks (no paint peeling, dents (foreign vehicles dent so easy!) through it all and handles surprisingly well for a bigrig....course I loved my mazdas toyotas and nissans but they were all tin-canny and unsafe-feeling and ALL showed excessive drag when overloaded...not this v6 (its only a v6!) and I have hauled thousand-pound plus plus trailers with ease. The oil is easy to change...the plugs are almost easy to change and everything else is great...awesome a/c. Oh yeah...to the guy that said he replaced his firestones with bridgestones for a much better ride..THEY ARE THE SAME MANUFACTURER and the same tire ka-nucklehead! Anyway, you only need to look at michelins or kumhos for either end of the price spectrum...maybe yokohamas but...I digress. a great ride for a great price and FOOLED YA...i really own a MAzda Navajo....which is an explorer with better wheels/grill. N/A I had a constant Check Engine light immediately after starting. I took my truck tp Auto Zone for the free engine dianostics reader. Code P0401 was the only code, "EGR Insufficient Flow Detected". The good ole folks at Auto Zone reset the code and Check Engine light. The same problem reoccured in less than 24 hours. I searched the internet for similar problems and found that people were changing EGR Valves and DPFE Sensors with little sucess. Using a Haynes Manual, I took off my EGR Valve and cleaned/inspected it for proper operation (if the diaphram wasn't leaking and provided suction). My EGR Valve had little to no carbon build-up on the inside of it. I then took a wire brush and cleaned/vaccumed out that part of the manifold housing that the EGR Valve is attached to(it was clogged with carbon). My wire brush broke through completely on my second attempt to clean my manifold. Then I changed my DPFE Sensor and took off the EGR Pipline or Tube along with the two rubber hoses and cleaned them out with compressed air. My original DPFE Sensor was clogged with large amounts of carbon. After reassembly of everything, my truck ran much better at idle. Before it was loud and took a couple attempts to start initially. The Check Engine light didn't reset automatically. So I went back to Auto Zone to get the Check Engine light reset again. I've been driving my truck for 3 days plus now and I haven't had any problems and it is running great/burning gas at a considerably lower rate.
