-Cost of parts You can't beat the car for the price. It's the most fun car I've ever driven. The combination of great acceleration, handling and braking make it an exciting car to drive. Slap in a couple performance chips and it gets real fun. I've driven all cars that you think are comparable and let me be the first to tell you that they aren't. If you get one, you won't regret it. Strength:
Handling and braking are far and away the strengths. I have the non-turbo 8 valve, so, at 165hp most modern sedans out power it, but who cares, they can't hang in corners and turn the whole experience off with the braking. On the power, it's not a Mustang. I mean, dropping the clutch at a red light won't get you much, and if that's what driving is to you, then consider a Mustang or something. If curved roads put a smile on your skull, then this is your car. The weight is nearly 50/50. The transaxle is in the rear, the battery is well behind the front wheels and your butt, when seated is towards the rear of the car. Very well balanced, the best steering car I've ever driven. I was surprised at the build quality. For the el cheapo Porsche, I think it's built pretty well, not fit and trim so much as body integrity. Puts a racy Acura Type R car to shame.
Weakness:
The valve train is "interference" design. If the timing belt breaks, so do your valves. That is a paranoia of sorts. They are not unreliable, but you can't ignore the maintenance or you will pay, so it's a sports car in that sense- you have to fuss with it a few times a year. Fun to drive. The turbo and S2 and 968 models are much faster, but with current 8v 944 NA prices around $4-$6k, if you can still find a 2-3 owner with 90k miles, you'd be buying a lot of fun. Porsche 944 Turbo (951)
Strength:
Gobs of horsepower. Approximately 265hp with set of Autothority stage 2 chips($399.) 100% Galvanized body panels means no rust ever. Beautifully balanced chassis. Excellent brakes. Cavernous rear hatch. Precise steering.
Weakness:
Considering that turbos were selling for $47k back in 89 some interior materials seem a bit chintzey. Switchgear seems more in line with what I'd expect in a Mazda Miata. Although a fairly reliable car some repairs can be extremely pricey. Poor choice of aftermarket wheels. Resale value poor so you don"t want to sink tons of $$cash$$ into one of these. The key to buying a used Porsche 944 Turbo is to find a one or two owner machine with a complete service history. Also avoid the $5,000 (bargains) they rarely are. In most cases one owner Turbo's for under $10k are readily available. Paying mid to upper teens $$ for a Turbo doesn't make much sense either unless you plan to keep it for a long time because you're going to take a bath at resale time. Repair costs Highly recommeded to people that appreciate a fine German sports car. Expensive to maintain but worth it. The very best car I have ever had. If you like the sound of a strong engine, put the seats back, windows down and sunroof up then this is your car. I bought mine at a great value, put a few grand into it to make it look brand new and WOW, what a machine! Not for the teenagers. They just wouldnt appreciate it. Mine has 100,000 miles and purrs like a kitten. The car is in mint condition. If you have one then enjoy. If you dont yet then what in the world are you waiting for. Maintenance cost, Locally locating parts is difficult, Heres my story and hopefully it will have a good ending. I bought the car from a guy here locally even though the car was an original Florida car. He was in a pinch to sell it so he took 4k for the car. Which I knew the car would need some attention with him selling it at such a low price. The first obvious points to getting the car so low was that it was an 86 Turbo with 140k on it and the paint was starting to chip and was faded on top. But the car had pretty decent service records on it (complete factory service until about 98k). Well I buffed the paint out and it shines like new but I will still have it painted because the flaking is still there. The car had other records from the second owner for the timing belts waterpump, distributor and wiring, hoses and valves ,seals and a complete clutch package for 2k done at 120k. The guy I was buying it from had also done the front end suspension(springs struts lower ball joint) also a complete new ac system(condesor, compressor, control panel). The turbo timing valve had been replaced and the engine had been compression tested. The interior carpet was new and all power options work, leather is pretty good but the dash has about 4 cracks. Well here is where the story starts to worry me. I have these records for the clutch replacement but about two weeks after I get the car the clutch starts to make a humming sound whenever I depress it. I take it to the shop and they say the throw bearing had come loose when the fork broke. I say ok because I am prepared to pay about 1400 dollars If in fact the clutch needs to be replaced agian. But I am hoping it something that want require a complete clutch job. Come to find out that the previous shop that installed the new clutch left off parts (guide sleeve) bolts and bent the sensors a the flywheel. The grand total to fix this mess up came to $2600 because once they got everything apart they realized the shop had left bolts off of the car and put the wrong size bolts in other places. So now I am in at $6600 plus I still have my paint job to do at $600(Maaco). I have purchased my own parts for the rear rotors pads shocks and wear sensors for $330 and the labor is $150. Thats going to put in at around $7700 which I guess still is not all that bad considering the cars engine runs like a dream and a lot of these other trouble spots are now under control. I love the car but I do have some limits. More than one more repair over 1k this year will be just about all I am willing to handle. I am prepared for at least $1200 a year in maintenance but if it is going to be more than that then i guess I better settle for a Nissan 300zx. But for right now I have one the hottest looking cars in the triangle and no one can believe it did not cost me $12000. Wish me luck in the future. And if your looking for a Turbo model Porsche drive it as hard as the owner will let you for about 30 minutes to get a true Idea of what kind of shape the car is in. •Accelleration. It's throttle response sucks. 0-60 in 8+ sec. I picked up this 944 for just under $6k with 69k miles! I was origionally from Texas and had most maintenance records. The paint was good for being over 12 years old, although certain body parts had been repainted. No sign of previous accidents. Similar Products Used: None |

I love this car.
Weakness:
Pretty Expensive to keep up to perfection. I wanted one of these baby's ever since I was a kid. Found'87 951 with 98,000 on it and was bone stock except for the Authority Stage 3 Chips (a must for a 951 owner). It was a 2nd owner car, decent paint, excellent interior, and a few bolt on fixes (suspension was origional, AC had a bad hose, Steering Rack leaked, and the sunroof needed new gears.) I have put about $1300 into it, and many a weekend of work. Compounded the paint by hand, fixed some of the cracks in the dash, and detailed the entire car. It is now one of the nicest I've seen. A clutch is in the near future at the tune of 20 hours under the car and about $600. Similar Products Used: '83 911 SC Turbo Look Cabriolet (Supercharged 3.8 at 610hp) |
