Strength:

Good room/payload capacity, reasonably priced, adequate ride. Apparent good value for the dollar except for the TOTAL LACK of QUALITY and SUPPORT!!

Weakness:

Ford quality and support????? Its no wonder they are in trouble and they have just lost another customer.

2002 Explorer XLT. Bought this thing used with 31,000 miles. Never off road or abused and now has 75,000 well maintained miles. Where to begin? A/C problems from the day I took it home. Took 3 visits (the last to another dealership) to get fixed. Only 1 key when delivered, charged rediculous price for 2nd key. Two minor problems dealer promised to fix and never did. Another dealer fixed under recall. Crazy computer, doors auto lock sometimes, sometimes you drive 30 minutes and then they decide to lock. Door open light stays on even when all doors are securely closed. OK, when it goes off warranty. Broken window lift, $300. Re-built differential, $900. Brakes and rotors, $800. Transmission failure (I should have researched better before I bought it) $3100 for a remanufactured unit with 36 mo/36,000 mile warranty!! Have been told by a friend in the auto parts business the radiators also tend to fail from corrosion at about 75K miles. I would love to dump this piece of crap but have so much in it have no choice but to drive it. Probably no one would take it anyway. All of these major problems known by Ford (5R55W trans failures, brakes and rotors, differential failures, radiator failures) just beg for a class action legal action. Have bought Ford products for years. Mainly Taurus and a 1999 Mountaineer that was good dependable basic transportation at a reasonable price. I will have my payback by never buying another Ford procuct.

Model Reviewed: Explorer XLT 4x4 V8

Strength:

V8 power is good. However, much better in new model. Center storage console and bin. Interior size. Rear liftgate is better than newer model. Fairly quite & smooth ride. Purchase price used.

Weakness:

Gas milage. Lots of squeaks/rattles already at 28k miles. Interior door releases are goofy. Angled sun visors? Seat belt height adjuster to low. Only 17" wheels available. No recirc air on standard HVAC controls!

Purchased this Blue Oval Certified SUV with just 15k miles. Ford's idea of 'certified' is a little different than the Japanese auto makers. Ford's standards are much lower, but who doesn't know that already. I went with a used 2004 over a used 2006(newer design) simply because of the interior door pulls/releases. Who ever approved that design should be fired! Maybe that's why I haven't seen to many of the newer models out there. Back to my 2004, V8 is just ok. I would recommend the V8 just because the V6 is a joke in the performance catagorey. I now have about 28k on this truck and I'm noticing several squeaks and rattles, especially from the doors. That's bad. The seat belt height adjuster is to low. 2nd/3rd row seats don't fold flat. No recirculating air button on HVAC. It's only availble on auto climate contol. So, unless you like breathing gas fumes in traffic with the windows up, you have to turn it off. Which is really sucks in the winter. Overall quality is pretty low but you get what you pay for. This truck was still about $5k less that a Pathfinder or 4Runner. My 1st and 2nd choices.

Strength:

Smooth ride and quiet. Comfortable seats. Lots of room. Nice space in 3rd row.

Weakness:

Door handles - somebody screwed up here on the review line. 2007 have added a grab slot so the problem is gone. Shift on console - again, somebody sleeping on the design board - lose all the space for "things" (like a cell phone).

Drive it . . . quiet, smooth and tracks like a dream.

My old one was a '96 and had 177,000 on it. Doesn't compare to the 2006. V8, leather, sunroof with 3rd row seat. If you can live without a marquee badge on the hood . . . take a test drive. Nice size, nice ride and solid.

The real test isn't the first 15,000 (so far great) . . . it is what happens after 150,000. Hope it compares to the '96

Truck is strong in every way, styling, performance, fit and finish, comfort, and handling.

Weakness:

None

Purchased truck about a year ago. I drove every midsize SUV on the market, Envoy, Trailblazer,4 Runner, Durango, you name it, and I decided on the Explorer for the styling, ride, and power. Vehicle has preformed flawlessly. No problems what so ever. Ride is very smooth and quiet. Engine is very smooth, quiet, and responsive (4.6L V8)even when towing my Ski Boat. Exterior styling, fit and finish is excellent. Truck turns heads where ever you go. Interior is very roomy, lots of storage, leather seats are firm but comfortable. Power seat option make driving a pleasure, even on long trips. All controls are conviently located and easy to operate, and interior styling is as classy as the exterior styling. Fuel economy is OK, 20mpg to 22mpg on the highway, 15mpg to 18mpg while towing boat. This is the first Ford vehicle I have owned in over 20 years, but it will not be the last. Because of the experience with my Explorer, I just replaced my GM pickup with a new Ford.

none, other than ride, but hey its a truck

It's been a great SUV, I purchased it 10/2001 with 19k on it. Now I've got 173,000 miles on it. Only problems 1 wheel hub needed replacing and thermostat and anti lock sensor. Thats it, not bad for 170K. I've been religious about oil changes, transmission service, brakes and tires. It doen't burn oil and shifts nicely.

I just bought a 2003 XLT with 19k for 16k. My son in college will get the old one and drive it into the ground. He's thrilled ot get it after driving around in a S10, can you say nickle and dime.

There are a lot of little features here and there that make riding this car a very pleasant experience.

There is extra room, which comes in handy for activities such as grocery shopping, moving, etc.

Provided that the previous owners took care of it, it's quite a reliable car.

Weakness:

GAS-GUZZLING. This car is constantly gas-starved -- it's almost like constantly feeding a fat cat whose sole purpose in life is to eat everything in sight.

Shock absorbency? What shock absorbency?

Likelihood to tip over in a serious car accident.

Not very powerful for its size (e.g. - lackluster pickup).

Overall, very polluting and fuel-inefficient.

I bought this car from a fellow employee, so she cut me a very fair deal. Only she and her mother had owned the car, and they took excellent care of it. I was in need of a car after my 20-year Oldsmobile started acting up, so I took them up on this offer. It had a little over 132,000 miles on it when I bought it because the previous owner used it to commute to college.

Like another reviewer said, the care given by the previous owners is crucial; therefore, I haven't had any major problems so far. The leather interior is nice, and all of the other features are too. There's a sunroof that opens -- for what? For waving at the people behind you, of course. There is a 6-disc CD changer AND a cassette player. Overall, the little features like this are really sweet and make riding in this car an enjoyable experience.

Of course, I do have some complaints about the car. My "Check Engine" light has been stuck on since I got the car, and the previous owners said that they had the same problem. My biggest complaint, however, is the simple fact that this car is an SUV. SUVs are renowned for their damaging effects on the environment and their overall wastefulness, and this car is no exception. I go through gas like an Olympic runner goes through bottled water. The disgusting exhaust released from this car makes me feel guilty for driving it, but as a poor college student, I don't really have much of a choice but to do well in my classes and hope to get a more efficient car someday in the future. Being an SUV, I'm also concerned about it tipping over should I make a very sharp turn or get into a serious car accident. Due to these concerns, I use my mother's fuel-efficient Saturn to commute to college. I have no idea how the previous owner used it to commute to college without starving herself to pay for gas.

In the end, I don't regret buying this car because of the great deal that I got. Most other people in their lower 20's get stuck with rusty hunks of junk that barely run, so I consider myself lucky to drive a car like this. However, once again, I won't buy another Explorer in the future due to its overencompassing ineffiency.

intuitive interior with status computer, all power options are fine, lots of toys, good capacity and decent mileage with the 4.0 v6

Weakness:

the ride itself...not very stable, the front suspension seems weak and cheap.
isn't very powerful, not much throttle. leather seats did not come heated, and I dont like the fact that the driver seats dont have separated head rests.

bought about 5 months ago...came with new tires/changed belts/brakes/hood arms...The first 3 months were reversing my thoughts of ford, it was actually running strong without any problems, mind you there were little issues with the dash lighting impartially and then the check engine light came on and off until I realised I was low on power steering fl. I have to top it off about every month now. The engine light was gone for a while and now it's prominent. There is an obscure noise from the engine whenever I push the gas petal(like cans going through a sredder), the brake petal stutters periodically in normal driving conditions(abs), the shocks feel as though they are about to collapse whenever I go over even miniscule bumps, now the dash only lights up half making it unable to see my speed at night or the fuel gauge.
The hood will not stay upen even with the new arms.
I'm affraid to take it into the shop in fear of what else could be wrong under the hood, good thing my cousin is a ford mechanic...
I think I'll stick with GM trucks and japanese vehicles when I get rid of this

Just the starter failing on me

I bought this ford because it looked nice and the 4.6l runs great. Plus it has plenty of room with that 3rd seat. I've been taking it long distance for about 1 year and the only problem I've had so far is the wiring of the starter broke off.

Everything

Where do I begin? I've read the other reviews and strangely enough, they pretty much all have happened to me. Thank God, My uncle is a Ford service mngr.(fixed at cost). It has 63K on it right now. I've had the tranny fixed twice, the speakers fixed, the brakes twice, the tires badly worn on inside of tire even though allignment was fine. The whistling, yes it has happened to me also, especially when it gets cold out. Yeah for me, it is almost winter in Chicago, I get to listen to it again for another 5 months. The ABS/4X4 High sensor has gone out 3 times. It is going in tomorrow to have it fixed again. The light just starts blinking and then just stays on until it's replaced. Two new things are starting to happen now. I noticed a drop of oil on my garage floor, so that means more money and now along with the whistling winter sound, I'm starting to hear the wind noise really bad even though the windows are up tight. I think the back door seal is going bad. The only thing that is good about this vehicle is the looks and the seating, but by reading the other reviews, I'm sure the paint will start to bubble and the seats won't go up and down eventually. Hopefully I can $h1tcan this truck before it happens. Of course I'll have to keep it for another couple of years due to the resale value that sucks. I paid 31,100 in 1/04, now 33 months later it is worth 10,500 for a trade in. Lucky me, I still owe 18,000 on it By the time I'm even on the trade amount, it'll be dead or paid off or both. P.S. The gas mileage stinks too. 12-15mpg @ $2.69gal

I bought this used with 23,000 miles on it. First year it was a good vehicle. After that I have had more problem then I should for the year it is. I had the driver door lock assemble worked on twice. The IAC sensor went has went out twice. The dealer replaced it 2 years later it went out again. There is omething really wrong with the suspension on drivers side. A bubby of mines mom has a 1998 and it does the same thing. The theromstat went out just out of warranty. The check engine light is on. Took to a different dealer. He said that I either have a bad wire or the computer is going bad. At $75/hour I don't the money to get it fixed. The gas mileage has went way down since this happened. This is all the major problems that I could think of. Not to mention all the recals and minor problems. I have had this vehicle in the shop at least twice a year since I bought it. Wife and I won't buy another.
