Strength:

Reliabity. Availibity of parts due to minimal changes in an almost perfect car.

Weakness:

If you are not a mechanical person like myself, it might be difficult to find someone who knows Porsche systems.

This car has been a dream of mine since I was a kid. I came across this car that needed some TLC. I bought the car sight unseen, but took my chances because it was a Porsche. As it turned out the car was in better than expected shape with 85k miles. Car handles better than any sports car that I have driven. Despite the age the car draws looks from everyone even new 911 owners. Car does not smoke and all guages and dials work. Excellent German Engineering. No other sports car has the authority or reliability of a Porsche. Parts for the car are cheaper than ones for my Jeep CJ7 or Land Rover Disovery. The older 911's are very simple to work on. If you have the balls to take a corner with some heat, the 911 will put you through no matter what year model.

Strength:

Power, precision handling, flat cornering, solid construction, and (of course) looks

Weakness:

Maintenance costs and replacement parts can get a tad costly. Even though it's a four seater, not recommended for more than two people.

24 yr. old vehicle that outperforms (acceleration and handling) most new sports cars today but rear engine does take a little getting used to (especially on a road course). Mine has 114k miles and is still extremely solid - Porsche knows how to build a vehicle to last. Classic Porsche 911 looks and very few electronics gizmos to go wrong. The 3.0 SC engine is a terrific balance of performance vs. durability. Truly a fun vehicle to drive.

Strength:

Loves to go on the tight and twisty at high speeds.

Weakness:

Do your research when buying a used Porsche.

Classic Porsche, if you haven''t driven one, you haven''t driven what a sports car should be. Has the steering wheel feel of a race car and fuel economy of a gas getter. Great car to take on trips.

Strength:

Rock solid- car is 14 years old and has no squeeks or rattles. Cost of ownership... really? You bet. The TOTAL cost of ownership is very low when you consider that the car holds its value so well. It is nowhere near as expensive to maintain as people think- just spend your money on buying a good one to start, change the oil, drive it.

Weakness:

Fear of parking lot dings, vandalism, etc. Takes a bit longer to put the top up or down than I would like.

This is my second Porsche 911. After I sold my first, I realized that nothing even comes close. It is the best all around car I have ever owned or driven. It looks like a million $$, it handles like it is on rails, it is fast and fun. I will keep this car forever....

I work for a car auction and have driven almost every car made. The NSX is very sweet, M3 is fun, Viper fun, but again- overall the 911 rules.

Strength:

Great styling and good comfort,if you appreciate the simplicity. The engine is strong and the handling is alot of fun with a little practice. Definately a unique and specific to porsche driving experience.

Weakness:

As many porsches all the bugs have to be worked out before really being able to enjoy the experience. A bit overrated, dont get me wrong I am a porsche nut, but parts could be a little cheaper and overall easier to repair myself. Unfortunately I had to rebuild the engine due to oil leaks 2 months after purchasing it.

I have always admired porsches for their styling and driveability. I bought this porsche 1 year ago and have had my share up ups and downs. I grew up with my fathers restoration projects so I understand the trials of owning an auto like this. The car is all I expect it would be, and being a daily driver it treats me pretty well.

This car is a better example than the '85 model, the Jag cant match up in speed and handling, The Dino handles well but deosnt have the strong feel of the 3.6 C2 engine.

NONE, UNLESS ONE WANTS TO NIT-PICK AN ALSMOST 20 YEAR OLD CAR

tHIS IS THE FIRST PORSCHE THAT I HAVE PERSONALY OWNED. I WAS AN AUTO DETAILER FOR 4 YEARS, BACK IN THE MID 80'S. I WAS LOOKING FOR A CAR THAT I COULD PURCHASE AND THEN RE-SELL WITH OUT LOSEING MY SHIRT. AN OLDER PORSHE WAS THE ANSWER. THE CAR IS INCREDIBLE FUN TO DRIVE. IT IS SOLID, TIGHT AND PLENTY OF PUNCH. NOT THE KIND OF PUNCH THAT A V8 DELIVERS, BUT THIS CAR WOULD EAT ANY PERIOD AMERICAN CAR FOR LUNCH ON A LONG WINDING ROAD. NOT TO MENTION THE QUALITY OF THE GERMAN WORKMANSHIP. 18 YEARS OLD, AND EVERYTHING WORKS. A NEW EXPIERIANCE FOR ME. I'M SO USED TO THE FIX OR REPAIR DAILY CARS THAT FALL APART AFTER 50,000 MILES. I WOULD RECOMMEND A SIMULAR CAR TO ANYONE LOOKING FOR A FUN, RELIABLE, WELL BUILT SPORTS CAR.

Model Reviewed: 911 Speedster

Strength:

Very unique and distinctive (factory) styling. Much lighter than standard 911. Best quality? It's a porsche! :)

Weakness:

Several amenities (cruise control, etc) factory removed to make the car faster (both a strength and weakness). Styling starting to look slightly dated compared to 996. Electrical problem that no one can fix. Manual top takes some manual dexterity to put up/down. No rear seats (covered by humps).

Undeniably my dream car from the first time I saw one. Check out the Porsche in "Wayne's World II" (no, not the mirthmobile ;) ) -- That's a '94 speedster (triple black, like mine). There's definitely a very cool factor to being in an area with a large number of Porsches, yet having one that no else has. Quite the conversation starter!

The windshield is about half the height of a regular 911 and at at much lower angle; normal 911s look boxy next to it!

Treated myself back in '96 by picking it up; haven't regretted one day of it since, even with the annoying electrical problems that 3 mechanics have failed to fix (excessive battery drain - dies in about 45 days if not driven regularly, or 6 months *if* driven regularly; not cool :( ). Nonetheless, still a striking, fun, unique car, and I'm sure the problem is unique to my car rather than across the line.

Dropped a $9000 stereo/security system into it (two 15" subs behind the passenger seats effectively cancelled out the ~300 lbs of weight savings the car came with ;) ). Very nice for sunny days with the top down!

All that being said, the styling is starting to look a little bit dated, especially compared to the 996's wonderful lines. Will probably upgrade in the next year or two, but I'll always be struck by the Speedster's awesome lines.

Strength:

Engine, breaks and trans. Handles like a dream and plenty of stopping power. Fast and a pleasure to drive.

Weakness:

Plastic rear window on cab will fog up. Looks awful.

Big bucks but worth it. Highly recommend. The fit and finish are first rate. A classic that should depreciate slowly.

Strength:

This car has a fair deal of point and squirt above 3500 rpm with potential power oversteering in dry conditions and not so predictable oversteer on typically twisting european networks. The SC is simple in the cabin space, rapid when required, and has (or can have) fantastic braking. The design of this machine is so pleasing to the eye that both old and young alike can identify with its power simply by looking at it. This does not necessarily apply to later 911's.

Weakness:

The 3.0 litre engine 204 bhp(European) is certainly a sewing machine , but with superb valve engineering, the remainder of the design (dry sump etc., perfectly capable to this day ) but the gear change (shift) is and always was, dreadfully long in travel: And any possible heel and toe not possible in standarn configuration (rectified in my case).

I paid roughly twelve thousand dollars for this car (all cars more expensive in Europe). It had undergone a very expensive restoration (not mine), so expensive that with stainless steel heat exchangers and exhaust system, top end rebuild, complete engine sealing and new brakes (+) all around the car is absolutely as clean and powerful as when leaving the factory. I now have the car that I intended to have when dreaming of one as a child. ( When James Hunt was World champion (1996)and had an RS)
I also have five children. So a Landrover Discovery with seven seats is my other choice. I did have one moment in Italy while being truly excessive.. when trying to scrub off too much speed on braking with the skittish front,I became indicisive and finished with a massive tail hangout on a very bad cliff-sided road. Taught me a lesson. I would have preferred to be in the Morgan at that moment. Do not trust the convential Porsche 911 handling when things get tight or wet. Always buy the best tyres (tires) to suit your conditions and temperature. Try to stay within the band on ordinary machines. This is very good valve gear, don't mess it up.

Similar Products Used:

I have covered more ground in shorter time driving a Morgan +8 over the Mendip Hills, here in Somerset. The Porsche is within a minute or so of a Kawasaki 1000 which I used to own. But the Morgan would not have been as relentless as this, albeit aged Porsche, when for example it covered 500 miles in six and a quarter hours through France on Autoroutes to the south of France (no fines). The Porsche being an infinitely more competent machine.
